Medical Grow

It's tough to tell, because the airpots are 3 gallons and aren't as tall as the plastic pots, which are also smaller.

I do like the airpots, however. The roots seem pretty happy and they aerate well.

I'll probably use the air pots if I like the organic soil mix better than the OC+.....but I can tell you right now, it's going to have to really "wow" me with taste/potency in order for me to continue it. The OC+ are definitely growing larger/faster....but they are also different strains, so the comparison isn't really apples/apples.

One thing for sure....I'm never going to mix up a bunch of nutes that cost so damn much money. I'm an "add water" guy all the way, baby.

thats true since its different strains its hard to compare them.

cant wait to see that root system at harvest.

yup i am not spending money on high price nutes any more. i love the easiness of the TRF and the extra money i save in the long run

intently followed 12/12 grow, will be watching this one as well.
thanks DocBud

Yep. As we learn more about these CRF's we'll do an even better job.
Uncle Ben uses Polyon. I've not tried it yet, but from Lurker's article he posted, it seems to be the most stable with regard to release rate and temps.

It has no micros.....but there are other ways of getting the micros.

Thanks bro!

More 12/12 grows are coming in the future, once this one is near harvest, I'll be popping seeds and growing them out 12/12.

hey Doc, reading your pamphlet, have a question:

Ch 3:
Put some OC+ or Dynamite in the damn bucket....the one with the perlite in it.

how should the OC+ be dispersed within the perlite?
also, can other medium be used? (hydroton, rockwool, sure to grow inserts etc.) and if so, your recommendations on how to use with OC+

kind regards,
naphtali

Put half the CRF in the layer of perlite about an inch above the hole and the other half midway between that and the top of the bucket....or put it all just above the hole.

I would not use hydroton for a hempy, or rockwool. I've seen the STG....I don't like it at all, and I wouldn't use it either.

Apparently Hempy, the inventor of the Hempy Bucket is now using coco. Sounds good to me. The only reason I wouldn't recommend coco is because I don't think it's as stoner proof as perlite. Coco tends to bind up minerals. Perlite is totally inert.

Also, in order for ANY grow to be stoner proof, you've got to have your temperatures under control. Make sure you're in the mid seventies with the lights on and mid sixties with the lights off. Stoner proof.

thanks DocBud,
i have the STG inserts, and i don't think i'm gonna like them at all for my flood/drain table. i prefer the rockwool in my 7" x 8" square containers.

one last question, how much OC+ would you recommend to be stonerproof for 3 and 5 gallon buckets? do i follow instructs on the OC+ container or what?

kind regards,
naphtali

I think about 2 tbsp per gallon of medium would work just fine.

I think i'm going to try my first hempy grow now that i've seen you master it :p

right on naphtali!

I would have probably never heard about hempy buckets without forums like this one.

watching Doc's success with the method sealed the deal ;)

Setting Sun,

don't think for a minute i didn't read thru all of your journals too! all cool stuff man, did you ever get an autoflower strain to autoflower? hehe.

kind regards,
naphtali

As a matter of fact........................

;)

I apologize for the hijack Doc, but I just uploaded those about an hour ago and couldn't help myself.

They are potted in Sunland Organic Soil, straight up, with Dynamite purple CRF for nutes.

Just add tap water for this grow.

outside of watching for pests, this is the easiest and lowest labor way of growing that I've experienced.

Nope, haven't checked the runoff, but I'll check it next time I water them. Easy to do with those little reservoirs at the bottom.

With soil, these pots work *really* well. We just had a few days with temps in the 90's and the plants did fine. Should work even better with coco ;).

Perlite is a fantastic medium for yield and simplicity. However, IMO the taste just isn't as good. It's not bad, mind you, just not exquisite. (at least with my grows)

Here's a little insight into how I'm looking at the whole thing:

The Cannabis industry is going to mirror the wine industry. Just as the average wine consumer evolved from Red, White or Rose to White Zinfandel to "real" wines, Cab's, Syrah's, Pinot's etc. the same thing is going to happen with pot.

Right now, the average consumer wants to get F'd up.....they don't mind coughing a bit....it's all about the effect.

I want to produce exquisite tasting products that are a social lubricant....like wine. Potency is of secondary importance....I want it to taste and smell good, and make people want to talk and laugh....not melt into the couch.

In other words, I want to grow "adult" weed.

In order to bring out those subtleties....I'm gonna need to experiment with soil.

I have to agree with you on that issue. I myself breed and develop my own strains, and with over 20 years of growing experience it seems as if I have used every growing method available. I have grown indoors and out, myself I prefer indoor as I can control all the variables. I have grown Hydro and I have grown in soil and soilless mixtures. While I had very good results growing organic hydro you just can't reproduce the subtle flavors you get out of growing in a nice microbial active medium using all organic nutrients, it just brings out the plants true essence. I have found a happy medium using a combination of soil mixed with perlite, coarse sand, pea gravel and an expanded clay product used in building baseball diamonds, it comes from a company called Terra Hydro Company. Worm Castings is one of my primary building blocks for my soil, along with a good quality composted forest humus and Coir or peat, I prefer coir, I also use several high quality Guanos and kelp powder. I am very particular about my soil blend so I buy all the components and blend it myself, what I end up with is a high organic content soil that drains very well and doesn't hold excess water. In fact it can be watered from once a day to several times a day depending on what you are shooting for, I like this aspect of it because I water using very dilute organic teas and while I get all of the natural flavor from the organic components in the soil I also get an outstanding growth rate comparable to that of hydroponic growth because of the high oxygen level of my soil, I also supplement my soil with mycorrhizae a beneficial bacteria, two very good products on the market are Great White which runs on the expensive side and Rooters Mycorrhizae which is a lot cheaper and an excellent product, I also use a wick on my pots like you to reduce my water perch table. I hope my ideas are of some help to you and I would like to commend someone of your stature in the community for not only supporting the Medical Marijuana Movement but to be so active in it. You have my total respect...:roorrip:

thanks bro! It's great to have you on my journal.

Hey WMD

You said you use wicks in your previous post.
Do you think CRF's will work with a wick system? Do you just add water/nutes to the reservoir or do you water over the top? Any links to instructions of your wick setup?
I used a Rubbermaid wick pot loooong time ago with great results. They dont make them any more. I have also used wicks in outdoor veggies, so so results.

Setting Sun

I see your pics a few posts up with the green pots. I see them in local discount stores a lot. Do you use them like hempys? Or just water till water is seen in the hole?
Planning ahead for my next grow.

Doc, please excuse the questions i had for others in your thread.

If I'm reading WMD correctly, he said he's using wicks like me.....which means we use them as a drain, not as a means of drawing moisture into the pot.

By putting a wick 3 inches into to lower medium and having it drain out the bottom of the pot like a pig tail, you reduce the perched water table, which is healthier for the roots and essentially makes the container larger.

you can top-water them, bottom-water them, or both.

The problem with those pots is that the res at the bottom is small and only works well with soil or coco.

I tried them with perlite and had to water them twice a day, so I don't recommend using them with anything but soil or coco unless you're OK with watering real often.

with soil or coco, however, they work great!

Calcium Nitrate

Hey Doc,

Hey Doc, Im in hempy with crf's. If I need calcium is it calcium nitrate that I need? I just found a big bag of calcium nitrate from my old hydro peppers days. and do you know how much to mix and apply. The bag just says CaNo3 on it, no directions. And I dont remember how much I used. DOH!!
