Hello all! Anyone who may have followed my first two journals knows those ended poorly and that I decided to take my journaling off-line until I worked through some kinks. It's a few weeks later now and I think I have a project that's going well enough that I can provide a reliable journal, so let's get on with it!
The Essentials
Genetics: Aurora Indica from seed (Nirvanashop)
Method: Hydroponics - Ebb and Flow (Hydrofarm Megagarden)
Media: Rockwool and Hydroton
Nutrients: Technaflora BC (full line)
Supplements: Hygrozyme, Liquid Karma, Silica Blast
Lighting: California Lightworks SolarFlare 200w LED (Full Cycle Version)
This journal finds us on day 24 since, as I explained, I waited for these kids to reach a point where I can be sure I avoided the seedling health issues that I experienced in my other two grows/journals.
The plants are given 75% nutrient strength. I started at 25% and moved them up another 25% every four days or so. I was thinking of going to 100% strength when I change the reservoir tonight but they seem to be doing really really well at 75%. Does anyone have advice?
These seeds were started using the 'paper towel' germination method with one difference: I use brown recycled paper napkins rather than paper towels. I have FAR less trouble with taproots and root hairs 'grabbing' the recycled napkins than with paper towels. I've never experienced this 'velcro' effect with the recycled napkins. I think because they're less soft and 'snaggy'.
Have a look at these beauties!
A wider shot reveals the entire system:
These are growing inside of a Lighthouse Hydro 2x4x4 grow tent. Exhaust is handled by a VenTech 4 inch inline fan and a cheapo oscillating fan (seen top left) circulates the air inside the tent one hour on, one hour off.
The small black thing on the right-hand 'wall' of the tent is a Caliber thermometer/hygrometer.
The baseball-sized round thing on the floor of the tent to the right of the Megagarden is a SenseLife Co2 monitor. Co2 is usually pretty consistently reading at 600PPM. Should I consider Co2 supplementation? I figure 600 is fine.
I use a CAP interval timer rather than a plain old outlet timer to run the flood cycles. I flood for 15 minutes every five hours.
Three days ago, I topped the smaller plant (on the left in the above photos) so that it will hopefully produce two main colas. I don't plan to top it again. The following photo shows the top of that plant with a highlighted area showing where the topping was done:
This plant was topped three days before this photo was taken.
The only real 'problem' with this particular grow is that the sex of these plants is unknown. I could be growing two males for all I know. But the main idea of this project was to get beyond my earlier problems with seedling mortality, and I think I've achieved that.
I'll take some clones in a couple of days and try to induce flowering to figure out if I have boys or girls.
Thanks for looking!
