My First Time Growing

Good morning! Nothing is new here, except the clone lives on, She is a little stressed out still, But I'm pretty sure she will perk up and live. (Thanks to everyone that's helped me with clone!). Here is a photo of her that I just took:

IMG_20160404_120025.jpg
Also, I'm keeping the soil saturated to be sure she's getting enough to drink until she is all perked up

Oh yeah, she'll perk up. If you had seen me going back and forth with that dang dome, trying to get my clones to live without it, you'd be cracking up. Yours is doing fine without a dome, where mine wouldn't have made it. Your cloner is great! The roots that she got in such a short time are amazing to me.

SMOKEY! PeeJay checked in today!!!

He's doing good, his Mom has been ill, as we thought.

He says he'll pop around to visit people soon.

:circle-of-love:

I don't know how I missed this post before, But I am extremely happy to know he's OK!!! Welcome back PJ! when you read this post.

Welcome to :420: juststarting

I see you are planning to grow some autoflowers this month.

I strongly encourage you to start a grow journal now. Then you can share your soil, light, nutrients plans and very likely get help there in your journal :)

Click on the words Journals in Progress near the top of the page, read the "sticky", then make a new post at the bottom to start :)

I just transplanted the Amnesia into it's biggest pot, So now she's with the Truthband in the bottom of the bookcase and has time to grow before the first 2 girls in the tent are ready for harvest. I hope I got the timing right, But we'll see! Here is a picture of the 2 of them.

I'm still going to be limited for a while until I have enough saved up for lights for the new tent, I even asked my wife to start cutting back on stuff she buys me in snacks and stuff and start holding onto that money for when I go to buy the lights. I'm thing of using T5 fluorescent light fixtures that just plug in when I am able to buy them, or is the T8 brighter? I went back and looked at the posts about those lights, but couldn't tell from them which are the better lights? There's no hurry, like I said it will be a while before I have the $$$ for more lighting. And I still need to look into checking out the footprint my Mars 144 x 5w has.

Canna, Those links told me almost everything I need to know about T5 and T8's, Thank you very much! Now I just have to wait to afford some light fixtures (and bulbs) before I can set up the tent after it gets here. My wife is even on board helping to cut back as much as possible to save enough for some lights since she's found out I'll need more lights. I'm looking at getting 3 (depending on their footprints) 4 foot long 4 bulb fixtures for the new tent, I'm thinking T8 because of the price difference and because between T8 and T5 sound like there isn't much different in the light output (If I have that wrong, please let me know). I still have more shopping to do to compare prices between the T8 and T5 costs. But either way I'm sure I will come up with the money, just in my own time. So I won't be putting up the tent for a while after I get it but have no trouble waiting until we have the money for lights (I would have preferred a smaller tent but since this one just plopped in my lap, I'll take it). But once again, Thank you again for all the help!

Hey Smoke!

Love the avatar. Been away for a bit so I have a bunch to catch up on. You smoking this stuff yet? :blalol:

Bob ;)

Welcome back Doc! Glad your back! No I am still waiting for the girls to be ready to harvest (I believe it was Radogast that gave me a tentative date of the beginning of May), They are around 7 weeks in flower but I still can't see any sugar without using a loupe to magnify it, Hopefully I'll just suddenly see it all over my girls one morning since everyone says it can happen really quickly. Again, It's good to see that your back.

Having time to shop around is great, you can wait for the really good deals!

I think you are going to be glad you got the bigger tent later on, as your growing gets in to a rhythm.

Great job potting that amnesia up too!

T5 and T8 are about the same light (lumens) for the same power. T5 HO is about 1.5 X the light for 2X the electricity. A more concentrated light per square inch.

As well as choosing a bulb size, when growing plants there is the bulb color 'Cool White' (5000-6500K) for veg (to avoid stretch) or 'Soft White' (2700-3000K) for flowering. You have an LED for flower, so you would probably choose veg spectrum flourecents,

Historically, when talking about flourescent light, the discussion stops here.

When talking about LEDs the discussion continues into discussing PAR (Photosynthetically Available Radiation) and light distribution curves within the 400-700nm range that plants love. Quality LED manufacturers love to show their spectral curves.

Flourescents have now joined the ranks of advertising PAR spectral curves. This year I purchased a flourescent light with the 'burple' look of LEDs and the same theoretical advantages. My Late Veg plants seemed to grow faster under it compared to veg T5 HO lamps. :)

Thanks Canna, Your certainly right about having time to shop for the things I'll need to be on sale. I can't wait until I have the tent and can afford the lights (even my wife is trying to save money for the lights, she is truly wonderful to me!) and can switch over to it (I even contacted Mars lights to see if they have any old or used lights they can't sell, to sell me at a lower price as soon as I have the money but haven't heard back from them yet, Not getting my hopes up about that and still pricing out the florescent fixtures.

I think I'm going to use the tent I have now inside the new tent to partition off the flower side from the veg side because of the light cycle difference, I'll still leave the doors open on the old tent to veg in there too), I just have to figure out how I can cover the top between sides as the new tent is 78" tall and my tent now is only 60" tall. Maybe I'll use some sort of really heavy black plastic sheeting to cover the top section to avoid light getting into the flower part of the tent. But I agree, the new tent will really make it easier for me to grow in and not have to worry if I'll have enough room to keep up enough plants vegging so I can always put another one in when I take one out of the flower side for harvesting. I don't want loads of weed, but enough to keep us here happy with enough to make CCO, my meds, etc. This will even allow me to put a chair in it to sit while I defoliate or water or anything else that takes a little time on each plant. Thanks for the comment on the Amnesia transplant, I think I'm starting to get the hang of doing transplants better.:woohoo:
Thanks Canna!

BTW, I quit smoking in 2012 and switched to the e-cig so I could cut my nicotine level down slowly and quit. Well, I didn't do it as fast as I should have, But have quit vaping now also and that will help save money too even after I find the lights I'll need.

Thanks Radogast, I appreciate all the info on the differences. I will be blogging your post and keep it in mind before I buy any lights for the new tent. I had no idea that they had the "burple" florescence bulbs now. I will have to figure that out too when I look into the lights more. Any chance you know what they are calling them so I can search for them better?
Thanks!

Smoke I have a few t8 fixtures and one t5 fixture now in my setup. And from my experience there isn't a huge difference in light output. The biggest differences between the 2 to me are: t5's are smaller (take up alot less room) and put out the same amount or a little more light than the t8 bulb to bulb. The t5's also cost a bit more for fixtures and bulbs.
T8's: for grows on a budget there fairly cheap, easy to construct from scratch too. They put out good light for vegging plants, they take up a little more space than a t5 hince there bigger bulbs, slightly bigger fixtures too.
As far as electricity used to lumens produced between the 2 I've never really looked into it.
I went with t8's over t5's mostly for my grow because there cheaper, easier to find and get parts for in my area. And there plenty for my space, I wouldn even own the t5 if I hadn of ran up on it as cheap as I did. My t8's in my flower space put out little to no heat also, I've had plants set there leaves right on the bulbs for hours and not burn the tips @ all. Not running as hot helps out alot when it comes to venting the space. Alright im done rambling, I hope this helps. Looks like your girls are doin great, you have learned almost enough that either route you go with lights you should be fine. That clone is looking good, she will be back to growing like a weed before you know it smoke. Happy growing...:volcano-smiley:

This is fairly new stuff (I think)

I searched on " T5HO spectral curve " and got several hits on Econolux lights. No hits on the AgroMax Pure Par (which I use) and some older ehanced UVA and UVB Hortilux T5s (which I think have fallen out of favor.) Only dig into this if you want to get geeky about lights.

Now that you got me thinking, I'm going to take that Agromax spectral curve picture over to a lighting message board area and see what response I get :)

Thanks Jonwayne, That helps a lot, Budget is at the top of my list. so you told me what I need to know about which to choose! I really appreciate it!
Thanks

I appreciate it Radogast, I love the help & will think about trying it then if it's real technical.

Nothing technical about hanging a light - it's the choice which can be technical. :)

If you want to read a good survey of choices, try the first two posts by Hosebomber The Basics of Plant Lighting

I'll sleep while you read

Good Night !
