InTheShed Grows Inside & Out: Jump In Any Time

I bought some soil today.
Oh boy, Happy Frog. I like using HF throughout the whole grow rather than Ocean Forest. I just like the texture of it better than OF.

Much less than I was expecting at only $12.50/bag!
Wow! That’s a great price for a 2 cu ft bag.

First I needed to mix up the substrate, so I went with 3 parts FFHF and 1 part rinsed perlite.
Mix mix stir stir, all done
Looks good to me.

Afternoon/evening all! Here's the Friday transplant update seeing as how I bought two bags of FoxFarms Happy Frog.

First up was the two Summer Grow plants, a Trainwreck from @Weed Seeds Express and a Purple Urkle freebie from I don't remember where:

First I needed to mix up the substrate, so I went with 3 parts FFHF and 1 part rinsed perlite. I added a bunch of @DYNOMYCO because why not!

Mix mix stir stir, all done:

Here are the roots on the Purple Urkle:

Because they're so packed in, I sliced them down the sides with a razor blade, sprayed them with water, and sprinkled more @DYNOMYCO on them. You can just make out the downward slices if you zoom in:

Here are the roots on the Trainwreck. These didn't need slicing though I did break up the bottom a bit:

All done. I took off the first two nodes on the TW and the first node on the PU:

They got 4.5g equivalent nutes (that's my full strength veg mix, but I think they can handle it), mostly where the original rootball is because soil's capillary action is even great than ProMix HP.

Next up was the lime clone that took a year outside in the shite soil to show any growth. Here it is in the faded solo cup:

The roots of citrus trees are very woody:

I mixed in 2 tablespoons of GeoFlora to keep it happy and watered it from the hose down the middle. All done:

And that's it for me playing in the dirt! I hope your Friday is going well and that the weekend is both relaxing and productive. :)

Quotes:

It's definitely not that I can't stand the stuff! It's a perfectly good source of potassium and sulfur if that's what you need in your nutes. What makes it funny is that they would send 2.5 gallon bottles as part of every OTM prize package, and you only tend to use it 5ml at a time and only in flower. You can see why a little would go a long way, not to mention saving on shipping!

Good question Baked! I plan on making no changes to my nutes, which will continue to be a blend of MC, monosilicic acid, 0-0-0 cal-mag, ammonium nitrate, and magnesium nitrate. Whatever nutes may be cooked into FFHF at the factory will be ignored, which would have been the same if it was FFOF.

Only so much shelf space I reckon. Soil bags take up a lot of room on the warehouse floor. That and those two being most popular. Still, not available at the big box stores here or even the local big nurseries. I had to go to LA Garden Supply to get it. It's a huge hydro warehouse near me, and the only place I could find the ProMix HP as well.

Nah Verbalist, no need to panic! Everything else I've been doing will stay the same. @MrSauga's hope is that I will eliminate the pH shift that comes with ProMix HP. I'm actually slurry-testing the Jack Herer right now to see what blend of nutes to mix next. That and the Candida will be the last two in ProMix, for a while at least. If this summer's grow turns out well with no issues, I will stick with the FFHF going forward.
Nice! I have the exact same house coating as you. I love how the plants look with that as the background. You can really see how spectacular your green is in this picture.

So when you say you "broke it up a little" (the bottom part of the roots on the one plant), is that as simple as using your fingers to kind of loosen the round swirl at the bottom? And when you do this "loosening" is it to the point that the roots that are swirled are then hanging down loosely when you put it in the dirt, or less than that? Thanks!!!

Meh I was hoping for it :cheesygrinsmiley:
So, what pH level is the new potting buffered to? I think anything above 6.5 and below 7 would be good if you're a heavy feeder.
Even soil pH tends to fall down pretty fash when using synthetic ferts. Or did I get the pH drift ting rite? :laughtwo:

Anyway good luck with that I'll try to lurk in more often!

Nice write-up, Shed- Thanks!

I've got a lime tree that I've sawed off at ground level 3 times, and it just keeps coming back...probably need to kill those roots somehow...
I'd let it grow, but it's got nasty spikes on it about an inch long, and it's in a bad spot...It's trying to grow where I plant my weed...

How large is the tree? So when you cut the trunk back to the soil line, drill a hole or holes if it's a large enough trunk. You can get commercial trunk killer solutions or make your own. Rock salt, vinegar, and soap is one of the simplest ones. Other option is to dig it out completely.

Thanks, Baked!
How large is the tree?
The stump is only about 2" across, I'll get out the 1/2" wood bit and drill some holes- I've got some stump killer around here somewhere... :hmmmm:
Other option is to dig it out completely.

I considered that, but it's growing right in the middle of our "pet cemetery", where the kids have buried
all their pets ( the dead ones:)) over the last 28 years, so I'd be digging up rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, lizards, snakes, and cats and dogs. That's probably why that lime tree is so persistent- lots of great nutrients in that soil...
Weed also does real well there...

Dig a couple inches around the trunk and maybe a few inches deep. Get a cheap 12" Sawzall blade and cut all the primary root structure, including the tap root. Done! Yank it out. That's a small trunk. Shouldn't take too long and you don't need to worry about excess chemicals in the soil for your future plants. After you finish cutting out the trunk and cut through all the main roots, nothing should grow back. I'd do that instead of drilling and stump killer.

I've got a sawzall and a 12" demolition blade, so that stump's days are numbered!
Thanks, Baked!

No need to be embarrassed Jon...you'd have to be here day in and day out to have gotten that!
And many might think you were lucky to have missed those questions! :laughtwo:

Have fun playing in the dirt Shed! I had a great run with ff potting soil last summer in some of my ornamentals. They absolutely loved it!
Thanks Otter! I'm looking forward to a grow where I don't need to slurry test. :thumb:

It was nice to get my hands into soil again after so many years of fluffy ProMix. I do think the 25% perlite will help though, as I'm used to a porous medium
Wow! That’s a great price for a 2 cu ft bag.
I know right? I was expecting closer to $20! And it's about $5 cheaper/cu.ft. than the ProMix HP.
Looks good to me.
:thanks:
Glad you got the soil you needed with no issues this time . Little ones look happy that was a lot of root binding on the one.
Thanks sb! It was definitely time to move that Purple Urkle.
:cheesygrinsmiley: Thank you dynamo!

Whenever you're passing through Verbalist! :ciao:

And I think all soil is buffered in the 6.3-6.8 pH range to prevent micro-nutrient toxicity. They're absorbed more slowly at higher pH.

Almost every SFR in Los Angeles is wood frame and stucco. It's the best material in an earthquake!

Yes, and yes. :thumb:

Glad to help Carcass!

Damn it wants to live. I'd dig it up and relocate it somewhere where it can grow unfettered if you have a spot for it.

Oof, damn! :rip:

Could be...I think I won some seeds from Cannapot so maybe the Purple Urkle came along for the ride with those. :hmmmm:

When I bought mine they were on a closeout for like $2 a seed. That was with a 20% off coupon for POTM and included shipping. So stands to reason that they'd be throwing them in as freebies. Mine weren't yielders but boy did they put a smile on your face. Sedentary relaxing bud. We call it Joker weed. My other buddy calls that type of high "everything is alright". Very mood lifting.
