My First Time Growing

Thanks Shiggity, I kind of thought the leaves had something to do with the flowering cycle, (Hopefully they will start building up more trich's now,) But just wanted to be sure. And as far as my wife goes, You couldn't be more right, she is fantastic! She even told me today to start getting prices for a new light in the new tent. She said we could probably afford about $175.00 for a light (She must have been puttting money aside also!). Mars got back to me and originally they were very proactive about finding me a decent light cheap that had dings or scratches, etc. in it to get rid of, But today, they emailed me telling me that all their old lights had been shipped back to the factory and they quoted $310.00 on a light that goes for $326.00 on the auction site (Not sure if I can say their name, but can find it on the auction site by searching for) [h=1]Reflector 192 Led Grow Light Mars Hydro Indoor Hydroponic 405w±5% True Watt Lamp[/h] I've been looking at cheaper lights and found two on cramazon that are T5 8 tube 4' hanging light fixtures that comes with hangers and a plug. So that's probably one of the ones I'll end up with. You can see it by searching there website (cramazon) for
[h=1]iPower GLT5XX4X8 T5 Fluorescent 8-Tube Fixture Bloom Veg w/ Bulbs, 4-Feet, Powder Coated UL Listed Steel Housing, 10' Grounded Power Cord. Rated Wattage: 432W. Fluorescent 6400K 54W Tubes Included, Dual On/Off Switches
[/h]Or the other one I'm looking at is
[h=1]Hydrofarm FLP48 T5 Designer 4ft 8-Tube System w/Bulbs
[/h]They both look like the right light for me to light up the one side of the tent I'll be using for vegging. If someone that is knowledgeable about lights could look at them and let me know which is the best (they are very close in price) I would greatly appreciate it. BTW, The tent came today, I just haven't opened it yet.

I haven't checked the T5 units yet, but have you looked at the weight differences? That might be something to consider in your current situation.

:circle-of-love:

The Hydrofarm unit has a 5 year warranty on ballasts. (from the Hydrofarm Site)
The Other one has only a one year warranty.

Hydrofarm weighs about 3 pounds less than the other one. Personally I like the Hydrofarm unit the best, in looks..weight and warranty.

Then you would have to consider shipping prices of course. :) That might make a big difference.

Also, if you order the Hydrofarm unit from cramazon be sure you look into requesting the manufacturer warranty. There is an area on the listing that you have to click to request it. Make sure it doesn't cost extra for that.

I haven't looked at weight, I didn't even think of it, Your right that weight will make a difference because of me being in-valid :)
I will check the weights right away, Thanks Canna! your brilliant!

I like the Hydrofarm one too, but the wife doesn't like the shipping cost as the Ipower one is free shipping (That was our Christmas gift to each other last year, we paid to have Cramazon Prime due to the free shipping on stuff we had to order for the new house). I will have to go with the Ipower, I didn't even notice the shipping. Thanks for the input though!

What is the maximum weight that the tent frame will hold for hanging a light? Does it say on the manufacturer information?
I'm talking about the new one.

It just came today and I haven't opened it. But will let you know after I open it (dinner is ready now) and see if it says the weight it can support. The little tent has the heavy 144 x5w Mars light hanging with no problem, so hopefully, 20 some LB's won't be too much on the new tent. But I'll look in just a little bit. Another good thought Canna, Thank You!

Don't rush on that. Check tomorrow or when you get to it. I am heading offline for the night.
Enjoy your dinner!

Jimmie, Shhhhhhh...........:shhh:........Smokey hasn't figured out yet that he's got the green thumb and is a damn fine grower on his own merits.

When he figures that out..........LOOK OUT plants! There's a new sheriff in town!

He's going to be a teacher on this site. I have no doubt about that. He's great at what he's doing, not cocky about it, and loves to help people. Win/win/win. And everyone who learns from him wins too. I just can't wait to see the first harvest!

If we are talking about weight, should he be looking at the 8-bulb lights?

I veg a 4' x 2.5' area with a single 216W 4-bulb light - this is 15" wide (and 20-25 lb?)
A solid 432W 8-bulb light gets up over 30lb and is about 25" wide.

I know my plants would veg happier with a wider light, but are the exra lumens enough better to justify the bump in size, weight and electrical draw?

I asked my kid if he'll help me with the tent setup and light installation because I too was worried about the weight and size after Canna mentioned it, She is one smart cookie!, but my kid said it's not a problem for him to do it ( I opened the box to get a look at how strong the metal rods are and they look like they're heavy duty, I won't know anymore about the tent until we actually put it up because it's tough to tell with it all folded up, But from what I've seen of it, it looks like it's in good condition). Here is a link to the light I bought (My wife told me tonight to just buy it and quit hemming and hawwing about spending the money). I hope it will work and be a good light for vegging. The tent is 8' x 4' x 78" and will be partitioned off for flowering and vegging (I'm thinking 3' x 4' for the flowering area and that leaves the veg area with 5' x 4'). The questions answered on Caramazon about the light say that most people didn't see hardly any difference in their electric bills after running it 12/12 and I'll be on 18/6 but it shouldn't make that big of a difference I hope. Well anyways, here's the light I bought.

For a 5' x 4' veg area you will be happy with the extra width of this light. It is a monster fit to grow monster plants :)

Thanks Radogast, I was hoping to hear that from you! I want to veg my plants until thy're big to increase harvest for the CCO and my pain meds. I will never completely fit this tent with plants, but it will be nice to have everything so close together and even though it's partially painted, I can use the bookcase as a bookcase again! It's a big tent and still can't believe how I got it! But am very happy I did. Now I'll be able to grow more plants like you guys do and not have to be as perfect with the timing to keep the meds constantly coming since I'll always be vegging plants!

Thanks again Radogast!

The light you ordered is almost exactly what I have, Smokey. Mine is a different brand.
I am extremely happy with how the plants do in the veg stage. They get full and stay beautifully green. I have seedlings under it as well.

I am looking forward to seeing how this gets set up. That tent is huge! I hope you find a way to completely block light from veg and flower areas. If you have one that is 18/6 and the other half at 12/12, you are going to have to be sure of no light leaks from the 18/6 side.
I"m sure you will figure it out.

I'm glad it works so well then! Looks like I picked the right one. As far as blocking the 2 sides for the different light cycles, I am going to put my old tent (doors on old tent will be opened and facing the veg side). The only thing I have to do then is find some heavy blackout like plastic for the top since the new tent is 78" tall and the old one is 60". I've got a lot of rearranging to do in my room for it to be setup, Even after I get the new light I don't expect to have it up rightaway but will start doing it as soon as my son has the time. He said he will do all the heavy lifting.

been offline for a little while and whoa things came along quickly smoke!! congrats on the 30 year anniversary!! great gift!!
girls look great and every thing is expanding!! so exciting!

Just thought I'd tell you guys about the new seed that has been germinating, It's the New York Power Diesel feminized and this morning she popped her beautiful head above the soil. I'm so glad this seed popped since I had tried it before and that seed never popped. But here is the NYPD seedling Pic:
IMG_20160408_133704.jpg
Sorry it's not a better pic, I even used the magnifying glass and that only helped a little. Got her about 8" below the lights to make sure she doesn't stretch a lot. Those are the lower powered LED lights and don't make any heat that I can feel.

I just wanted to shout out some thanks here. Smokey - Thanks for having a kickin' journal. I've learned and am still learning from you and everyone here. Another thanks to PeeJay, even though I haven't "met" you, for giving Smoke the recipe for the soil that is doing so well for him. Thanks to all who use his recipes that have vouched for the quality. I am confident that I'll be using the best.

Today, I started reading this journal from the beginning to find the recipe (p. 10) and make sure I get the soil right, and on the way to the recipe, I realized I'm watering my flowering girls the same as I have all along (wet-dry-wet-dry), when I should have been keeping them nice and moist during flower. Learned something that I missed the first time around.

I just mixed my soil up and am excited to put it to use. I don't want to hijack your journal Smoke, I just wanted to give credit where it's due. Thanks to everyone else who has helped Smoke, because you all have helped me and probably many others, too.

Jimmie, If I and the others growers have helped you learn info on your grow through this journal I'm extra happy to learn that this journal has helped other people, because that's one of the ways I plan to pay it forwards (by giving advise when needed, until I turn 60 and supposed to make a little more money coming in). Once I get through my first harvest and curing I plan on looking for people I am able to help with their first grows. But thank you for the kind words regarding the journal and ALL the people who have contributed, Without them, I would've have much of a journal let alone be almost to harvest. I don't know how much credit I can take though....
