Prof's Lab: Diary Of A Bedroom Farmer

Count me in flora. Teach me everything you know o_O :yummy:

You got any advice for me, I'm in a pickle. I just ran out of ph down and my DWC plants are slowly rising in alkalinity. I'm getting them pool ph down, its the only thing I can find in this small town. I have two different shipments of ph down coming but they won't be here in time. Any ideas or advice?

You have rez's right @Preston9mm ? what would you do if you were me?

No DWC here, but I'm pretty certain you can use lemon juice or vinegar for PH down....

Not 100% sure though, I'd wait for the Prof to chime in...

Little late but I'm here. You can indeed use lemon juice and vinegar however you will only be able to use it for a short period as it will begin to grow mould. It is fine in soil but with hydro the water will go bad. I have experienced it with lemon juice but haven't tried vinegar yet. If you dont have long to wait then you'll be fine but I'd clean the res weekly if it takes any longer.

For pH down I like to use sulfuric acid because it works very well and is very cheap and easy to work with. Simply buy a small container (less than $10) of battery acid from your local car parts store and use it diluted in DISTILLED water by buying a gallon of distilled water, taking out one cup and carefully pouring back 1 cup of the battery acid. This 15:1 dilution is safe to use (wont burn you) and it works at just about the same rate as the commercial pH down product made from phosphoric acid. The $10 purchase will make many gallons of pH down, enough for several years of steady use.
*****************************
I will add that you need to follow her instructions carefully about mixing it. You could be injured if you aren't careful.

Certainly ask Emilya for the finer points before proceeding.

Thanks for the tips VG. That is a good idea and I might try that when my bottle runs out. In the 7 or so years that I've been growing I'm still only on my second bottle though. I find that I only need to use between 4-6 drops from a pipette to get to where I need in hydro and with soil I rarely ever use ph down. My bottle might run out faster now that I've gone coco though

I got sidetracked. Not surprising these days.

Wish I could give you a real one. :hugs:
Very sorry to hear about your friend.
Funerals help us process our grief so this is unfortunate for all of his loved ones. There are other ways to honor him though and doing that may help you.

I missed my grandmothers funeral and felt horrible. I was down with a virus and just couldn't make it.
I planted a rose bush in her honor. Everytime that I looked at it I was reminded of her.
It may sound a bit silly but it helped quite a bit actually. It was something tangible that I could focus on instead of the feelings of guilt and lack of closure that I was experiencing.

The rose was just an idea that worked for me. You'll find something personal that will work for you.
Much love:love:

Thanks VG. I've smoked a couple J's for him but as he wasn't a smoker it doesnt seem overly fitting. He liked mountaineering lol. Not sure I will be going up a mountain anytime soon. I'll think of something. Cheers VG

Sorry about your friend Prof never easy dealing with a loss like that. Keep your chin up buddy.

The OGKZ has completely melted and didn't even get to fully stand upright.
Noooo!
It's N I feel sorry for. You guys must be used to this by now
It's all good Prof only the coolest members on 420 have lost a plant named after them in Prof's garden.

Nice looking harvest of the Barney's plants! Happy to see the Gz did well, I really like the buds I got off mine one of my favorite smokes I've grown the bud density doesn't disappoint that's for sure!

Sorry for killing your OGKZ. That does mean we'll get to see a better Fat Purple and some more HPD. The autos will be run in the 2x4 after these have been finished up. I thought about running them in the smaller tent but have since decided against it.

I have the Barney's final weights to put up later over on that thread.

Cheers N

Hey 420. It has been a little while since the damping off claimed all of my seeedlings, and it did claim them all. Not one survived lol. Oh well. That was then and this is now. The veg tent has been temporarily upgraded and currently contains everything which isn't flowering except for the auto and some HPD cuttings in a glass on a shelf....

I will be putting these into flower tomorrow....

The White Widow and the Blueberry Cookies have yet to show any signs of recovery and actually look a little worse....
DSC01599.JPG

The Critical Jack and the Tropicanna Banana clones which survived. The damping off got to the clones as well. The Critical Jack survived and had roots but the rest had started to go mouldy....

The TB in the jar isn't dead but it isn't growing amazingly well either. That yoghurt pot contains some Fat Purple cuttings....

The Hashplant D cuttings in a jar. These and the Fat Purple cuttings have been in the jars since yesterday....

The coco grow is coming along nicely. The plants look to have a little while left before we even think about chopping....

How's the fam doing?? Littlest one getting into trouble yet??
Hey VG. Trouble is not the word. She is like a polar opposite to the first lol. She's one of those creepy babies which never smile
Hope you've been good m'dear?

Hey 420. After a disastrous attempt to get the next grow underway we find ourselves here....
DSC01606.JPG

Today was flowering day 1 for the old mother plants. I transplanted them into some 5lt plastic pots last night just in time to flip them for their first 12 hour dark period. The Fat Purple, Hashplant D, Critical Jack and Tropicananna Banana are officially flowering.
We are going with the 100w light which won the vote by 1 vote with 1 vote from Shed lol. This time we will do a better job of it I'm sure....

I allowed the pots to dry out almost fully before I attempeted to remove them from the fabric pots. The root balls were very compact and even with all the squeezing and pulling while trying to remove them from the pots, they didn't fall apart.
They have been flushed through with a low strength feed and from now on I will feed them from the tray. If the salt build up isn't a problem for fabric pots then I can't see there being any issues with doing it this way.
The plants look ok currently but they have been slightly neglected over the last week. They always look good once they get stuck into flower though.
Here we are on flowering day 1.

The 200w coco grow is on flowering day 61 today and feelings are a bit mixed. Some plants are doing great but some just feel a bit slow. The Phantom Cookies Domina looks like its still only just beginning but at the same time looks like the fade is beginning to set in. It is still firing out pistils and barely any are changing colour. The French Macaron has a similar feel but this one looks like it just needs to swell a little. It also looks like it will be the smallest plant except for the Double D's. DD's had the worst start though and I'm sure it will be a good plant if grown properly. The StarCake feels a little "meh" but the end result may change that. I shouldn't put her down quite yet. It is just a feeling.
The rest are all making me very happy lol. It is strange as there is this divide in the grow. I know that it is coincidental as there is no difference in the quality of regular and feminized seeds but the regs in this case are all considerably better than the fems. The smell of all of the regular strains which incudes the Hoe Down, Double D's and the 2 Crumbled Lime's is far superior. It is difficult to say which one I like most but all 4 are really good. The plants also seem a bit faster and look a week or so ahead of the fems. They have more frost on larger flowers though its not the end yet. finally they just look better in general. Like I said, all of this is coincidental but it was an observation I have made.
I'm struggling to make any harvest predictions with this one some of the plants look like they could finish up in a couple of weeks and some look like they might have as long as a month left. I'm not waiting a month. I have autos to run!....
