Icemud's Intelligent Gro 2 LED Grow With V-Scrog - Going for 1lb & Beyond!

re: Icemud's Intelligent Gro 2 LED Grow With V-Scrog - Going for 1lb & Beyond!

I'll agree with tavosvo on the S&P fans...I've been using a 150 for the past 4 years and the thing has never missed a beat...

Highly recommended...

Sorry Ice i haven't stopped by in a bit your tent is packed full right on yield looks like it will def be up from last round! Thanks for stopping by my "party" LOL it's nice in there huh?

Brother k0ncept - check out Soler and Palau they make some really epic fans. Absolutely silent. I have a tds-100 and tds 150 in my room and can't tell if they are on or not. Price is pretty good too around $200 for the bigger one. Check it out!

Thank You for the tip!!! That is exactly what I am looking for... I want silent and stealthy :)

Ditto. I have a tds-100. It's been running 24/7 for a year without issue.

re: Icemud's Intelligent Gro 2 LED Grow With V-Scrog - Going for 1lb & Beyond!

Thank again Ice.. I am getting there... Just waiting on a couple more things to come in the mail and in a few days time I "should" be starting my noob journal into how to research everything and still FAIL lol.. But as soon as the veg tent gets here I am going to get it all setup.. Only thing im hung on is air flow, and how best to set it all up... I watched a horrid video the other day on you tube, where a guy sets up his tent in his bedroom using booster fans and when he is done that tent must have been over 85-90 decibel's..

I am looking ahead, and have been researching QUIET intake and exhaust fans, I have a 230cfm exhaust mounted in the ceiling, I placed it in here a few months back for when I enjoy a smoke, as much as I love smoking, I still love fresh air. That 230cfm in the ceiling is like 6.5 sones well 6.5 is not really quiet.. So I was looking at the ball bearing inline fans that are pretty pricey, but I think my sanity is worth every penny in the long run... What type and how loud are yours? cuz they don't seem very noisy when I watch your vids.. I could handle that :) and again, thanks for the tips! cant wait for the next update and this one to finish I cant wait to see the finished product!

What size tents and lights did you decide on? That will help with deciding what you need for ventilation. For my veg tent I am only using a cheap inline fan like this for exhaust since its not running a carbon scrubber (they add restriction and would require a real fan) and it pulls more then enough air.

On my flower tent I have a 6" canfan max. I picked this one since it has a built in speed controller with a few speed settings. I run it on the lowest setting and its just right. I spent a lot of time researching speed controllers and fans and the end result was that it is really difficult to get one setup that works properly without humming and its not really good for the fan unless you spend a lot of money on the correct gear. In general running a bigger fan at a lower speed will get you a quieter setup but figuring out how to run the fan properly at lower speeds can be challenging.

I have phresh intake filters on both tents and run the exhaust fan that sucks in through the carbon scrubber that is inside the tent through the fan and out the tent in my flower tent. I had a lot of conflicting info also when trying to design all of this. Let us know if you have more questions.

That was kinda confusing, lets try this. Intake filter outside of tent passive intake -> Carbon filter in tent -> Fan in tent sucking through carbon filter -> run the exhaust out of the tent. :thumb:

re: Icemud's Intelligent Gro 2 LED Grow With V-Scrog - Going for 1lb & Beyond!

Those fan speed controllers that hydro shops sell are junk. They phase the power on and off real fast to slow the fan. Makes a humming noise and not so good for the fan. If needing to control fan speed to reduce noise levels, use a variac.

Yup but if I remember correctly you need fans made for this for it to work correctly also. I could be wrong its been a while since I researched all of this.

I really wanted my exhaust fan to be temp controlled so as the temps raise the fan speed would increase with it but I ended up giving up it was just to much of a pita and money to be worth it. Would of been a nice setup though :/

Yes Smokey I actually found some info that might help till Ice gets back..

II. Know More About Your Fan
AC fans use many types of motors but three types are important to us cabinet-bedroom size growers, shaded pole induction motors, permanent-split capacitor (PSC) motors, and AC-DC Universal motors (Brushed Motors). For a list of motor type based on manufacturers, see numeral III. Shaded pole induction motors are simple single phase motors known for low starting torque and long duty cycles. PSC motors are also single phase motors but unlike shaded pole motors, PSC motors use a capacitor to help them start. AC-DC Universal motors are general purpose motors found in many household appliances like power drills and vacuum cleaners; their short service life makes them an unattractive option for fans. There are other types of AC motor that have been used for ventilation purposes, but aside from shaded pole, PSC, brushed motors, and three phase motors (which are beyond the scope of this course), ac motors are unable to be speed controlled without serious modification and/or risk.
There are primarily two ways to control the speed of these motors, voltage control and frequency control; see numeral IV for more information.

III. Fan Manufacturer List
This information is relevant as of march 2009 but always be sure to double check by contacting your retailer or fan manufacturer! Using the wrong type of control with your equipment puts the fan and your controller at risk. This section is always in need of additions and corrections so if you have anything to add, post it or send me a P.M. and I'll be sure to include it.

Permanent-Split Capacitor
-Dayton squirrel cage blowers (Generally PSC motors, but they also make a shaded pole version)
-S&P Mix-Vent TD line
-Grainger squirrel cage fans

Shaded Pole Motor
-Vortex
-Can-Fan
-Valueline
-Elicent
-Active Air

IV. AC Speed Control Methods

Voltage
-Rheostat (Old dimmer switches): Poor choice, excess power converted to heat.

-Triac (New dimmer switches): Poor choice, inherent problems with triac controls risk fan lifespan.

-Triac w/ Snubber circuit (Fan speed controllers, Solid state controllers): Good choice, snubber circuit removes most of the risk to the fan. Still not the best because it can cause some motors to hum.

-Capacitance level control (No hum fan speed controllers, 3 speed controllers): Good choice, only limited by the discrete speed choices, no infinite control.

-Variable autotransformer (Variac): Better choice, continuous sine wave of a lower voltage (unlike a triac which chops up the sine wave to acheive a decreased voltage) allows fan operation with no hum.

Frequency
-Varable Frequency Drives (VFD, AFD): Best choice, complex circuitry senses changes in the motor allowing it to vary frequency of the AC source as well as the voltage which maintains a constant torque, unlike voltage regulation.

V. DC Speed Control Methods
DC speed control is much simpler than AC speed control. In order to lower the speed of a DC motor we must lower the voltage, this is accomplished in various ways. Linear voltage regulation relies on resistors, and diodes to remove the excess voltage as heat. Pulse Width Modulation sends bursts of energy to the fan and the averaging effect results in a lower net voltage and reduced energy use.

My fans are hydrofarm 6" fans, and they are on fan speed controller set to mid-high. The fans are definitely loud, but I helped mask the sound by laying soundproofing over the top of my tent, and in one tent even put a piece of sound proofing above my fan to help reduce audio reflection. If sound is a concern, may want to go with 2 smaller fans on speed controllers...like 2 4" fans, instead of 1 6". then yyou can run them at less a speed but still get the same airflow.

I learned to live with the sound... its loud, and actually now I don't know if I would like complete silence...LOL I tend to fall asleep great to the white noise of the fans :)

Another thing I have done in the past which works fairly well is to get a rubbermaid container that fits your fan comfortably... cut a hole on each side for the ducting to run through, and wrap the fan up like a taco...covering 3 sides of it with old shirts or linens.. then put the top back on after connecting the ducting...I did this before and it reduced the noise by about 1/2 maybe more...

Hey Tavsvo...I feel the same way how I haven't been over to your journal in a while...but I am very happy I showed up when I did!!! Amazing grow you have going on!! such beautiful plants!

Yeah, I need to find a better one myself... I have one that has worked in my setup for years, that I got off craigslist with some of my HID lights, but everytime I go to the hydro store to get a new one, they always do exactly what you say...buzzing or humming, sometimes dont even work... My current one right now I thought I had a bad bearining in the fan (brand new) and now that you mention it..I can almost bet its the controller...

If anyone finds a good reliable brand, I would be interested in knowing... I also would love to find one that is computer controlled based on temp, where it would change fan speed based on temp, so I can keep it in a certain region...and the fans would slow at night when not needed at full.

re: Icemud's Intelligent Gro 2 LED Grow With V-Scrog - Going for 1lb & Beyond!

Search for "variac" in amazon. The 3amp version would be perfect for a fan. Sorry no temp control. I see that Titan make a day/night fan speed controller but I don't know how it works. That red variac will do the job. You can also use them to regulate the voltage on all kinds of stuff. When I get one ill use it with my dehydrator to get it to run not so hot and I can dry my buds for BHO.

Day 35 Flowering Update...

So everything has been going smoothly so far with this grow. I noticed a few of the lower fan leaves turning yellow on the Harlequin and the Black cherry cola, which at this time in flowering seems to be pretty normal from my past grows, but the girls continue to fatten up daily. The Harlequin for some reason, is not filling out as fast as it did last grow, and I am not really sure why since otherwise it looks healthy and no leaf discoloration. I am thinking it may have to do with my 12.25/11.75 flowering schedule so I reduced my daylight by 5 minutes this week and will remove 5 minutes each week until I am down to 12/12. I don't know if this is the case, but I can't seem to think of any other reason it is looking healthy, but just not filling in like last grow.

The other 2 strains look amazing and are filling in much fatter than last grow (at least it looks thaat way to me) Plenty of white pistils are still forming and it seems each day they are just getting fuller and fatter :). I'm seeking a lot of trichome development, but not as much as on other LED grows, so I am not sure as to why this is...my last grow seemed definitely more full of trichomes, but again that is just a visual observation and really can't be confirmed.

I so far am very happy with what I am seeing and I am surely hoping to hit that 1lb goal...not that I really care about yield weight, but just more as a personal accomplishment with LED...since I have hit 1LB with 1000w HID... if I can do it for about 1/2 the electric with LED, I will truely feel that LED meets my needs :)

Here are some photos for today...

Looking good, they seem to be filling out nicely.

I agree and thanks :) I looked back at my old HPS 1000w V-Scrog at the same time frame and the girth, bud development and everything looks very similar.

So far so good :)

How much water are you up to? Still doing the daily? Is it a f,w,w,w,f schedule or what? Thanks, looks incredible in there

Right now I am up to 3 cups per plant a day. I have been doing this as my feeding cycle...

1 week I start with R/O water and add cal/mag, epsom salt and other small additives. As I use the water through the week I keep adding more so it gets more dilluted each day. So by the end of the week its pretty much water.

The following week I hit them with the same process, but add organic nutrients and additives and slowly use and dillute it along the way.

The 3rd week I have been either doing a compost tea, or back to week 1...
