JimmieJ's First Grow - Closet - Soil - Bag Seed - CFLs

+reps, I added reps for that one!, DIY cloner looks great even to a newer grower like me! Way to go Jimmie!

Thanks Smoke! If this thing even comes close to what yours does, I'll be happy. The roots you got in such a short time blew me away, compared to what I got after a month. And that month included a lot of babysitting with that damn humidity dome. I appreciate the support!

I looked at the link and your aero cloner is sweet Hoz!!! Now I want to do that, but I will have to wait for a bit. What do the net pots do? Comb the roots so they don't get tangled?

Jimmie, The net pots hold my neoprene inserts in place and since I used a 2" hole saw to make the holes, a 2" insert will fall through. If you use a 1 3/4" hole saw they won't. Since I hardly ever take the top off the bucket except to clean it (like I will after this clone run), the nets make it easier to look at each individual since I clone more than one strain at a time. I have seen some color coded inserts for keeping your strains sorted out, but that was usually in larger plastic totes. As far as combing the root, no....not the purpose of the nets.

Yes, that should do it just dandy. :) Keep an eye on your water level too, it will evaporate with time.

How coincidental, when I put the bag on my bubble cloner a couple years ago the only tape I could find was a roll of furnace foil tape.

I'll watch the water every couple days till I know how quickly it evaporates. I actually did think about that, which is why I drilled the hole for the tubing in the side of the peanut jug, so I can unscrew the lid without disturbing the tubing. This new hobby of mine is making me become creative. No complaints though! I'm enjoying the ride.

That makes good sense. Thanks for sharing - every bit is helping me. :thanks:

Definitely like that diy cloner brother Jimmy! :high-five: I have a bunch of them same sort of containers kickin around too! ( pretzel containers ) It will surely come in handy for ya bud. Im pretty confident it will do exactly what ya need it to do. :thumb:

p.s. That other one that doesnt have a lid now... Cut just below where it starts to taper (roll) back in at the top of its wider cylinder part and... BAM! Humidity dome..

Thanks Logger, I'm going to find out! Ok I just did this - is this what you meant? :peacetwo:

Okay, yes the mother is Chillin 1...in flower.

Now, how big is the pot that the clone is in? The clone looks to be getting pretty big, you might check the roots if you can and transplant to something bigger. I can't really see how big that pot is.

Just a suggestion.

:circle-of-love:

The clone got transplanted into what looks like about a 10oz container maybe a week ago - I have to look. It went south a couple days after transplant so I think I need to let it recover before moving her again. Unless you think moving it to my new soil would be the best bet. My hope for a recovery is throwing her some N (fish emulsion - they seem to love it).

Great tip, Canna! I can't imagine trying to do this all on my own. I'd never get all the details right. Thanks for that piece of advice, it's stuff like this that is going to help me be able to grow all my own meds.

I have foil duct tape - the only duct it's ever been used on is my charcoal filter/fan. :laughtwo:

I cut up a black trash bag, and as I was thinking about which tape to attach it with, I remembered the foil. :cheertwo:

This should do it!

Very 1960s space age touch. I like a good retro-futurist solution.

The drilled tubing hole in the side of the jug is the kind of touch that makes this a great DIY.

I haven't used a humidity dome with splashed roots although I needed one for rockwool cloning. I would try the first 3-4 days of a stemmed clone without the dome. If the bubble mist is strong enough, you won't want/need the dome.

I had a good belly laugh after reading the "1960s space age touch" piece. That's what I've been going for all along, didn'tcha know? :thumb:

My crappy fan leaf started wilting. I had it in the veg closet under the fan and lights. I took it out and put it on the end table and domed it - it perked back up. I'll let it sleep uncovered tonight and see what happens. No matter what, it was a fun project. :thumb:

Putting it on the end table is probably a good choice. I have my cloner bucket 12-20" below the CFL. I keep my newly sprouted seedlings 4-6" from the CFL - so that is a lot less light intensity for clones. I think I probably read that as a suggestion somewhere.

It sort of makes sense that you don't want the chloroplasts in your leaves trying to photosynthesize light at full power when you don't have roots to absorb enough water to feed the conversion of water-light-carbon dioxide into sugar and oxygen. Without roots the leaves might dry out too fast trying to make sugar. I believe this is the same reason people cut their fan leaves when cloning - to slow down the photosynthesis and reduce water usage.

If your leaf perked up - you did the right thing :) It was probably a combination of both the reduced light and the increased water retention of the dome.

That all makes perfect sense. It helps me understand more about plants as well. :thanks:

The fan leaf is still happily hanging out on the end table with no dome, enjoying its bubble bath. Little does it know that it has no hope of ever becoming anything other than mulch.

Chillin 1 clone is doing better now. I don't know for sure, but it really seems like the fish fertilizer and a dash of epsom salt was all it took to turn her around!

I'm going to transplant her into her final home (my new soil) :thumb: as soon as she dries out enough to pop right out of this container.
GEDC1664.JPG

The plan (hope) is, she'll start taking off a few days after transplant, then I'll top her, put the top in my new cloner, cross my fingers on that, and start LST.

By then, her mother should be close enough that I need to start paying real close attention to how the trichs behave, and learn what I need to know on that.

I'm real happy with how things are going, considering where I started. I wouldn't be where I am right now without :420: and the great people here. Thanks everyone. :thumb:
