Outdoor Growing With BeezLuiz

you took it to Mother Nature and came out on the top. A lot learned here.
I definitely learn a lot each grow season, but Mother Nature is a formidable challenge.
Sorry that you "had" to, but glad you have 5 roast pans rounded over!
A few years ago, I would have been stressing out big time over this bud rot loss, but now I just look at it as part of the process. I still have more than I will ever need.
That must have been quite the trimming session. Did you bring the bowl with you?
Indeed I did. Actually, I would have started trimming my GDP a couple days sooner, but my son was still using the bowl trimmer.
I have two suggestions. The first is to downscale the resolution before you take the pics next time. Phones have a setting in their cameras that will change the res to something lower for pics you're going to post, and then you just change it back for regular shooting.
Thanks, I see that setting, but I know I'm going to forget to adjust that before taking pictures. I gotta train my brain.
Second is to get Faststone image viewer or Faststone image resizer. The resizer will batch convert and the viewer (which is my default viewer/editor) makes it easy to resize as you view them. Both are at faststone.org
:thanks: I will certainly check that out!
Hope all goes well for the PH, how much longer do you figure for her, or did you chop her too?
Purple Haze is getting really close too, but since there is no sign of bud rot yet I decided to let it ride for another week.
With the weather getting a little cooler and a little wetter every day, your timing is perfect!
My timing would have been perfect if I had harvested 3 or 4 days sooner. The bud rot really accelerated in those last few days.

Here's an update on GDP. After 3-5 days of drying, I pulled out a few buds to find that some of them were getting mold. :(

Even after a bath of both H2O2 and a bath of 1% citric acid/baking soda all of the bud rot was not quite killed off and mold continued during the drying. Sad thing too, is that it was only occurring on the larger buds - top colas. I should have known better than to leave them largely intact.

I examined every bud with my 50x loupe and tossed anything that was affected. I tossed about 2.8 oz yesterday, and still have a little bit more to examine today. Live and learn.

Hey Beez - I feel for ya!! - I'm starting to wonder if trying for those large dense buds is a good thing. If it works great but.....
Something new, for me, this year was having about 5 plants back on the beaver dam - 4 females. So just lately I've brought up some colas absolutely loaded with seeds. I hung them to dry a little more before harvesting seeds. Normally I would just chuck the chaff, but then I got to thinkin'!! So I saved the chaff and packed it in my vape - what a different buzz - more body, less dizzy - I'm going to experiment a little more with this.

PS - some people say that you can still use the bad stuff to make oil - maybe ask more experienced people.??

For me, it's always a good thing. :laughtwo: However, I usually deconstruct the large buds into smaller nugs before putting them into the drying basket, but I left them a bit too large this time. First time for me seeing mold during the drying process.

Another good thing to do with the chaff is to shake it with some dry ice through a filter bag or cheese cloth. You'll be surprised at how much kief you get from that.

I could have enough to supply the state and I’d still feel gut punched and saddened with the mold on those beautiful buds. :rip: I hate it but “Shit Happens”

Highya Beez,

I would guess your drying room doesn't have low enough humidity. I have a dehumidifier set on 60%, and haven't had any budrot or mold to appear. Sorry for your loss! Happy Smokin'

I can relate. I just hate wasting good buds.

Humidity here this time of year is usually 30 - 40%, but lately it's been 50 - 60%, so yes the humidity is a bit high for my liking. However, I think these buds already had a head start on the mold by the time I harvested. I dry my buds in a drying basket with a fan blowing on "low" beneath the basket. This is the first time I've had mold on buds during the dry process.

Oh, some good news: I forgot to mention this earlier, but my caterpillar cage did its job very well. I saw zero caterpillars or evidence of bugs of any kind on GDP. :yahoo: The cage has been carefully disassembled and stored until next year.

I don't think either of those touch botrytis, so it's not surprising that some showed up after the wash. That stuff is damn hard to kill.

:yahoo: and :welldone: on another great BL project!

Granddaddy Purple:
I've got Granddaddy Purple dried, turkey bagged to 62%, and now into cure jars. Even though I tossed about 4.5 oz due to bud rot and mold, I still ended up with 18.5 oz of buds and another 3.9 oz of trim. Certainly not bad for a plant that was only 3.5 ft tall. My only disappointment was the plant had zero purple.

Purple Haze:
I took some shots of Purple Haze a few days ago. The buds really have gone purple in a big way.

Since rain was in the forcast again, I moved Purple Haze into the garage to reduce the risk of bud rot. I think it's really pretty close to ready. Trichome close-ups still show some clear, but honestly, this late in the season I don't think it's going to get any riper. It's looked this way for a couple weeks now. The first picture was using my new phone camera's built in macro lens. The others were after I added my clip-on macro lens.

Yesterday I decided to start trimming the popcorn buds off the plant. I washed them, then threw them into the bowl trimmer. Most became trim bits, but I'll get some good kief out it eventually. Maybe today I will begin harvest in earnest... haven't decided yet.

Highya Beez,

Great job!! All those GDP jars of stash must bring a smile to you!! And the purple haze looks so nice! I'd help you trim if I lived out there!! Something about sativa trichomes and amber. I can't get many amber trichomes before I have to harvest! Happy Smokin'

18 plus ounces from the GDP is a splendid success. Congratulations on getting it all jarred up.

The Purple Haze is quite the monster. Looks like the head of Medusa. In that evil good way.

When my plants got to that stage I always started picking all the fan and larger leaves off in preparation to that harvest. For me it always made the trim job a bit easier.

Damn that's a lot of weed! (soon to be twice that much )
Excellent job on those girls, start to finish, Beez! :thumb:

that is a staggering amount of bud for a 3.5 ft tall plant....especially after loosing some to bud rot!
GDP had the fattest and densest buds of any outdoor plant I've grown so far.
I'd help you trim if I lived out there!!
I would have loved that! And I would have shared too! :ganjamon:

I don't know if the cooler weather and the longer nights are keeping this from fully rippening, or I'm just not patient enough. Purple Haze has been flowering now for over 15 weeks.

I see it too! :cheesygrinsmiley:

The past couple days I've been plucking the small stuff and still got a couple ounces drying now. The rest should be pretty smooth sailing now - just the larger buds.

Damn that's a lot of weed! (soon to be twice that much )
I'm glad I only had two big plants going this season - a lot less stressful. I can't believe I had 5 going my first year. I think I harvested about 7 lbs that year.

Highya Beez,

A nice problem to have is that many sticks to hold up those huge colas!! I used a lot of sticks but not that many. Gorgeously full colas!! And visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. Happy Smokin'

Outstanding, Luiz! Representing NorCal in a big way this year!
Thanks Felipe! Looking forward to your resumption of activities next season.
Seems like rot has been a problem for many this year.
It does. I'm not sure why, maybe I'm just more aware now that I've experienced it too.
A nice problem to have is that many sticks to hold up those huge colas!!
It was definitely necessary this year with the top-heavy colas. We get a lot of breezy evenings here during the summer.

Nice finish, compadre! Over & out...
