Outdoor Growing With BeezLuiz

Yeah, I'm a little concerned about GDP because its bud structure is so dense. I'll certainly be watching closely.

It's been an incredibly busy couple weeks for me. My son and daughter-in-law had planned a large wedding for last October. Due to covid, they had to cancel it, and instead got married in a small redwood grove with only 9 guests - luckily my wife and I made the cut and were able to attend. :yahoo:
So this year, on their one year anniversary, they wanted to celebrate with their closest (vaccinated) friends that weren't able to attend the wedding. My yard was the chosen venue, so I relocated my plants to keep them out of harms way.
The yard was decorated with many of the wedding reception items they had already purchased but didn't get to use last year. The yard looked pretty good. Since this is a cannabis journal and not some other social media, I'll only share one photo - the area where my plants usually hang out.

On to Granddaddy Purple... after getting it back into its usual spot, I fed it and inspected it. To my surprise I saw this on one of the upper colas:
My first reaction was "Oh Shit!" "Caterpillars!!" I ripped open the bud site to find the little bugger, but saw no evidence of caterpillars - no chewed stems nor poop.
I guess what I have is good old fashion "bud rot", which I've never really had before now. I removed the affected portion of the bud.
And a close-up of the botrytis.

Now instead of caterpillar watch, I'm closely inspecting for more signs of bud rot. These buds are super dense and pretty fat so it is probably no surprise that I'm getting some but rot here. I think I've got a couple more weeks until harvest. :fingerscrossed:

It's great that you did that for your son- I know it's a lot more work than it looks-my son's wedding went the same way- 6 or 8 people at the wedding, then about 50 a year later at the reception in my backyard...
I gave away a lotta weed at that reception...

Sorry to hear about the rot- I've only had the caterpillar caused stuff- after removing it I'd blast that whole area on the plant with 3% hydrogen peroxide, and it seemed to keep it from happening again or spreading, at least in that spot.
Fingers crossed it's just a one-time thing on your plant!

so I relocated my plants
1st off congratulations on the anniversary garden party. What a grand time for the memories at your beautiful setting.
But where the heck do you relocate a jungle in your back yard? You must have a backlot like Disney Land!
I think I've got a couple more weeks until harvest.
They look so nice and I would be pretty positive about getting a couple more weeks of growth from them. That bud rot though it always hurts actually seems pretty minor for the stage their in comparatively. This should be a spectacular harvest coming up!

What I've found about budrot, and growing outdoors, it usually increases in instance toward harvest. That's why I check morning and night at this stage. Always a tossup whether to chop or add more bud! Happy Smokin'

So many mixed emotions I didn't know what to click!
I'm kinda bad about that. I always seem to have both good and bad stuff in the same post. I'll try to have only good news from here on. :)
I am happy for the kids, :yahoo:

but mold is always sad.
To be honest, I was kind of relieved it was bud rot and not caterpillar induced. At least for now...

I lucked out - there were only 25 here on Saturday... and I did give out some weed and gummies.

Same here - has always been caterpillars causing the mayhem. I contemplated spraying with H2O2 mixture, but I didn't want to introduce more moisture to the buds.

:laughtwo: I do have a pretty large backlot (small front yard). There was plenty of room behind my deck. I'm happy I didn't have to put them into my shed like I've done in the past. With this crowd, I wasn't trying to hide them, just move them out of the way.

Certainly a concern here, but so far I haven't found any more.
Yep - this is when the serious negotiations begin!!! :hmmmm:
Yes, indeed! I'm pretty close to the harvest window, so if I come across more bud rot, I may pull the trimming gear out of storage.

Granddaddy Purple update:
I'm doing daily bud inspections for bud rot and happily no more found at this point. As of today, the plant is 174 days from sprout and has been flowering for about 78 days (11 weeks). To combat the onset of leaf fade (mostly on Purple Haze), I've been feeding with increased nutrient levels. The fade has indeed slowed down, but on GDP I'm starting to see some leaf burn. I feed both plants on the same schedule and concentrations to keep things easy, but I'm thinking I should separate them now and back off the nutes for GDP.

The buds are bulking up really nice. Perhaps GDP is more dense than any of my previous plants. The down side of that is, of course, the bud rot risk, and all my branches are now very top-heavy. One branch actually snapped from the weight, but fortunately still had enough of it in tact for me to tape it up. I spent about 2 hours adding every stake I could find to support the branches best I could. I took a quick look at the trichomes with my 60x loupe. Lots of amber, but still mostly clear. I'm thinking one or two more weeks. Still some fresh pistil stigmas, and drinking every two days.

I'm really pleased with my moth/caterpillar prevention so far.

Seed making update:
You may recall this little Zamaldelica clone that I pollinated with my What Widow male.
About 7 weeks after pollination, yesterday, I decided to harvest the seeds. I was hoping for about a dozen seeds. Pleasantly surprised, I ended up with 30 seeds! :yahoo:
Some of them are pretty light and might not germinate, but many are dark and nicely patterned just like you would get from a seed bank. I'm pretty happy with them and looking forward to trying them out. Will they be male? female? photo period? auto?

Oh, a quick note about the What Widows I germinated for some friends and myself earlier this spring. I gave away 5 plants and kept 3 for myself. All 3 of mine were males. I just found out that 4 of the other 5 were also males! Really surprised that 7 of 8 plants turned out to be males.

I'll update Purple Haze next time. Have a great day everyone. :Namaste:

I've started harvesting today - but it is with misery - once I got those big beautiful colas down where I could see them - there is a lot of bud rot - some I just straight out tossed but I am salvaging about 75% and giving a good long bath in Peroxide mixture and lemon/baking soda and then may do a water cure on most of it. But what a shame because the weather report is still good for at least another week - DAMN!!!

GDP is one beautiful bush and those low hangers really show how much weight is on those branches! And that frost is out of sight.

I'm kinda bad about that. I always seem to have both good and bad stuff in the same post. I'll try to have only good news from here on.
I don't want to make my problem your problem! We like bad news too, in an informative way. ;)

Mix one batch, feed the Purple Haze, then put more water in the bucket to dilute for the GDP. You can even use math to calculate how much to add if you're so inclined!

Dang, that's is unfortunate news! I am happy to hear your plant made it this long since your northern location usually gets questionable weather by now. When did you start your plant(s)?

My feeding procedure is pretty pedestrian. I currently fill 2 one-gallon jugs with water, then take them to my work bench and add the appropriate nutes. Then I schlepp them across the yard to water each plant one gallon. Then back to the sink, and repeat two more times. Usually takes about 20 minutes for the entire process. My reasoning, is two fold: With my multiple hand surgeries, it's much easier for me carrying one gallon jugs in each hand for each trip. The other is that each plant gets a chance to have the nutes soak into the soil while I mix the next batch. I feel it makes for better distribution of the feed within the pot. Now I'll just have to keep the jugs labelled and dedicated to each plant.

I'm pretty sure these gals sprouted May 6th. And the weather here, temperature wise, has been OK and actually getting better for the next week. That is what makes it so maddening!!! I was going to have them done by Sunday and I think I will leave the rest of this gal and the other one until then. I have given them a good look over. Now, this plant may have had a bit of a reveg early on and I'm wondering if that had an affect.

Purple Haze update:
As of today, Purple Haze is 175 days old and has been flowering for about 79 days. It stopped its stretch at 61 inches tall. This plant is a relatively heavy feeder and has been doing well with the extra nutrients I've been giving it lately. I've been spraying this plant weekly with BT to control the caterpillar damage. Actually, I haven't seen any evidence of caterpillars yet. I know I shouldn't have said that out loud.

The buds are bulking up nicely - especially for a sativa-dominant variety. They are not quite as heavy as GDP, but still requiring lots of support. So far no broken branches, even though last night was a bit breezy.

The last couple nights have cooled down considerably and it's finally starting to feel like autumn. The buds are showing their purple color much nicer now. :)

I'll leave you with a Mutt & Jeff shot of the two outdoor plants.

Hi Beez! I’m all caught up and I stick to my original sentiment- wow!! Some absolutely stunning, mind-blowing, buds. I love that nighttime gazebo pic, totally a photm entry. Reading about your watering routine, it surprises me you haven’t made yourself a watering trolley yet! Maybe next year? ;) Hopefully that bud rot stays at bay for you, such gorgeous plants you’ve got. Oh, and congrats on the seeds! Looks like some winners in there for sure. :bravo:
