Interesting dialog. Your setup is surprisingly close to mine. You live in southern Cal and my setup is in northern Fla. I've been growing outdoor for 5 yrs and start my grow in mid April, same as you, just finished harvesting less than a month ago. My son grows indoor during the winter months.Hey there everyone! I've started my season of growing so it's time to start a new journal. I'm a bit late with the journal, but I'll try to catch everyone up pretty quickly. I'm contemplating making this a perpetual journal so I made the title a little bit generic, but this is my 4th outdoor grow.
A little background here for any new visitors: My son (@Liquidintel ) and I have been growing since 2018, here in San Jose, California (37.3°N). Up to this point, we've been strictly outdoor growers. We grow in large fiber pots (usually 10 and 20 gallon sizes) using soil. You can check out my past journals - links are in my signature.
Here's the original line-up for this year's grow - it's already been changed a couple times.
Liquidintel's plants: My son only wants to grow photoperiod plants after his experience last year with some autos. He doesn't feel autos are worth his time and effort. Now that he has his own home, he'll be growing these at his place and hopefully we'll get some picture updates from time to time.

OG Kush (fem / photo) from Dope Seeds
Red Dragon (fem / photo) from Barney's Farm
Phantom OG (fem / photo) from Barney's Farm
Dream Queen from my back yard.
Dresden Green Diamond (fem / photo) from Garden of Green
The Phantom OG didn't crack after 3 days of soaking so it got replaced with a Dream Queen seed that we found on our plant from the 2018 grow. That seed also didn't crack after 3 days of soaking, so it got replaced with Dresden Green Diamond.
BeezLuiz's plants: My planiswas to grow 3 photo plants and 3 auto plants and then 3 more auto plants later in the summer after the first 3 are harvested.

Gelat.OG (fem / photo) from a Spanish seed company
American Pie (fem / auto) from Pyramid Seeds
Zamaldelica (fem / auto) from Ace Seeds
Gorilla Cookies (fem / auto) from Fast Buds
Round 2 later this summer:
Glueberry O.G. (fem / auto) from Dutch Passion
Lemon (fem / auto) from a Spanish seed company
Northern Lights (fem / auto) from a Spanish seed company
These seeds were all started in early April and seedlings were above ground by 4/15 give or take a day. Since all seedlings look the same, I didn't really take any pictures of them that are worth sharing.
If by fun, you mean "trim jail" then yes! The first couple hours is fun, but then it becomes torture by the end.Now the fun starts!!!! Soon!!!
What Shed said next ↓↓↓Reading about your watering routine, it surprises me you haven’t made yourself a watering trolley yet! Maybe next year?
When my doctor asks me what I'm doing for exercise, I'm always tempted to tell him about this hobby.Probably something about getting his 10,000 steps in!
It is dry where I am. I don't think we've had any measurable rain here since April I think my bud rot might have been induced from spraying the buds with BT caterpillar juice about a week or two before the rot showed up.Glad for no budrot for you!! It's picking up over here. Oh, well. Must be dry where you are.
Thanks Carcass. The bar is kinda high for record breaking. My Sour Diesel from 2018 still holds the title at 31 oz, but these plants are gonna treat me well just the same.Damn, so many huge, frosty colas on that girl, she looks like a record breaker to me!
Glad you could stop by, Garybo. It's impressive that you can grow in that humidity! Fortunately for me, the humidity here during the summer is typically 40% - 50% and we don't get rain here during the summer.I managed to save 5 due to mold and partial of the others. Our humidity was in the mid 90's from mid August until September, as well as rain most every day, all of the ladies were in flower, the indica's were the first to show signs, the sativa's followed suit couple weeks later.
Thanks for your acknowledgement BeezLuiz, always nice chatting with you.Glad you could stop by, Garybo. It's impressive that you can grow in that humidity! Fortunately for me, the humidity here during the summer is typically 40% - 50% and we don't get rain here during the summer.
That's my experience this time Beez. Out of hundreds of rotten buds I found only 1 cat. It's been an incredibly busy couple weeks for me. My son and daughter-in-law had planned a large wedding for last October. Due to covid, they had to cancel it, and instead got married in a small redwood grove with only 9 guests - luckily my wife and I made the cut and were able to attend.
So this year, on their one year anniversary, they wanted to celebrate with their closest (vaccinated) friends that weren't able to attend the wedding. My yard was the chosen venue, so I relocated my plants to keep them out of harms way.
The yard was decorated with many of the wedding reception items they had already purchased but didn't get to use last year. The yard looked pretty good. Since this is a cannabis journal and not some other social media, I'll only share one photo - the area where my plants usually hang out.

On to Granddaddy Purple... after getting it back into its usual spot, I fed it and inspected it. To my surprise I saw this on one of the upper colas:
My first reaction was"Oh Shit!""Caterpillars!!" I ripped open the bud site to find the little bugger, but saw no evidence of caterpillars - no chewed stems nor poop.
I guess what I have is good old fashion "bud rot", which I've never really had before now. I removed the affected portion of the bud.
And a close-up of the botrytis.
Now instead of caterpillar watch, I'm closely inspecting for more signs of bud rot. These buds are super dense and pretty fat so it is probably no surprise that I'm getting some but rot here. I think I've got a couple more weeks until harvest. :fingerscrossed:
LQDintel's garden is to drool over!A few days ago I got some pics from my son's grow. They are all getting quite close to harvest - hopefully not all ready at the same time, but probably.
Zkittlez has the largest colas of the group.
OG Kush got hit pretty hard by the caterpillars, even though he has been spraying regularly.
Red Dragon has the prettiest buds, and will be the first to harvest - probably next weekend.
Maybe she helped keep them away from the others...took one for the team, so to speakOG Kush got hit pretty hard by the caterpillars,
Yeah, that Zkittlez surprised me as well. I wasn't expecting much when I popped that 3-year-old freebie seed. They all look fantastic, though that Zkittlez really catches my eye
That's my experience this time Beez. Out of hundreds of rotten buds I found only 1 cat.
He says, "Thank you!"LQDintel's garden is to drool over!
He stopped by yesterday to grab it. Hope he's finished by the time I need it.Looks like it's going to be a harvest for the bowl trimmer.
I'm kinda OCD about that sometimes.Oh, and it's nice to see yellowing leaves on a pic you post! Makes me feel better.
That's pretty much what I told him. Great minds think alike!Maybe she helped keep them away from the others...took one for the team, so to speak
Ah shucks. :blushes:You’re such a sweet guy, Luiz!
Indeed it is. The one I grew last year tested out at 10% cbd.Is that one of the 30:1's from the guy who sells seeds?
I'm afraid to add any more moisture to those thick, dense buds. If I do give it a try, what is the recipe you use again? (I forgot to bookmark that page and I'm too lazy to find it in your journal). On the bud rot front, wanna try soaking the plant first thing in the morning with 1% citric acid spray and see if it keeps any new rot from developing?
