My First Time Growing

I agree with you on the clone being in a closed bag. Too much moisture, Not enough air movement or light and this one hasn't done it yet, but the first clone smelled as well. I decided to try a test. I took the clone out of the bag, put it in a small pot bottom that is about 7" across and probably 4-5" deep, then I took and put some rods across the top and placed another larger pot bottom (both very clear) over the top of the smaller pot bottom (see pic attached). This leaves a small amount of air to circulate in the "container" (which I can add clone water to each day if needed or as often as it requires it) as well as allowing A LOT more light to get in. This is just a test I thought of after reading your post and figured it can't hurt to try. Take a look at the pic and let me know what you think. Mine was/is very limp and looks to be dying and I'm hoping this will help it grow roots better. I just have to remember to check it daily to make sure the cube remains soaked. Here is the pic I took of the experiment:

Clone_test.jpg
I had enough water in the bag afterwards to pour it out as well. I just figured it couldn't hurt to try. If I had the money I would have bought the stuff to make Canna's clone bubbler, but it's a little out of my price range right now. If this fails, I will just save to get all the stuff to make the bubbler, but like I said, since this is just something I would have just gotten rid of after topping the amnesia, what's it gonna hurt to try?

nice grow you have going here smoke . wanted to ask about the clone in the air bag deal how is that going and what type bag is it ? thanks

No, The Truthband (Groot) is now in the bottom (new) section of the bookcase which is on the same lighting cycle as the top of the bookcase (18/6). I just transplanted the Truthband yesterday from a 1 gallon pot into the bigger pot as it was getting real tight in the 1 gallon pot and seemed to have stopped growing much. Still way to small to go into flower mode. I just wanted it to have a chance to start getting bigger in veg mode. If you look at the pictures again, it's the one with the white all around it and the 2 big CFL lights above it and the shelf below it. In fact I just went back and looked at Message #1770 where I posted the pics, It's the first pic in the message.

Thanks!
Smokey

Thanks for straightening me out :) Your decision makes total sense to me.

In SweetSue's first journal, a massive few hundred pages (like your's will be ), she went all the way through harvest with those bulb shaped CFLs. CFLs are never too close, until the leaves touch the lights. Even then it's just part of a leaf turned brown. How close to get CFLs is a tradeoff between maximum light and how often you want to be moving plants and lights.

Truthband1.jpg

If this were my plant. I would raise the plant until the highest point is just about even with the light bulbs, and the light bulbs plugged into the socket that almost touches the plant. As Truthband (Groot) gets taller, you lower the plant. As she gets wider, you move the light bulbs to sockets further apart. Be aware that most of the light radiates off the sides of the light bulb, not the end.

Keep up the good job growing !

Welcome Sweethook! The experiment I just tried is from the one I had in the bag, It was dying (or appeared to me to be) and was just limp and their was so much condensation built up inside the bag, I don't think it was letting enough light thru. The whole clone looked like it was dying and that's why I switched it to try this system. The whole clone thing was just an experiment to see if I could clone and had one dye already in it's baggie and figured this might work. It will probably be more work (adding new clone water to the cube whenever it needs it) but I'm hoping that with some air circulation and no condensation in a very clear container, this will hopefully work. Cannafan has a great system that involves a bucket with a screw down lid with holes in it, an aquarium pump plus a few more things that I'm going to try when I can afford to get all the stuff needed. This was an attempt to do it with stuff I had around the house already. We'll see how it works. BTW, it was a zip lock baggie, I didn't have anything else clear around.

Thanks Radogast, I did move the plant up to almost touching the light a little while after I made that post. PJ explained to me about the light being mostly horizontal when we talked about the CFL's, so that is how I had the bottom bookcase built was to exploit the horizontal light coming off the lights. I hope you approve of my experiment with the clone, but it was looking like it was about to die again as I explained in my post about what I did.

Welcometo :420: Sweethook

One of the themes of this grow journal is to try to do things as inexpensively as possible. Another member, LembaToast, grows a massive amount of outdoor plants. Over the years he has refined methods to clone and veg his plants in plastic bags. He gave a detailed tutorial on his cloning process here My First Time Growing

I invited Smokeater to try a similar process side by side with me. I documented my attempt on page 101 My First Time Growing

Smokeater is now innovating with clear Devo hats instead of plastic bags. :)

Smokeater - A tip I was given was to never let the rockwoll cubes stand in water, and not to top water the cubes. Place your bottom tray at an angle so the water runs away from the cubes and then arrange to briefly soak the bottom of the cubes once a day. - I don't know how well the tip works because I abandoned rockwool cubes for a splashing cloner bucket right afterwards. I love my splashing cloner bucket :)

Smoke I really don't like CFL growing... I find they make my girls stretch way more than necessary... I start them out under cfl's and leave them for about 2 or 3 days after they pop soil but then I put them in the tent under my leds... I put them as far away at first as possible but I have found my nodes are much tighter and they don't do the stretch thing near as much... If all you had were cfl's I could understand using them like that but with the light you have... there is simply no need IMO.. Everyone grows differently and I'm not saying one way is wrong and the other is right but you will find your groove and what works best for you....:circle-of-love:

Thanks for the tip Radogast, I will tip the container right away and get rid of any standing water and I'm glad you mentioned how to water the cube, I was planning on using a syringe to inject the clone water right into the cube, but won't now. Hopefully, soon in the future, I will be able to change methods, but right now I have to wait due to wife anxiety about my info. But I will keep you guys updated as to how this method is working for me. BTW, Here is a pic of the bottom of the bookcase with the Truthband and the new cloning method side by side (I still have to tip the clone):

I don't know why the bookcase doesn't look as bright in the pic as it actually is, The cam must be filtering out some of the light is all I can think of because it is hard to look straight at in person. The bulbs are 8" long and extremely bright. BTW, the whole front closes with a wooden door that is also painted white on the inside.

The problem with doing that Dennise is the tent is in flower mode only now (12/12 lights). I will have to experiment with the CFL's and see what happens. I may have to add more lights if I run into a problem. PJ looked the lights up for me when I explained to him that I had them (they are made specifically for growing), In fact you can you can see them at Amazon by going to:

CFL Lights

Had to start a new post as everything afterwards was link, But PJ was surprised when he saw them and felt they would do good for vegging my plants as the top of the bookcase is definitely under lighted and smaller and I needed a place for vegging a couple plants before I put them in flower mode to get them bigger. But thanks for the info Dennise!

Still doin a fine job I see Smoke! Glad the new addition to the book case is working good for ya my friend. :high-five:

Thanks STIHL, Hopefully I don't run into problems with the CFL's, but am kind of limited as to what I have to work with right now light wise financially (as usual), But I'll figure out a way to make it work somehow or another. I grew Jordan and Minnie in the bottom of the bookcase with these lights and they worked, so hopefully......

Morning Smoke!

Your using the LED for the flower tent and the bulbs for just the veg area in the bookcase right? This journal moves so fast it is hard to keep up! I used something very similar looking for a couple years. Looks very clean for sure with how you set it up.

:high-five:
Bob ;)

You have it exactly correct Doc! I am also saving for another smaller MARS light for the bottom of the bookcase, but that is going to take about a year before I have enough to get it right now. (Sorry about the speed of the journal, I just have so many great people helping, it fills up fast and I'm NOT gonna complain about something good like that!) But I'll get by with what I have or make small adjustments as I go to make it work. The top of the bookcase has 2 LED panels that aren't as good as the MARS in the tent, but they let me get by with starting all my plants and growing them up to a 1 gallon pot.

Thanks!

thank you smoke and radogast , i can understand trying to do it -clones - with what we already have , i have 4 little green crack plants a week old and looking for a way to clone when the time comes . again thanks

Got it! And no need to be sorry for having a great journal, just trying not to get in the way. It is amazing how fast your grow has progressed in a short time though.

I agree with you Doc, This journal is fantastic for me, I have learned so much from ALL of you great and experienced growers along with people who just have moral support or questions. I love it. I look back and I believe without going back and looking, the journal began on 1/9/16 and I have been so blessed to have ALL of you guys helping me, I couldn't even dream of having better teachers. I won't even try to list all of you, because THAT would be a LONG post! But your right, It is a fast paced and has LOTS of knowledge being handed down to me by you guys. I am truly blessed and have no idea how I got so lucky as to have all of you helping me! I will say THANKS to everyone!
THANK YOU ALL!!!!

Guys I have a sour diesel / headband plant in my deep water culture system I recently just fed at a new new trend with floranova grow I think I put too much in and I burned the s*** out of my plants now I need help because I've trimmed all the leaves off and I don't know if she's going to come back or not

I too am a newish user, and the only suggestion I have is to read as much as you can (as well as starting a journal and doing exactly what your doing, asking places for help). Their is A LOT of knowledge at :420: and the people here are wonderful. The big thing to do though is start a journal to keep all your help in one place, although you are welcome here on my journal too. This journal has never used nutes though if I'm reading your post correctly, but you can find help at this website for sure.

As a subscriber of this journal, it's been awesome watching all the experienced growers pitching in to get Smokeater to where he is with such amazing results! If any of you guys have some spare time, I would love for you to visit my journal (link in my sig) and give your opinion.

I currently have 3 white widow fem plants in veg, but am looking to put together a soil for my plants as I prepare to put them in their final 3 gallon pots. One of the main ingredients that I have access to for building my soil is Coast of Maine Lobster compost.

I hope to see some of you around and Smoke you give me inspiration!

Yankee, I wish you the best of luck! Hopefully you will be seeing some help soon. As far as soil goes, I can give you the recipe that was given to me if your interested. Pardon the pun, but my plants grow like weeds in it! In fact I'll send a copy of the recipe to you in a PM and you can choose if you like it or not. Thank you for the kind words and feel free to stop by my journal as often or as little as you want!

Smokey
