JimmieJ's First Grow - Closet - Soil - Bag Seed - CFLs

I think I have my air cleaner situation done, and on a budget!

My furnace has a central humidifier on it, but I haven't used it in years because it's high maintenance and if it's not emptied and cleaned after heating season, mold and mildew start collecting in the standing water. Looking at the shape of the carbon filter that Smokey has made me think of the humidifier. I thought that if I could take the inner wheel and put some carbon filter next to the water pad, then adapt it to a 6" pipe, I'd be set. So that's what I did.

Supplies

The carbon is exactly 4x the size of the water pad from the humidifier. I have 4 filters worth of carbon

It works with no loss of airflow! I even folded the kleenex in half to see if it would hold

I think I'll light a stick of incense in the closet and see if the carbon is doing its job. I don't know how effective these flat pieces of carbon are, so this is just a cheap experiment.

I started getting the ingredients for the PJ soil that Smokey uses. I think this is his - it's what I wrote down. Peat/perlite/worm castings/yum yum 2-1-1/azomite/lime.

I have everything except the azomite and yum yum.
I have a feeling that the yum yum is only going to be available online for me. Does anyone have an alternative that would be easier to find at a garden center?

Disclaimer: I have no brand preference, I don't get to pick brands here

I've decided to go with four 1.75 gallon containers for now. If I'm going to be doing a perpetual grow, these will be ideal for keeping two in veg and two in flower, given my lighting, space, consumption needs, etc. I also need to be able to easily get them into the sun as desired.

The croton will go into Handy Dandy 1's container when she's done with it. I think the timing should work out well. If not, croton goes into a bucket temporarily.

Nicely done with the homemade filter +reps

If one layer of flat carbon filter doesn't do it, maybe two layers will :)

Looks like the right stuff, Mine was sent in bigger bags, but they seem right. The 2 pots with smooth sides look exactly like my 3 gallon pots. The only difference is I drilled holes along the very tops to tie down tall stalks. I have only done it to the ones with plants in them so far, but I think they are the same pots.

I have more of some of the ingredients, I only posted one of each of what I have. Larger bags aren't available, at least not this time of year. I also divided each of the ingredients of your "custom PJ recipe" by 3, thinking that will fill my needs for my next grow, and I'll hit Dennise up for what she uses as amendments when it's time to reuse this stuff.

You know how I am with training, so I'll definitely be drilling holes. The LST did wonders for my girls, keeping them short and bushy, which is a must with CFLs and their limits. My mind is wandering into the world of LED now. But I need to stop, take a deep breath (or hit:cool:) and prepare myself for the credit card bill before I buy anything else... In time.

Unfortunately Yum Yum is only available online in a lot of areas. PeeJay was fortunate in that he had a local retailer that carried it.
You might call around to your local nurseries and check first. Otherwise, scamazon and such will have it.
I have to order mine online. BUT, I have free worm poo here by the bucket fulls, so it all evens out in the end. LOL

GREAT job on that homemade filter! +reps from me as well.

What better way to test a filter with something smelly and organic than an onion. This should put my new filter to the test.

I didn't smell one motherflippin thing when I went down and sniffed the air coming out of the new filter. Actually, I did. It kind of smelled like the clothing section at Sears. Not cannabis or onions though. I'll check again tomorrow after work when my nose is reset. I'm pretty hopeful though.:thumb:

Thanks for that info Canna. And thanks for the compliment on the filter. I have to go find out what reps are. Thanks to all who left them!

Welcome Hozona and the girls and I love it too! I can shut off the fake lights, save $$$ and the girls get the absolute best of the best in lighting!:thumb:

Jimmie, The one thing you have to stay vigilant about is pests. Outdoor guerilla growing has worked for me. (My electric bill likes it too!) Most of the time with good results. I am looking for GREAT results this year in an effort to do justice to the BID genetics :cheesygrinsmiley:

HI Jimmie, reps are what people give you by clicking on the little sheriff's badge under the member name at the bottom of the post. It's next to the little triangle to report a post.
When a member gives you +reps it affects your green bars under your name. More reps = more recognition status.
You can see what a member "repped" you with by clicking on "user cp" and then "notifications". There you see reps or likes.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the heads up on pests Hozona. Check out the post on this journal from Radogast yesterday - he outlines his regimen that includes pest control. Summer's coming and believe me, I'm not letting bugs steal what I've been working for!:thumb:

With the set up and great soil ya have Jimmy ya should be able to easily pull an oz per gallon of pot size.. I do it on accident under CFLS.. But I only use 1-2 gal pots.. My last grow was a shit show so to say... 5 oz bud , 6 oz trim and popcorn buds..( super medibles!) 14 plants averaging 16'' tall. And they were taken at week 5-6 of flower due to hermies. Damn bag seeds! Smoke was definitely worth the heartache however... And the medibles more than filled the void. :thumb:

It would be great getting an oz per gallon... in my dreams only right now. The current plan going forward is 1.75 gal pots using PJ's custom mix for Smokeater. Sorry to hear of your hermie troubles. I better watch for those as well as pests. Today was the first I've really even thought pests would be an issue, but after seeing Rad's post, then Hozona's, I am going to be proactive with this. Where would I be right now without :420: and all you guys! :thanks::thumb::Love:

Howdy Logger! Thanks for that info. I didn't know that the higher numbers just meant a higher concentration. So if I needed a 1-2-1, I could adjust 15-30-15 accordingly? That's how I'm reading it. Very good info. Now I think I'll switch to tomato food for the duration unless someone tells me otherwise. The girls are going into week 6 of flower so I guess I need to do this to get some bud building food.

Exactly my friend. A ratio is just a division of parts. If you are using MG Bloom Boost Id stay with it for another week. Cut it in half though. Water 1/2 what you would when its needed then introduce the TF a day after at 1/2 strength. (1/4 tbsp or 1/2 of the small end of the included food scoop) By the next time she be thirsty straight to the finish food. :thumb:
