Mr. Sniffle's Aurora Indica Indoor Hydro

Hello all! Anyone who may have followed my first two journals knows those ended poorly and that I decided to take my journaling off-line until I worked through some kinks. It's a few weeks later now and I think I have a project that's going well enough that I can provide a reliable journal, so let's get on with it!

The Essentials
Genetics: Aurora Indica from seed (Nirvanashop)
Method: Hydroponics - Ebb and Flow (Hydrofarm Megagarden)
Media: Rockwool and Hydroton
Nutrients: Technaflora BC (full line)
Supplements: Hygrozyme, Liquid Karma, Silica Blast
Lighting: California Lightworks SolarFlare 200w LED (Full Cycle Version)

This journal finds us on day 24 since, as I explained, I waited for these kids to reach a point where I can be sure I avoided the seedling health issues that I experienced in my other two grows/journals.

The plants are given 75% nutrient strength. I started at 25% and moved them up another 25% every four days or so. I was thinking of going to 100% strength when I change the reservoir tonight but they seem to be doing really really well at 75%. Does anyone have advice?

These seeds were started using the 'paper towel' germination method with one difference: I use brown recycled paper napkins rather than paper towels. I have FAR less trouble with taproots and root hairs 'grabbing' the recycled napkins than with paper towels. I've never experienced this 'velcro' effect with the recycled napkins. I think because they're less soft and 'snaggy'.

Have a look at these beauties!

A wider shot reveals the entire system:

These are growing inside of a Lighthouse Hydro 2x4x4 grow tent. Exhaust is handled by a VenTech 4 inch inline fan and a cheapo oscillating fan (seen top left) circulates the air inside the tent one hour on, one hour off.

The small black thing on the right-hand 'wall' of the tent is a Caliber thermometer/hygrometer.

The baseball-sized round thing on the floor of the tent to the right of the Megagarden is a SenseLife Co2 monitor. Co2 is usually pretty consistently reading at 600PPM. Should I consider Co2 supplementation? I figure 600 is fine.

I use a CAP interval timer rather than a plain old outlet timer to run the flood cycles. I flood for 15 minutes every five hours.

Three days ago, I topped the smaller plant (on the left in the above photos) so that it will hopefully produce two main colas. I don't plan to top it again. The following photo shows the top of that plant with a highlighted area showing where the topping was done:

This plant was topped three days before this photo was taken.

The only real 'problem' with this particular grow is that the sex of these plants is unknown. I could be growing two males for all I know. But the main idea of this project was to get beyond my earlier problems with seedling mortality, and I think I've achieved that.

I'll take some clones in a couple of days and try to induce flowering to figure out if I have boys or girls.

Thanks for looking!

Day 29

The plants are growing well, growing fast and look happy.

Some very tiny preflowers have appeared next to a couple of the stipules. To my horror, they both look like male preflowers (the ball on a stick). They are very, very tiny right now (about the size of a bread crumb) In the next 24 to 48 hours they'll probably develop enough that I can be sure. Fingers are crossed!

I tried to photograph the preflowers with my little USB microscope but I couldn't lean into the tent and hold the scope steady enough for a good shot. I'll install the correct drivers so I can snap a shot by pushing the button on the microscope. That way I can hold it with both hands to steady it and get some good photos for the next update.

Aurora Indica, 29 days from seed

Let's check in our friend that we topped in the last update. The highlighted area indicates the spot where two main stems are emerging. Growth at the site is fast and healthy!

This plant was topped eight days ago. It is developing two main stems.

If both plants are dudes I'll be sent back to the drawing board again. If that DOES happen then I'm going to pop a big batch of beans to get myself a couple of girls.

Looking good so far. My AI seemed more sensitive to fertilizer strength vs. some other plants I have grown. I grow in soil so I can't say much about your hydro set up. I just harvested mine.

I found your article because I did an AI search. Make some post in some of the bigger journals if you want some more traffic.

Hi Scarfinger, thanks for the reply!

The preflowers on these guys are still tiny but look suspiciously male to me. I change the reservoir to a bloom solution a few days ago and have been stepping down the photoperiod. Tonight's the first night of 12/12 so hopefully it won't be too many days before the plants reveal their sex.

I'm going to be super bummed if these turds are male, but I have a lot of beans so I'll be able to start another batch. I'm a little disappointed about the idea of having to abandon a third journal (had problems with my first two as well) but it's nothing that starting a nice batch of 10 or 12 seeds can't fix.

Dammit, both of these plants expressed themselves as males after a week of flowering, so I chucked them out.

I'm going to pop a new batch of beans this weekend and try to get a productive grow project off the ground. Actually, this project has gone very well except that I lost a few seedlings along the way and the plants that survived were males. These guys grew really nicely, they just didn't leave me anything to smoke! :skeptical:

I reckon this journal will be abandoned now or very soon.

damn, what a shame. you got real skunky phenos of the strain too, and you're a great grower (by the looks of these plants)

let me know when you start a new journal!

this strain is skunk #1 (sativa x sativa x indica) x an afghani goo plant x n.l.

aka super skunk (sativa x sativa x indica x indica) x n.l.

How did this grow turn out?

We would love to be updated with some pictures and info.

How about posting a 420 Strain Review?

If you need any help with posting photos, please read the photo gallery tutorial: Photo Gallery Guide: How to Resize, Upload & Post Photos

I am moving this to Abandoned Journals until we get updates.

Thanks and hope all is well in your world.

Love and respect from all of us here at 420 Magazine.
