JimmieJ's First Grow - Closet - Soil - Bag Seed - CFLs

I need someone to clarify something for me. As I learn about my new passion, I've noticed people talking about popcorn buds like they're not as valuable as the big cola tops. Why? Are they less potent, or just not as pretty?

I was making bacon tonight, and as usual, I took out the good pieces for breakfast & bacon cheeseburgers, and let the crumbs collect for bacon bits for tomorrow's salad. The crumbs are just as tasty as the slices, they just don't look as good. Since I'm always thinking in bud mode lately, is this a fair comparison? Cola tops=bacon slices, and popcorn buds=bacon crumbs? Enlighten me, 420 friends!

Popcorn is normally less potent, less pretty , and more work to trim than fat buds high on the stalks.

:hippy:

Less potent, because lower on the plant and thus slower to mature. In many hybrid strains, popcorn is more of a head high than a couchlock body high.

It takes about the same effort to trim a single small bud as a single large bud - but the weight of the popcorm bud may be 5-10% of the top cola for almost the same amount of work.

Popcorn buds tend to be light and airy instead of heavy and firm.

:hippy:

I don't mind a little popcorn, but I prefer heavier nugs.

Thanks as always Rad. Being my first grow, I will enjoy trimming each bud, no matter how long it takes. Next time, maybe not so much. Popcorn will be good practice and fun to smoke.

Head high vs. body high. I like both, and want to be able to take my pick. That's something to learn how to do, and growing my own will hopefully let me do that.

Howdy fellow cannabis connoisseurs. Here's how the girls look today. Left to right - Handy Dandy 1, Chillin 1, Chillin 2

This one is of Chillin 1 from last night, and even though it's not focused, I like it because once the rest of the fan leaves fall off, it's going to look great

I really lke the shape and form of Chillin #1.

You've done yourself proud.

They all look great, nice even canopies on all of them well done :)

Thanks guys! I really worked at keeping them short and even because I'm using CFLs. I wonder if I'll be able to keep my next batch under control. I'll be using my new soil - Smokey's recipe that he got from PJ. I'll have the last two ingredients this week. :yahoo:

My new 40x loupe came. I don't think it's a 40x at all - it's possibly a hair better than my 10x, so I have to get a better one I guess.

I was using the new loupe to look at my trichomes and I think I spotted the dreaded hermie. Can someone please confirm or deny my findings? And let me know what to do.

I spotted the little "banana," which got me looking harder and I think I spotted balls here and there. This is Chillin 1, I haven't inspected the other girls yet, and now I'm almost afraid to expose them to her till I know what's going on.

The ball you picked was a seed pod (calyx) but the first definitely a 'nanner
It pays to stay vigilant! Your loop is fine though...good pictures!
HOZ

Thanks Hoz! So do you think I'm over reacting about the calyx, but am right about the nanner? Or both need to be plucked? I inspected the other girls just before lights out and neither has any sign of calyx or nanners.

I put the suspicious girl back in the flower room because I don't have anywhere else to put her. If I thought it was an emergency I'd have found a place to put her, but it wouldn't have been good for a plant.

Swollen calyx is not a bad thing, but if a seed was forming in there, where did it get its pollen??? Sound like "Hermie" showed its head! Saw something about "nanner seeds" I will do some checking to see if I can find some helpful info. Maybe HERE
I hope this helps!
HOZ

I can't say that a seed was forming in there or not. But being my first grow I just don't want to poison the other girls and I might be overreacting.

From checking your link, it looks like nanners aren't the end of the world if I check often and thoroughly, and keep them plucked. Thanks for the link Hoz!!!:thumb::thanks:

Just a quick update. It's getting to the end of flower week 6 for two of the three girls. They're still kicking and seem to be happy.

The veg closet is looking ok. The two little clones are healthy and ready to be transplanted. The sickly clone on the left is not happy. I'm working on figuring out what she wants. I now have all the ingredients for my new soil:cheertwo::thumb::cheesygrinsmiley::allgood::clown:, so tomorrow I'll mix it up and get to work and watch the beauties come to life in their new homes.

The still unsexed plant in the middle above is beginning to show improvement and grow. A few days ago, I cleaned it up, gave it a dose of fish emulsion and added a pinch of epsom salt. I don't have cal-mag yet, and don't know if I'll even need it with my new soil. But I have epsom salt, which will provide the mag, so I used it. Look at the pic below from a little while back, and it's clear (at least to me) that this plant is happy with what I did. I'm certain that it's greening up finally. I should've taken a pic between the one above and below. There were leaves that were almost white. I'm hoping to get a feel for what these plants need and how to make them happy. I'm going to repeat what I did next time it's thirsty. I haven't been able to try this on the sickly clone because she hasn't dried out just yet and don't want to keep her too wet.

Today was a good day. I finally collected all the ingredients for my new soil, so I mixed it up, and it's ready to go.

The recipe is courtesy of PeeJay (haven't met him but the credit is his). I believe it's a custom recipe for Smokeater, as he is on a budget, like I am. I've been following Smokeater's journal since the beginning and this is what he used (no idea what brands he used, this is just what's available to me), and he's had fantastic results with it. Recipe is at the bottom of this post.

1.75 gal containers that I'm going to be using
GEDC1614.JPG

The holes are pretty big, so I put down some newspaper to prevent soil from falling out
GEDC1615.JPG

I've learned to not keep the soil low in the container, because it can create dead air space, plus, why not give the girls as much soil as the container will hold so they can spread their roots. I left a little space at the top to allow for the addition of the soil that will come with the transplants. It will settle after waterings too, and I hope I guessed correctly and that I'll have just a bit of space. We'll see!
GEDC1616.JPG

This is what's left after filling my four 1.75 gallon containers. Plenty to use for transplanting my clones into a new, healthier soil that they can begin to thrive in.
GEDC1617.JPG

Here's the recipe given by PeeJay:
15 Gallons Peat
5 Gallons Perlite
3 Gallons Worm Castings
1 Gallon Yum-Yum
1 Quart Azomite
3/4 Cup Lime

Here are the proportions that I used. I did the math, and if I did it correctly it's just a third. I went with this due to budget and what it takes to fill the four 1.75 gallon containers that I'm going to use next. This also leaves me enough leftover soil for at least two more 1.75 gal containers.

5 Gallons Peat
1-2/3 Gallons Perlite
1 Gallon Worm Castings
5-1/3 cups Yum Yum Earth Food 2-1-1
1-1/3 cup Azomite
1/4 cup Lime
1-1/2 gal water to mix it all up and it handles like a dream.

That was a nanner you found Jimmie, and HOZ was right on the seed pod forming. If you have nanners, you're going to have pollen. It won't be near as much pollen as a regular male plant would produce, nanners on females work a little differently. BUT, where there's a nanner...there's going to be pollen.

I would move it away from anything you don't want to take a chance on. Nanner + Seed forming calyx = possible pollination of other girls. I've had this happen, a couple nanners...a little breeze from a fan....pollen gets around. Just my humble opinion.

Your plants are looking good. Congrats on getting the soil going too. You're going to be very happy with that!
