Landrace Genetics 101

What a shame. A lot of that Mexican had fine genetics; it was just grown poorly, harvested too early, packaged when still half wet, stomped on by a 34-ton mouse wearing combat boots, then dropped into a diesel tank to make the journey.

True words. Because Mexican is usually handled so poorly and not grown properly...people think Mex is trash. It isn't. Badly pressed brick destroys the THC content and it makes people think Mex is crap, but some of the finest weed in the world is Mexican.

This is a great educational thread, kudo's to conradino23 for starting this!:thanks:

While I have not fully absorbed the 40 pages yet, I feel this is the right place to get some answers to questions I have!

I am fairly new to the 420 family but not new to growing...35+ years ago!

I decided to spend the holiday with my 87 year old dad who still lives like a stubborn old man at the homestead I grew up on, my dear mother passed a couple years ago, and because she was born in the dirty 30's was a borderline hoarder...Everything was boxed and stored in the basement...knowing this, I was looking to find some of my old '75-early 80's High Times magazines which I really learned to grow from.

So far I have not found the magazines I was looking for, but I did find this;

These are seeds from mid 70's to probably very early 80's that I sorted out of the mostly 1/4 oz bags I could score as is the old Olympia beer tray I used for rolling/sorting!...Mexican ditch weed was the common stuff which was loaded with seeds and not worth trying to grow,so were never saved.

When I could get treat strains like these I always saved the seeds, there were always seeds in the stuff I bought, and this is what I used for my grows.

My question to all of you old growers here is how to or will I be able to sprout these 40+ year old seeds...I am pretty sure the MW seeds are the old Hawaiian Maui Wowie (marked MW), Panama Red (marked P Red) and the (Gold) I think is Colombian, but could also be Acapulco or Jamaican strain..thinking it is Colombian with the 1975 date on the bottle.

I have read that using Gibberellic acid will stimulate old seeds, has anyone used this and if so what dose? Also how do you try to grow these if you can get them to sprout...My grows with these were on average 9 months from sprout to harvest outdoors, I don't have the luxury of outdoors anymore, I am currently set up for indoor RDWC & Coco.

Any advice is welcome from all of you!:peace:

Wow. Cool. Have you tried just soaking one in plain water in a warm environment? Just to see?
:Namaste:

My best idea was OldTimingMan mail them to me so I could give them a try :)

Well, in a perfect world we could all volunteer to attempt to germinate some, post our names & addresses, and maybe each donate a few bucks (both to compensate him for his seeds and to arrange some kind of prize to the person who manages to germinate the most (or one of them?)) . Sadly, this is an imperfect world, and I assume he'll be trying to germinate them all by himself, lol.

Then transport to a towel and keep germinating in proper temperature. If you manage to crack anything that's great, but if you don't that's not the end. Toss them in soil or whatever you have and keep watering. Sometimes it takes 10 weeks, but they sprout eventually!

I would probably skip the step between soaking and planting. I've seen rootlets sort of "stick" to paper towels. I assume the micro-fine root fibers were attaching themselves (seems to be what roots do in nature, lol, so plants don't just fall over when the wind blows) . Maybe not a show-stopper when you have nice fresh seeds, but I'm guessing these would have the deck stacked against them.

Maybe decide on a couple of germination methods and try them both, just to cover all the bases?

You're preaching to the choir on that one. Oaxacan(sp?) sativa will probably always rank in the top five of my personal best list. That, a lucky Neville's Haze winner (big phenotype search on that one)... and something we only knew as "Swamp Bud" that was grown by an old Seminole Indian woman (RiP) in Florida and came around once/year. That one was the only time I ever... "lost my sh*t" in public due to cannabis. That was my introduction to swamp bud - we were heading to work and my brother said, "I only have a little with me, but it's real good, so just take one hit." <COUGH> <COUGH> <COUGHCOUGHCOUGHCOUGHCOUGHCOUGHCOUGHCOUGH> "You'll have to give me another one, I just wasted that one." Err... Whoops. Walked into the convenience store seconds later to get a bottle of pop, walked up to the counter, the girl rang up the sale... And I could not seem to figure out what portion of the change in my pocket to give her, lofl. Finally - there was a big line by this time, BtW - I just dumped the entire handful of change on the counter and said, "You'll have to figure it out, lady. I am SO STONED right now that I can't even think." I think it took her three tries to respond, she was laughing so hard. And then she said, "You didn't need to tell me that. Here, the rest of this is yours." And I must have left a trail of change out to the parking lot, because I had three or four dollars in change and when I got to work and proceeded to dump my pockets so I could work without junk in my pockets, I had three cents left. IDK how many lids we bought between us over a five year period, but neither one of us ever found a seed. Anyone live in Florida, maybe down in the swamps, lol?

Oh, and about a half hour after getting to work that day, I dumped a gallon of oil-based paint into a five-gallon work bucket that had latex in it. And I was standing there trying to tell the boss that it was an easy mistake that anyone could make because all the cans were stacked together. And he said... He yelled, lol, "Not only are the labels completely different, you mixed white paint with GREEN!" Err... It was like bubblegum in the bucket. Florida swamp bud....

or black tea extract.

I read something about that, once, but failed to pay attention. I wonder if some weak (plain) black tea would be of any help in germination?

Slo-Mo Weed...that's real Mex.

The type that captured my heart was probably at the other end of the spectrum. Pure sativa. Almost a trip - including the cheek-hurting perma-grin. I once smoked a joint - that was way more than needed - with a friend, and we were standing against a wall made of sandstone type blocks (an old schoolhouse). We were just standing there laughing like idiots when this giant bird ("It was a bird, man, a giant BIRD. Gee, do you think rocs are actually real?") flew just over our heads, full tilt bozo. We looked at each other, turned around and looked at the (three-story tall) wall... Huh. The mighty sativa. Never did figure out how the bird flew through the schoolhouse, but I sure figured out which sort of cannabis I liked ;) .

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, I do plan on trying to pop some of these, I spent most of the day looking out the windshield and as soon as I got home I tossed them into the freezer, I kept one of each out which I plan on trying to split open to get a idea of what the inside looks like.

I will be ordering some GA3 to help them pop and will scuff them a bit before soaking, I need to spend some more time researching and planning this, the goal would be to concentrate on building a good seed stock which I am not set up for at the moment.

I was planing to start a journal in the next coupe days, but it was going to be a DIY clone grow with the finish of what I have growing now...guess I could include sprouting these to confuse the heck out of everybody including myself!:laughtwo:

I was able to split the seeds without cutting off a finger with the razor blade!:laughtwo:

I think this might be a good sign the inside was a off-white color and slightly wax like, it sticks to the point of the tweezers;
splits_002.JPG

I scuffed/scraped/scored the shell on a couple with the razor blade and put them in a shot glass of tap water to see if anything develops;
soaking_002.JPG

I ordered some GA3 and will attempt to get my clone/old seed/current grow journal started. While my expectations are not high on these two soaking, you never know until you try!

I will update as things progress!:slide:

Anybody have advice on possible Kashmir seeds? Like a kashmir hash plant cross. I enjoy the landrace cross strain like the PCKxKaliChina I just ran. The PCK and the China being the landrace and the Kali being more of a legendary strain, anyway it was a vigorous grower.

Somehow I was thinking and Kashmir came to me as a possible landrace for my future grows. I dunno? I am 'window" shopping at seedsman and dreaming, again.

cheers all

Take a look at Midnight Mass from Heavyweight Seeds - Kashmiri x Bubble Candy ...

Vanilla Kush from Barney's - Kashmir Hash Plant x Hindu Kush ...

Speed Queen from Mandala - Himachal Pradesh Indian ...

Sadhu from Mandala - Himalayan Indian ...

Mandala seems to have worked with a lot of Indian herb. These aren't exactly landraces, but the genetics are there. Speed Queen could be fairly pure, it looks like.

:Namaste:

THX GT!

I should have mentioned Sadhu from Mandala is on my short list. I have been waiting to see what they do next year, Mandala.

Gonna go look at midnight mass from heavyweight, Whoot! : - )

Old timingman, that's one of the coolest seed finds I've ever seen. You should start a grow journal or some sort of thread on the results. Good luck

Thank you for the complement, I did start a journal and was able to add a link to my signature so pop over and watch what happens...but keep your fingers and toes crossed!:wood:

An update to the 2 seeds I dropped in the tap water;
When I got up this morning, I check them and they were still floating so I tapped them and the sunk, I check them about 4 hrs later and they were still at the bottom and I noticed tiny air bubbles attached to them.

I checked them just now and they look the same so we will see what happens in the AM.

Might want to add a few drops of H₂O₂ to the water in one of those cups every 24 hours or so. If you do, I'd be interested in learning which sends out a rootlet first.

Will the 3% stuff work?

Yes, sorry, that's the concentration that I was speaking of. It should quickly "decompose" and provide a boost of oxygen to your water without harming anything (really concentrated hydrogen peroxide qualifies as hazardous material, but you can use 3% strength as a dental rinse).

It might also provide some anti-microbial effect, but I would tend to doubt it when only adding a drop or three at a time. And I wouldn't go nuts and dump more in. I've heard of people adding a few drops of chlorine bleach (specifically for the antimicrobial effect), but I have not done so. As far as that goes, I probably get into a little bit of a hurry when preparing to soak my seeds, and by that I mean that there may still be some residual chlorine from the water (mis)treatment plant that supplies my home.

This (adding a minute amount of H₂O₂ to the water I'm soaking seeds in) is just what I do. It may or may not actually be helping, and I do not believe it can cause harm. However, as I do not know... that's why I suggested only doing it to one of them. Just in case.

Both seeds are in a shot glass, so I dipped my finger tip (after I washed my hands) in the bottle and give em' a stir...so far nothing cracked and we will see if we still have tiny bubbles forming in the AM!:thanks:

I once soaked a seed for... I think it was a week, waiting for it to open. Finally gave up, opened the kitchen door, and slung the water/seed outside.

Wouldn't you know it, I ended up with a seedling five feet from my back porch. Go figure.

Way back when, we used to "clean" our cannabis on double-record albums and then dump the seeds/stems out the window. Same thing happened then. Thank goodness for lawn mowers :rolleyes3 .

Good luck; I hope to see you passing out the virtual cigars soon (the pink ones, hopefully).

Thanks, but I want pink and blue, then they will have their own tent to do what they do, after that I can be more selective!;)

Are you from Arkansas?

Just kidding, lol (~TS~ ducks and runs for cover before the southerners, tired of the jokes about sibling marriage, have a chance to grab their pitchforks).
