Papay/Jungle Wreck and "living dead"

Thank you Ms. Fox for the help, I failed to test my run-off because I was just checking my pH of water going in and then going by the Burpee. I bet the Burp is giving me false readings because it reads 7 or just a pube hair higher...but my Freshwater pH color card is giving me 7.6 going in and 6.0 coming out.

Well, I took a trip to Lowes and de pot and they had pH down for pond and fish but no up, so the only thing I can think of is using dolomit lime. Well here are update pics of the bunch.

Plants are looking very nice, Maybe you should order the PH up and down off the internet if you don't have a hydro store near you. I think its pretty important. Any way look like you are doing a great job without it.

Thanks for the nice comment Sonzor, but I feel like I am being rushed by the plants now.... I just purchased " General Hydroponics ph up and down 4oz. dry samples" Free shipping and they cost me 10 bucks! I know you grew in soil but did you ever have to check pH? If so, did you use a pH meter and what kind? I can't remember ever reading of it.... you must have on the hydro project. right?
I just feel that I have made it this far and it would suck to fail now.

damn looking good

Thank you SouthernOnt, I hope I get the pH up and down before its too late for my Jungle wreck and my Papaya Mother plant! I think I picked the right Papaya to clone off of because she is showing she is very strong and full of growth, just have some faint rust spots. Cross your fingers for them.

The Siamese twin is still very small, not even an inch tall :( so I made a hard decision to put her outside and just let her grow, I needed the light on the stronger girls. I hope you all understand there was nothing personal in this decision.:smokin:

Im sure you will be fine it will get there soon enough. When I fed my outdoor plants I always adjusted the PH of the nutes. Although when I just water with the drips it was just plain water. I am sure it probably stunted my plants a little but I am fine with what I have so far. With the Hydro I do adjust the PH also I am way more on top of it with the hydro. But not as anal as most. I use the ph test kit as well as the PH tester I bought from the store, it was around 15 or 20 dollars if I remember correctly. I know people spend hundreds of dollars on testers and meters. Since I grow for myself it just does not make sense for me to invest that kind of money. And what I have been doing to this point seems to be working fine for me. Good luck..

Thanks Sonzor for the moral boost, I'm all better now that I can smell those Papaya buds when I touch them. OOOOOOhhhh, you must have all sorts of Aroma therapy going on over there. I would love a scented candles like that!;):peace:

Yes the smell in my house in overwhelming. The biggest problem is my wife hates the smell with a passion. She thinks its going to give her a heart attack or something. So I try to control it as much as possible. As a matter of fact I just went out and bought some ONA (oder neutralizing agent) The oder is not close to as good as the smell of my buds but too my surprise this stuff works unbelievable. A tea spoon of this stuff does the trick. We will see how long it last but I am impressed so far. Any way greet job on your grow and am looking forward to the outcome.

p.s give 420fied your vote for member of the month he deserves it.

Yeah, I feel your pain man, my wife hates it too! I don't know why... to me its like a fresh breath of mountain air. I need to get some ONA. About giving my vote to 420fied, I think he has done a great job with his grow, but I also know that all he is doing is copying his friends system. I read most of his grow since way back when he started it and caught up to it last night. He is done a great job but still its not like some others that have their own original idea. Like for example you, I was thinking of you and Perico, both of you have done some quantam leaps for first timers and the final product of that originality is impresive, far more than a mirrored grow in my opinion. So I am gonna have to give it some more thought and place my vote to the person that stands out for their originality and persistance and the valuable help they give to others. Tunes is another good example of an original grower, I like his techniques with LST. So we'll see how I go with my vote. Take care my friend and peace out.

What kind of camera are you using? Got some nice close-ups yourself! Depending on the model and if it supports the following ability I have a tip for you and others who take yellow-tinted pics due to the flowering lights (yellow isn't my favorite color haha)...all mine are taken under 2700K CFL's with a Canon S3 IS Power Shot (it's about 3 years old) as well but you'd never know it from my pics ;)

A lot of people aren't too keen on taking pics on a mode other than "auto" but it's worth playing around, after all it's not like the old days when you had to pay to develop film if you didn't know someone with a dark room lol.

Here's how it works on my camera, yours may be similar:

I set my camera to "Program" mode (not sure why it's called that), it's basically "Auto" but allows me to use my macro and super macro settings as well as tweak white balance, exposure, flash delay, and a few other things. Basically gives me control over everything except the F-stop and the shutter speed. But I digress...

Find your "White Balance" settings option in your camera menu and set it to "Manual", don't use any of the presets especially if you are at home! The colors may look all funky through the viewfinder but that's because you need to calibrate it. It's really easy, all you need to do is find something white, point your camera at it so it fills most of the viewfinder, press the "Set" button, and PRESTO! Now your camera knows what white is supposed to look like and adjusts its internal settings to compensate. You may need to check your manual for specific instructions for your camera but that's it in a nutshell, hope it made sense.

Now next time you take pics under your flowering lights bring a white sheet of paper with you (or a T-shirt, I often wear a white t-shirt while hiking just for that purpose lol, or anything that is white) and set your white balance under the grow lights. When you take your pics they should show up without the yellow-tint and more true to what they would look like under "regular" lighting.

If that doesn't make sense let me know and I'll try to explain it better, kind of rushing as dinner is ready :p I think I'll post this in my journal as well and maybe in a new thread in another subforum later tonight when I get a minute.

Thanks LN, I think I got it. My camera is a Fuji FinePix S700 with 10x zoom and 7.1 mega pix. it has a manual setting that includes incadecent light and three settings for fluorescent light, I never knew it had that. I have to mess with it more to see what else it does, I don't know where that manual is anymore but I just may find it later. Thanks again for the tech support!

Hey all, I took a trip to town and picked up some Dist. water, 70% Isopropyl alcohol, Adirondack Seltzer, 12 jiffy pots made of Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss, Stainless steel 5" shears and a rapitest soil check. I am gonna sit on this stuff for a little while until my ph problem is working itself out.

I was wondering about how I was gonna go about fixing my ph problem since it had become a problem, and from all the web surfing I did, I came to the conclusion that I had no real option but to use the dolomite at 1 tsp. per gallon of soil. So I took 2 liters of Distilled water (pH of 6.0) and added 8 oz. of my soft tap water (pH of 7.6 or +) which made it to 7.0. After messing with the measurements I was thinking why did I pay to get the pH up and down if I could just adjust it like this.... but I guess I would have to drive downtown for distilled water and all that just seems like allot of work.

I did some slow watering with my newly adjusted water on all of the plants and caught the first drops of my run-off and checked the pH. I still have 6.0 or lower, so I kinda knew that already but I just had to check again, I added the dolomite (granular) at 2 tsp. per pot and will do another check next watering about 4 or 5 days from today.:peace:

FYI, distilled water should have a pH of 7 (either that or my brain hasn't fully awakened yet lol)...

I could be wrong but I think the dolomite lime is slower acting...hydrated lime is water-soluble (not sure on the dolomite, meant to buy that but mixed them up) and quick acting, oh and potent as hell lol. See what your pH looks like after your next watering just like you mentioned.

Hey LN, I just checked out Crystal Springs web site and it says that pH in Distilled Water is 5-7. I guess it varies from batch to batch. Maybe I am wrong or the pH color card kit that I have been using is a piece of shit like my Burpee, imagine that... two of my pH testers are in cahoots.
I need to check on that hydrated lyme tomorrow. I am going to a bigger town tomorrow so I'll hit a greenhouse or two on the way back. Thanks again for the info.:thanks:
