Magnus8's Canna Cream, Body Butter & Canna Lotion Study Hall

Hello,

Generally speaking, plain infused oils for topical applications are more effective with sativas or indicas ?

Does the 2 type of genetics perform equally well topically ?

Or is the choice between the 2 driven by the condition to treat ?

And to make things even more complex (I may be wrong, but I sense that), used topically, the same genetics may yield very different outcomes in 2 patients afflicted by the same illness/trouble/pain.

Are there, however, general guidelines ?

By the way, does anyone know what happened to what used to be the members’ blog section ?

Sue, maybe try dripping some hot candle wax into the bottom of the containers first to see if that stops the seepage.

When I flew I used an empty chapstick to hide my weed, I put a few drops on the bottom just for the purpose of sealing the hole for odor, then I put some wax on the top of the wrapped up weed and it looked just like a normal chapstick. No smell at all.

I hear the blogs will be returning eventually, so we wait for the return of all that accumulated knowledge.

I make my topicals with whatever I have the most of since it takes a lot of grams to make the good stuff. I haven't got enough spare varieties to do a comparison but maybe someone else here has. I wonder if it's all the same to the nerve endings, as it's not getting into the blood or being metabolized.

Hello InTheShed,

Thank you for the info regarding the blog.

This section was/is in and of itself an invaluable treasure trove.

Hopefully somebody may come shed some light on genetics and topicals. I am sure there’s a lot to learn.

I am very sensitive to THC, even the smallest dose will lead me into out of control bad feelings and increased heart rates.

It may be hard to believe, but I swear this is the truth.

The first time I applied cannabis infused oil -with my bare hands- to a relative who had back pain, half an hour later, I started feeling the onset of a high (which I don’t like).

Obviously, I did not apply enough for the person felt no relief at all...

In this instance it’s not that I did not have protection gloves at the ready. I had in mind what I had learned on 420Mag, that applied topically, cannabis does not get you high. I’ve found out this is not true, at least not for me.

There's always an exception to the rule but I don't want people reading this journal to think they should avoid topicals because it will get them high. The literature out there (as well as countless anecdotal evidence) supports this. Is that the only time it happened to you and is it possible that while there was any oil on your hands it found its way near your eyes, nose, or mouth? A cut on your hand, torn cuticle, etc? I'm just curious as to how much of an outlier you are!

Without the shadow of a doubt I can say that no oil made it to my eyes, nose or mouth. However, I can’t be a hundred percent positive on the state of my hands that day, because I simply do not remember that much detail. But I believe they were free of any kind of injury. I would not have used the oil with wounded hands. I clearly remember reading not to use topical or oil on injuries. Maybe as you said, I may have had torn cuticles that I did not notice.
After that, I’ve kept clear of any topical application with unprotected hands, and figured I was too sensitive to use it on myself.

As soon as I have the opportunity, I’ll make another try, and this time watch for every detail I can think of.

Hello Friends!

I must admit, it's nice to be back.

I must apologize. I have been so terribly busy that my head has been spinning and it is everything I can do to shut off the tablet at night, take my nighttime dosage and then get to bed.

The book is what is taking up all of my time. My editor and I have finished both final edits and then the thing went to the printer. Just got back the digital copies of the book and I am very, very pleased. I really like the font we chose for the story I had to tell. It just really works. But after the edits, the marketing started in earnest.

To date, I have contacted more than 130 bloggers, journalists, writers, critics, etc in an attempt to get my novel out there, reviewed and noticed. I have also spoken with a manager from every single Chapter/Indigo across Canada to try to get Finding Max placed there. And those are only two points off of many that have contributed to my lack of time. At the end of the day I just want to curl up and sleep somewhere soft.

Now don't get me wrong. It is a terribly exciting time in the life of Finding Max and its and my evolution. I am watching my little baby that I wrote only a year and a half a go grow up and move out into the world around us, into the realm of publishers, printers, illustrators, editors, etc. And soon, it will go out into the greatest areana there is... the public arena.

I am alternatively terrified, horrified, electrified, scintilatted, driven, rejected, and more. My fear grows palpably day by day as we approach release date. I have all these ideas i want to implement and no money to do so. It can be frustrating.

But no bother. I love what I am doing. I am living my own dream. To write a stunning novel that is well-received (it has been so far), to market that book the way I see fit (excepting the lack of money, that is) and having a real controlling interest in what happens with my book and why.

Oh, I got my website for the novel up and running! Which, let me tell you was a feat of luck, inspiration and breaking sweats. You see, I have no idea how to write a website, but I think I did not badly on this one, all things considered. So go ahead and check it out:

Home - Finding Max

If the powers that be don't block the URL, that is. I don't think they would. It isn't a weed site and they are pretty reasonable from what I can tell.

Anyway, it grows late. Just want to say HI to everyone and wish you all the best. I know I have been absent, but I jusst haven't had time to get online and play around in the evenings. More like I just haven't had the energy, to be truthful. My back has taken a dreadful turn for the worst this past summer and is very, very slow healing and we don't know if I will even recover from this one. It is as though my muscles in my lower back have just given up with holding me up and so I have been leaning at the waist and to the side throughout the complete day. Very frightening, actually. So that has factored in to my lack of communication, too.

But I hope you will all understand and forgive me.

All my best,
Magnus

ps. keep on mixing!

I just read Chapter One of Finding Max

I can never judge a book by chapter one, because lots of authors get flowery and descriptive at the beginning - you avoided that trap. So well done.

Kidnapped children - I'd read it if you asked, but otherwise pretty low on my reading list - I like my fantasies to feel like a place I want to be - And I've had enough of being a child in the ghetto growing up - so maybe not my cup of tea - but you have a good feel for for pacing and natural internal dialogue.

I wish you all the best.

First of all, thanks for the well wishes about Finding Max. I truly appreciate it. And Sue? I just won't take ANY excuses from you for not reading Finding Max. It is high time (geddit?) for you to begin reading again, n'est pas? Besides, I want you to purchase the digital copy from Amazon and subsequently to write a quick and HONEST review of it there. These initial reviews are essential for future sales on Amazon because when faced with buying a new novel from an unknown writer, if that novel has too few critiques, most buyers would just pass on by. But if there is a healthy numbers of reviews there then they are more likely to buy the book right then and there.

Thanks Radogast. I appreciate your sentiment. You must not be big in thrillers, possibly. But I am pleased you got past you anxieties to fully read the first chapter. The second chapter starts 17 years later if that is any consolation, when the two brothers meet again and must relearn how to love and care about each other again, all the while needing to both outwit and outrun the evil Quinn who seeks to re-abduct Max for his own nefarious purposes.

Next step is working on getting the scent controlled. Some of these women are skittish about smelling like a cannabis consumer. Lol!

Why does your canna-cream smell like cannabis? Mine doesn't. If you're adding essential oils to it, that should mask the cannabis scent. No one I've given it to can smell any cannabis and they only know it's in there because I tell them.

Because the blogs are still missing, my canna-cream recipe is also missing but I found a post by me listing the ingredients I used the last time I made cream along with a link to the now missing blog recipe on this thread so I've cobbled together this recipe and am looking for input on if I'm missing anything important:

Canna-Cream

Ingredients (Weigh all ingredients):

  • 22 grams of beeswax
  • 11 grams of shea butter
  • 10 grams of decarbed Hash Plant
  • 274 grams of sweet almond oil including 174 grams infused with cannabis
  • and, still to be added – tea tree oil, peppermint oil and maybe lavender oil
Instructions:

  • Decarb cannabis in the oven at 230F for 110 minutes.
  • Add oil to mini crockpot and decarbed cannabis. Stir off and on over 3 hours.
  • When the infusion is done, add 100 grams of sweet almond oil, the beeswax and shea butter.
  • Mix well. Add several drops of the essential oil(s) you're using and refrigerate until set.

If there were still Rep points, I would totally be handing one out to you. Thank you for this quick and easy fix.

:thanks:

Edited to add: AND... I've copied and pasted it to a Word document in lieu of being able to "blog a post". :D

Crap, sorry...I forgot to answer your question! The answer is YES, yes you can. I did the exact same thing after discovering my oil was around 7mg/ml. I ran it again per OldBear's recommendation and just added the new number to the old one and got the final concentration up to around 13mg/ml.

Sorry, I don't know the saturation point of THC in these oils.

OldBear's spreadsheet here:
Concentration and Doseage Calculator

Basic instructions:
If you're not doing custom blends like OldBear does, you can just use the first column. It works in grams and milliliters, so you'll need to convert your ounces of oil to ml.

Once you have the spreadsheet open on your computer, you start by entering the percentage of THC you think is in the material you will be using. I always use 10% because I'd rather err on the side of caution. If you know you have a high THC strain you can use a different number there. I leave the CBD % at 0 because there's hardly any in the strains I have on hand.

Next you will enter the amount of material you will be using, post decarb. That weight goes in the spreadsheet where it says "Plant material in grams."

When you put in the weight of the buds and the amount of the oil, the result will be calculated in the green boxes on the bottom right under Dose ML.

REPS to you on this excellent guide to Old Bear's spreadsheet. I've had the spreadsheet for awhile now but the instructions above will help me use it correctly.

:thanks:

That's really funny because after re-reading your recipe above I was going to ask if you had ever calculated the mg/ml strength! The spreadsheet deals in milliliters rather than milligrams like your post so you'd have to convert your oils back first. WHen you've done the calcs post the numbers here. I'm always curious as to what strengths folks are using.

I made a batch of pain cream today using Dave Groomer’s soy wax recipe. Basically it’s 100 grams of soy wax to every cup of infused oil, Dave and I both use the standard of one gram of bud for every ounce of carrier oil used. The infused oil and soy wax are melted in the microwave and the smell softened with the addition of 20 drops of essential oil.

I tell you guys, it doesn’t get any easier than that.

I started with a batch using coconut oil. I prefer the coconut to the grape seed on my face, and that's where the patches of scaly skin are, so I thought I'd try some with the soy wax. I've been using plain infused coconut oil on my face and it's gotten the scales to where they're almost unnoticeable.

I also have a friend I supply who asked for some with coconut oil. That was enough reason for me. :battingeyelashes:

I fragranced these batches with lavender oil. One of these days I'll remember to pick up some peppermint. I think the two together will be heavenly, but lavender melds with the canna scent quite well, and it's my personal favorite for relaxation. Who in pain wouldn't appreciate a little lavender wafting around?

The little holders are great for the pocket or purse, but they leak when filled. I forgot to do them at the freezer door and immediately set them inside.

On to the grape seed oil batch, my most popular offering.

I microwaved the first two minutes in 30-second shots and then finished up with a final burst of a full minute, and a last blast of 15 seconds, bringing the time up to a full 3 minutes and 15 seconds. There was no reason to break it up like that, and it might melt faster if I don't stop it all along the way. Lol!

The point is, it takes no time at all to melt together. Add the 20 drops of lavender oil and pour into the containers.

Two of the containers leaked badly enough that I had to toss them into the freezer. One was so bad that I ended up emptying it into a jar and melting it down again. I left it in the jar.

This wasn't a concern with the beeswax, so there's a slight difference in consistency I'll remember to compensate for next time. I can fill them right next to the fridge and set them directly into the freezer to speed the setting time. It only takes a few minutes to stabalize them.

The small containers leak no matter what. I cleaned these out along the bottom with a toothpick and wiped them good. After they're solid this isn't a problem. I carry one in my jeans pocket all the time to use on anything that goes "Ouch!" or for applying to the DMR.

Another successful batch, and time to buy more deodorant containers. Changing the public perception of cannabis one pain-relieved friend at a time. :battingeyelashes::green_heart:

REPS to you as well, SweetSue! And, :hugs: as well! I've "blogged" this to a Word document, photos and all.

:thanks:

1mg water = 1 ml water
Essential oils are lighter than water (they float). 0.85 - 0.90 is a good guesstimate for cannabis oils.

Almond oil, shea butter, THC oil, and melted beeswax are all going to be in a similar range.

Unless you need scientific accuracy, you can substitute mg for ml and be pretty darn close.

Thanks, guys. I have one question though about my recipe. If after it sets, it's not solid enough for practical use, do I add more beeswax or do I add more shea butter?
