JimmieJ's First Grow - Closet - Soil - Bag Seed - CFLs

Good morning and Happy Easter from the girls & me. If you don't celebrate Easter, then happy Sunday! Nothing exciting going on, just a little update.

Here's a before and after pic of the girl I flushed the other day

She looks to be perking up. Still a homely girl, but she's trying. Once she dries out, I'm going to give her some fish fertilizer and see if she'll green up and actually grow some branches in her lower area.

Chillin 1 clone is also looking happier. Look at the pic from the other day when I transplanted her, compared to the one above from this morning

Whatever happened that caused Chillin 1 to rapidly yellow seems to have stabilized or at least slowed down. I think I overdid the nutes a little though, because the tips of the leaves have a touch of brown now. She just had plain water to drink today so I'm not worried about it, but will keep a close eye on her.

Today

I was wondering if it was good to take the dead leaves, grind them up and leave them in the container as food. I did a search and evidently, the decaying leaves attract pests, so I'll just crumble them and sprinkle onto the lawn.

A little housekeeping

Everyone enjoy the rest of the day! :thumb:

I almost forgot. Handy Dandy 1 clone looks like she might have started to take root. The leaves almost touch the sides of the dome, so it's going to be really easy to spot growth now. I took the dome off to gauge how long it takes to wilt and will keep track over the coming days. That should tell me how any rooting is coming along.
GEDC1378.JPG

I'm pretty certain that it'll root just fine now. It's been a few weeks and it's looking mighty happy.

I couldn't resist messing with Handy Dandy 2. This thing was such an eyesore that I had to do something. It's in time released potting soil, and I just learned that you can't really flush the stuff thoroughly, you don't know which nutes it's getting and when, so... I'm stuck with it as-is and it's either going to live, or it's going to die. So I gave it a makeover. I was surprised that there were actually branches in all of that fluff so I did a little LST on it.

Now some people swear by defoliating and some swear by not. I haven't before now because I think that healthy fan leaves store energy that they might need. How could they not? The fan leaves on this one sucked, so snip snip snip! I'm starting to have hope for this one. :cheertwo:

Time for a clone update. Handy Dandy 1 clone was doing so well, I was convinced that she was taking root. Well, I was right. But she seems to have taken a turn for the worse. Yesterday, the leaves were almost touching the sides of her dome. This morning, they were brushing up against the dome, clearly growing. When I got home this afternoon, she looked a little stressed, but nothing too bad.
GEDC1399.JPG

I looked underneath, and A ROOT!
GEDC1402.JPG

Five minutes of being uncovered and she wilted as if I plucked her from the soil and tossed her aside.
GEDC1412.JPG

Roots are showing, plenty of moisture, and suddenly this. Maybe the stem is rotting. I'll keep an eye on it. It started recovering within a half hour after replacing the dome. Not really sure what it means though.
GEDC1423.JPG

I have another clone that I rooted in water. I don't know exactly which plant it's from, all I know is that it wasn't from the male that I destroyed. So unless it's from the hideous beast, who is unsexed, it's a female... So I'll name her Peggy. Peggy's roommate started looking sickly in the small glass that she was sharing, so I decided to put Peggy in soil so she could have her own place away from the sickly one. She looks fine so far.

Chillin 1 clone's roots took off like crazy. Before placing her in the new up-sized container, I sliced the root ball in three places like Radogast suggested, and the roots are already starting to poke out of the bottom. Thanks for that bit of advice, Rad, I couldn't be happier with how they grew.

:ciao: JimmieJ

I'm a good chearleader, you need one?

Dead leaves or defol trim can be mixed into the soil so they can decompose, but never just left on top. You did good on your reading on that one. ;-)

I love cheerleaders and would love to have you cheering for my team, Canna! Thanks for your input on the defol.:thumb:

Quick update. Handy Dandy 2 is going to make it. The new growth is looking fine to me. A little adjustment on the LST and it almost looks like it can become a proper Cannabis plant now. Still in veg so it might be a boy.
GEDC1426.JPG

Handy Dandy 1's clone should make it too. Last night I saw one root, tonight I see three. I think my temps are too high at 86F today, but watching things very closely till she stops wilting after a minute outside of her dome. I think she just needs to be hardened off now.

:passitleft: High Jimmie... apparently I am following Canna around the site today.....:circle-of-love:

:rofl::rofl:

I was going to say that at some point this evening.

Similar thread subscriptions and similar available time to get around, sometimes it appears that way doesn't it?

Skip to the pics if you don't want to read my rambling.

I was freaking out about some yellowing going on with Chillin 1, but I'm not worried about it now, even though today it's worse. I googled and found a piece about fan leaves. At the stage of flower that she's in, the fan leaves evidently start donating their valuable juices back to the plant for the greater good, and then fall off because the plant is concentrating on buds rather than its overall health.

It's a nice theory if it's true. Well upon close inspection, the fan leaves are indeed the ones that are yellowing and dropping. Fine with me! The leaves around the flowers are just fine. I bet if I had defoliated all along that I wouldn't have had this yellowing. First grow here so no way to know for sure yet, but something to keep in mind. I'm sure there's a reason why defoliators like Dennise have 10 foot buds.

Not too bad, and she seems to be having fun making buds

Now Handy Dandy 1 is still looking so happy, I guess she's really trying to make me some top shelf bud. I can't wait for the day when a beauty like this can be set out as a houseplant.

One last quick update. Chillin 2 is looking happy, despite being in the time release potting soil that I regret. She's the one that I sent into flower way too early because of not enough veg lighting available. So far so good. I'm sure this lack of veg will take a toll on yield, but it sure kicked her into gear and got things moving right along. I'm new so I'm telling myself that this is just practice. I need to experiment anyway so I'm sucking this all in like a sponge.

Oh, look, yellowing fan leaves. Yawn. I hope.:cheesygrinsmiley:

Lookin good Jim. She looks like she could use just a lil N.. Maybe toss her a lil worm shit and water in well. Cal/mag is also a definite. She needs it. Every fan leaf feeds a stalk at a bud site. She seems to just need a lil lunch buddy. :thumb:

I agree with STIHL LOGGER,
She needs some food. It's okay for a lower leaf or two to yellow in time, but you have a lot of them there in higher areas, and there is some brown crispy going on with them as well.

Worm poo would be great. And Cal/Mag I always keep on hand. Some plants need more than others. Possibly a lack of phosphorus as well. I'm going to find the link to the plant deficiency chart so you can take a look and compare notes on what you have there.

:thumb:

Check out this post for some plant problem solvers. There are a lot of charts out there to look at for deficiencies, this is just the one I came across fairly quickly.
