Our Veggie Gardens!

My son tried Ranger School a few years back. Poor kid - Georgia in the peak of summer and his body wouldn't stop sweating. He lasted three days before he ended up in the ER. Such a disappointment for him. The boy's used to achieving his goals. As consolation he stuck around and earned his jumping wings. Had to make the trip matter.

I don't want to mess up this thread but those who earn that tab are among the best we have. As much skill and talent is involved,, luck also plays a part. I had a chance to go, as a bennie, more of an atta boy but, I was older at the time and had a few bumps. But, , looking back I wish I would have taken the shot...

Hey Folks,
Re Post53: I wear the scroll, not the tab. Took me 2y of Ft Riley, KS, to get to 2ndBatt. Never got a slot for School so got out in 98. I have a great respect for those who have/strive for the tab. Sue, you and your boy should be proud.

RePost54: Wow! I'm seeing a strong maternal wisdom. First, agreeing w/Grandma's advice and now w/Mom's. That mix, spread 6" out to 20-24" depending on how well the soil is now, will be aces. Work it in w/a spading fork gently. Let the rain do rest. Underplant w/locals but not closely.

Believe me Ranger, I am proud. His inability to find a way to give me access to his children does not diminish that pride one iota.

Rad, are you thawing out? You should be starting your own adventure soon, eh?

It depends on where you look. Next to the basement garden room beside the laundry exhaust there is bare ground. it's frost heaved and crunchy ground that I hate to walk on, but it's thawing. Snow cover is down about 15" in the last week. 6-8" left on the ground.
The garden club had their annual indoor seed starting gathering last week. Outdoor gardening officially starts in May.
I have a few hardy seeds to plant as soon as the ground thaws.

Bare ground next to a warm basement. Note the black ice on steps that formed over night.

Looking across the back yard towards the brook. Note that light stripe with less tree branches, that's a 25mph wind gust parting the trees.

Very peaceful looking back where that stream is. Oh, the snow,,, big ole sun please melt my snow soon....

So sorry to hear that Ranger. Families should be more tolerant. Life is too short. I have a daughter in law who thinks I'm the antichrist. Nothing has been able to change that viewpoint. Sad, but nothing to be done but wait it out.

My hope is that you and your father someday reconcile. One of our family mantras was that you can live without anything but water and the love and support of your family. Hot, running water is preferable. In our society they make you move when the water gets shut off. Love doesn't have an off switch. It's always on. During this time of crisis I can't believe sometimes how much I need my son. Not to have him with me emotionally, despite the distance, is terrifying.

Thx Sweetsue, Kind of a bummer. I just try to put it out of my mind.

Re Post#68: Traditional way of doing snow/ice melt is to sprinkle the field/bed/whatever w/wood ashes. It's just enough to break up the sheen, so you get insolation instead of reflection. Free, works fast and the soil needs it anyway. Thaw works it in by itself. Right action at the right time.

To have that barn... man the possibilities. That's my dream spot, land, water, and clean air... shit. I need a farm ;)

I can smell spring in the air Dutty.

Great share on the ashes Ranger. A double whammy - faster thaw and good for the soil. I know Rad has lots of wood ashes.

that's not what i think of when i think 'barn'

that is what i think of when i think "warehouse'

that would be one heck of an undertaking dutty,, very impressive,, cheers

The Dill's Atlantic pumpkin strain has my thousand pounder in it.

I like that bravado petergreen.
