Icemud's Breeding Projects And Motherchucking Pollination Extravaganza

...when life hands Ya' lemons...make blueberry waffles... ;)...too bad, but sounds like the end result could be interesting...Blue Dream is one of my grandson's favorites, so I always include one in my grows the last couple years...cheerz...:high-five:...h00k...:hookah:
I'm a huge bluedream fan too... something about the smell, taste and the uppity high without the anxiety... definitely one of my favorites.... :)

definitely going to be exciting popping some of these crosses....... I will do another "official" blueberry project after the chocolate thai one is done (the 3rd round).

The blueberry smells soooo good! I instantly smelled it yesterday and knew what it was :)

I'm not one for being able to depict and describe the subtle smells of some strains, but yeah, the BD is right there in your face as clear as gas, lemon, skunk strains...I had one freebie seed from Barney's years ago...Strawberry Blue...it was straight up strawberry, and one of the best smelling plants ever...too long ago to remember the buzz tho'... :hmmmm: ...cheerz...:high-five:...h00k...:hookah:

they smell like blueberry waffles

Catching up on your journal. I see I am in time for breakfast. :snowboating:

No worries about the mix up it will make the Choco Thai project more betterer in the end. And, selfishly, I get to learn and watch as you go.
The choco Thai has me wanting it, looks delightful. even if it takes half a year before harvest......Sometimes ; - )

Welcome and happy Friday!!!

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm definitely happy with the Chocolate Thai as it is very interesting in flavor and the high is so different from anything I have had before...... I think its going to make some really nice crosses :) (in the next project when I get it right....LOL)

The blueberry is amazing smelling :) makes me want blueberry waffles :)

I will update with some photos sometime in the next few days :) Thanks for stopping by :)

Its tough sometimes to describe the strain smells (especially after sniffing that chocolate thai pollen... Ahhh Choooo!!! LOL)

I would say most strains I have had over the years all have a nice blend of terpenes but nothing distinct where I can pick it out of a group.. but there are a few strains that are so distinct, that when you smell it you know its the real deal... the ones I have come across like this are:

Blueberry/bluedream
Grandaddy Purple
Trainwreck
Christmas Bud
OG Kush (or one of the 10000s of varieties)
Cookies (or one of the 1000s of varieties)
Bubba Kush (unmistakable earthy fuel)

Most other strains I have a hard time determining what is what, but the ones above almost every time I can pick them out of a group and identify them by smell :)

My favorites being blueberry and GDP :)

Hey everyone!!! Happy Independence day weekend!!!!

Today makes day 40 of flowering (from the flip) in my Chocolate thai (now dj short blueberry) pollen chucking project.

As I mentioned before, I accidently popped some DJ short blueberry f4 beans, and the male pollinated the whole garden.... So I pulled all of the chocolate thai's out, and have them revegging in my other tent, with the exception of pheno 5 of the chocolate thai, which I had a clone of already vegging.

The DJ short blueberry f4's are both looking really good. One phenos is extremely frosty and the buds are really nice looking, but it lacks the blueberry terps. The terps are still strong on it, but they are more of a generic weed smell, nothing special. The 2nd phenotype is more leafy, frosty but not as nice as the other pheno, however I lucked out and got the blueberry syrup and waffles type smell, its absolutely amazing! From what I have gathered, its quite rare to find the blueberry terps in the seeds, so I have to consider myself very lucky on this one :) I will hopefully be re-vegging it after this project is done, but I may try to take a clone too, just to make sure I have a copy of the genetics :)

Other than that, all of the plants are seeded with blueberry f4 pollen, but I believe I also might have spread some of the chocolate thai pollen.... luckilly the blueberry pollen spread about 1-2 weeks before the chocolate thai so most of the developing seeds should be blueberry, and its very unlikely most of the chocolate thai pollen didn't hit the plants.

Well other than that, here are some pics :)

Quick update everyone.....

Today is day 71 of flowering (from the flip) in my blueberry (mix up) pollen project. I'm almost certain that all of the mature seeds will be blueberry, however there is a chance the may also be chocolate thai. I will be doing a separate project of each for correct labeling and seeds, but always nice to have extras to give out to friends and whatnot...

I pulled some seeds from 3 different plants and all 3 were tiger striped, and fully mature, so the time has come. I will be pulling all of the plants down either tonight or tomorrow for drying. I will dry them fully which may take 2 weeks as its much easier to harvest the seeds the drier the bud is.

I messed up a few feedings ago and I forgot to check ph before feeding, so my birthday cake and harlequin really got fried, but the seeds will be fine. The chocolate thai also was fairly burned but the seeds will also be fine.

Once all said and done I will post the seed harvest results.

The following project will be the chocolate thai's which are already in veg and about ready to flip. So over the next few weeks I will be cloning all of my other "mothers" and preparing for the chocolate thai breeding project.

Well I hope all is well with everyone!

Hey Everyone!!!

I hope everyone is having a great summer so far, despite all the craziness going on in the world. Without going into details as I wanna stay away from politics, I just wanna say I hope everyone is paying full attention to what is going on in the world, and not just trusting 1 news source, but doing their own research.. as things are getting pretty critical for our futures right now... I will leave it at that, but I hope everyones eyes are wide open, ears are fully attentive and you are looking past the "propaganda"... anyways... back to the journal, and I hope everyone is doing well through these rather unfortunate times....

So where are we in Icemuds pollen chucking ongoing adventure....

Well, The current seed project is finally complete and I have deseeded all of the plants, my grow tent is clean and ready to take clones this weekend to prepare for the next seed project. The seed project I just finished was supposed to be a Chocolate Thai open pollination, however I popped on accident some DJ Short blueberry seeds with the Chocolate Thais, and the blueberry were the first to show pollen, so I removed all of the chocolate thai male and females, and let the blueberry pollen fly. Unfortunately, some of the chocolate thai males had spread pollen about 1 week after the blueberry, so although I am convinced that most of the mature seeds are blueberry crosses, I can't be certain, so I labeled these accordingly as my blueberry mistake project and I will used these beans to give to friends that I know who are learning to grow, so they can have some awesome genetics to play with, and I may even pop some in the future just to have fun with.. but due to the uncertaintes I will not be breeding with these in the future and they will be more for just popping or for friends giveaways.

Overall I had 1 male blueberry and 2 female blueberries, and the female blueberries were incredible. Beautiful frosty plants, nice node spacing, great bud structure and trichomes were above average. One of the females was extremely frosty and perfect in every way, but the terps were not really strong blueberry, and more of a musky garlic armpit smell, so I didn't keep any clones of it. The other female was slightly less frosty, but had those blueberry waffel and syrup terps, and the structure was still very nice and trichomes were still really good, so I put the plant in re-veg as I will use it in the upcoming DJ Short blueberry project which will be after the current Chocolate Thai one.

So whats next.... The next project will be my "hopefully" final Chocolate Thai breeding project attempt. I already have males, I have pheno hunted females, and I will be hitting all of my "mothers" with chocolate thai pollen. Since they are in veg and about 3' tall, I will be taking clones this weekend, and then putting them into veg for 1-2 more weeks until I know all of the clones root, and then I will be flipping to flowering. This project will probably be done right around Thanksgiving, and following that I may be doing the DJ Short Blueberry project.... That is unless my state California decides to go full tyrannical with v-ax passports and mandates, in which if that happens, I won't be sticking around and will probably relocate to a more American loving state. I am hoping enough people stand against this craziness, but if not, I will not comply and will leave which may put a hold on future projects... A lot going on right now with that, so its hard to say what the immediate future holds... All I know is I want to finish my Chocolate Thai project before I make any other decisions......

If California stays as is, then I will be starting the DJ Short Blueberry seed project with the remaining beans I have (which are hard to find F4's). I also need to work on getting some "smokable flower" plants into there without getting pollen as my supply is running low and I refuse to pay "legal market" prices....

So all and all, not sure what the future holds as a lot is going on in the world, and Cali right now with everything..... but I know for sure I will at least be finishing the Choc Thais which will go into flowering in the next 2 weeks. I will take photos one they are ready :)

Well here is the current seed project harvest :) quite a nice haul for future use or gifts :)

Just a quick update! Happy holiday weekend to all!

So I have taken clones of all of my "mothers". I also took a clone of Chocolate Thai #5 which was my favorite in terms of shorter flowering, bud structure, trichomes, terps (cardboard/autumn spices/cigar tobacco) which I will use in some of the upcomming projects.

I also kept the blueberry syrup terp, blueberry plant from the last seed project and it currently is in reveg. I will be including it in the upcomming DJ short blueberry f4 seed project which will be starting soon.

I picked up some new soil for the next seed project, which will be the DJ short blueberry. Usually I use whatever the cheapest organic soil is, but this time happy frog was on sale so I picked some up. I will be mixing it with 1 bag of worm castings, as well as 1 bag of vitality soil, which is much easier on the nutrients as happy frog is kind of hot.

I will be popping seeds, once my clones root and get potted. (I need to see how much space I have to pop seeds). I may also pop an additional random seed, but it will be determined by how many free spaces I have available in the blueberry project.

I also will be including my deep chunk x GDP cross that I popped 2 cycles ago, which is absolutely amazing. The flavor is so strong and fruity and the high is a great hybrid blend of sativa awakeness and indica body.

Well other than that, now I just have to wait for the clones to root which will probably be by the end of next week at the latest.

Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Quick update:

Today makes day day 4 of flowering from the flip on the chocolate thai project. Things look good and the plants seem to be just sensing that the light is changing as I am seeing some new stretch and growth on the tops. I gave the girls their first "bloom food" feeding to help encourage the transition. Right now I am just using 300w of COB LED to flower, as electric prices are quite high as of the last few years, and since I'm making seeds and not flower for smoking, going with less wattage should be fine for the remainder of the grow. I did lower the lights to keep some solid intensity.

All of the "mothers" clones have rooted and are now in soil. I also popped 6 dj short blueberry F4 seeds. I kept the one from last run with the blueberry syrup terps. 4 of the seeds cracked within 24 hours and were placed into soil. I am awaiting 2 more to crack so I gave them a light scraping on the seams with a pocketknife to help coax them into opening and will check them over the next day. They may need a little more help, but we will see.

Well not much else to report on right now. I will take some photos of the Chocolate Thai project once things start flowering which should be in the next 2 weeks.

I also have 1 spot to put a "random" plant in my blueberry project. I have been pondering some of the beans I have and thinking about what combos' might go well. I was thinking maybe popping a white shark x aloha white widow or a CSI Pine Tar Kush (the real paki one, not xmas bud), and also have a few other things I'm considering like sundae driver (fem), or some of the creations I made. Only time will tell :)

Today is day 14 of flowering (from the flip) on my Chocolate Thai pollen chucking (breeding) project.

If you are new to my journal, these are Chocolate Thai F4 seeds that were bred by Hazeman, and originally sourced from DrawOH.

The males: 1 of the 2 males has been dropping pollen now for about a week, and the other is still forming its pollen sacks which is a little slower than usual. The male dropping the pollen is not dropping a lot but it definitely is already showing signs of the pollen being received on the females.

The females: All of the females are looking great and seemingly thriving except for pheno 6 (the long flowering sativa one from the 1st project). It just needs some TLC and it should be fine. There definitely is 2 different structures, one is more lanky sativa landracy type look with long internodes and fewer branches, and there is one that is extremely branchy (this is like pheno 6), seemingly thicker branches and seems more stable (this is what pheno 5 is). There is definitely variety in the leaves where some leaves have thicker fingers, and others have much lankier, thin sativa type leaves. Some of the fingers are more spread out, some are more together. Quite a bit of variety in the leaves, as well as structure.

Here is a quick update on my DJ Short Blueberry F4 project that is just getting started.

DJ Short Blueberry F4 Breeding Project:

Seed Source:
These were from a breeders private collection. He said they were labeled as DJ Short Blueberry F4.

Seeds Germinated: on September 13, 2021, I popped 6 DJ short blueberry seeds into a double shotglass and put them on my stove pilot light for warmth. Within 24 hours, 3 seeds cracked and were put into soil. The other 3 took a little scraping with my knife to get them to open, and all 6 eventually popped within 3 days and were put in soil.

I also popped a single Aloha White Widow x White Shark (hazemans White Tiger) a few days later, and it cracked within 24 hours and was put in soil.

As of Sept 24th, 3 of the blueberrys are popped and already growing nicely. 1 blueberry is just showing signs of popping out, and 2 others haven’t popped yet. The AWW has not popped yet either. It may be due to the soil (happy frog) which is fairly hot. I may have to pop more in a couple days in peat pods instead.

Pheno A-3: This phenotype was saved and revegged from a previous grow, in which I accidently popped 3 DJ short blueberry seeds in my chocolate thai project. I got 1 male, 2 females. A1 and A3 were the females. A3 had amazing blueberry waffle syrup terpenes so it was definitely a keeper. The buds were frosty, nice plant structure and overall the buds were good. A1, which I did not keep actually was frostier and had better bud structure, but it did not have hardly any terps, and only after drying had some blueberry terps. I kept A3 since blueberry flavor was what makes this strain such a classic. I most likely will take a clone of the revegged blueberry for the project, so it is same age as the other plants, and to prevent problems.

There are 6 total other seeds that are in the process of germinating and veg. If any fail I will be replacing them until I have 6 growing. Once I have 6 successful ones, I will then give them labels 1-6.

Quick update:

Things are going well in the Chocolate Thai project. There are 2 males in this project, one was early to release pollen and one was a taller, later pollen dropping male. Since the early pollen male already made its rounds to get the ladies preggo, I discarded this male about a week ago, to give the other male a chance to also fertilize the plants as they mature. All of the plants are showing signs of receiving the pollen and a few of the strains already are showing some nice seed production.

One of my older female chocolate thai (#6) which was the long flowering sativa dom one, showed signs of fusarium wilt from it being revegged and an overwatering, so I flushed the soil with pure r/o water and H202 (hydrogen peroxide) and then gave it a few days to recover. The fusarium crept up 3 of the main branches so I cut them off, and it slowed the wilt. One more branch curled up and died off, but the 2 main branches still are healthy. I am hoping that this pheno makes it far enough for some mature seeds as this pheno was amazing for a landrace stativa dom pheno. If not, I have more beans that later I can hunt, but would be a shame to lose this one being that its been through a lot to get here. The other pheno #5 is doing quite well (the early flowering one) and is the frostiest of the bunch and already showing some nice seed production.

As for the DJ Short blueberry f4 project, my assumption with the happy frog being too hot came true and of the 6 seeds planted, 3 are well in veg, and 3 didn't pop. So I popped 2 more and 1 of those so far has pushed through the soil. Of the original 3 vegging ones, I am culling one as it is severely defective where the leaves are all mutated and although I wouldn't mind flowering it for flower, I wont breed with it, so I am culling it to replace it with another seedling.

I took 2 clones of the re-vegged blueberry pheno (the one with the blueberry syrup terps) and put them into a humidity dome today to root. I will be popping 2-3 more seeds depending on if the other seedling pokes through the soil in the next day. I have other soil that I can use, so most likely I will either use it, or try germininating in root riot pods.

Well hope all are well! Happy growing!

Hey everyone... i hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and shared some good food, fun and family. I know with this covid crap going on, its been really rough on a lot of people the past 2 years, especially families separated by distance. I just got back from seeing my family and spending a very much needed week with them and really enjoyed my time, although it went tooo fast.

Well the Chocolate Thai project has come to an end, all of the plants, while I was gone for the week were left in the dark to dry on the stems, and I will be cutting and hanging them (if needed) to dry tomorrow, as well as de=seeding any that are ready to be harvested for seeds.

Overall the grow was a success, and while not my best effort, I can happily say that the project was a success and hopefully I will get a nice amount of chocolate thai bX crosses as well as hybrid crosses with my "mothers". The 2 phenos that were selected from the first project were the best by far, however 1 other pheno from the new batch really shined a lot too and all of them had the tobacco/cardboard/chocolate/ type smell with hints of autum spices.

I will post some photos of the final harvest when complete, but it may be a week or 2 since I may have Jury duty next week... uhhg... LOL

The next project, DJ short Blueberry is currently in veg and just about ready to flip, so after the chocolate thai project is all said and done, and the tent is clean I will be taking clones of the blueberry project, and then getthing them over to the flowering tent for flowering.

I may be reducing my "mothers" after the blueberry project, as I just have too much to deal with, and really want to start working some of the creations that I made, so I may be getting rid of a few of the "classics" that I have had for a long time. I have to make some decisions and I think I really need to reduce what I have on hand and start working some new strains into the mix... Im also thinking about a future relocation so I am also keeping that in mind in case that happens in the near future... really depends on if california continues in the destructive path it seems to be going or not..

Well that is all for now. I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving, and have a wonderful holiday/Christmas season!

Hey @Icemud

Hope things are going well. Just pulling up a seat, how's the current projects going?
Hey Rexer,

Things are going good. I just realized I haven't updated this journal in quite some time.

The chocolate thai project went very well and is finished at this time.

I just flipped my DJ short blueberry F4 project into flowering 2 days ago...

And deciding whether to do a flower run, or continue with another round of pollen chucking. I'd really like some flower to smoke (that I don't have to pay for) but also really want to do a Kush/Gas type run with chemdogs, kushes and other "gas" fuel type terps, so deciding on whats next.

Thanks for stopping by and I will try to update soon :)

Thanks for the update Icemud. Question for you, when making your crosses, how much of the males genetics pass over to the new cross?

I ask as I'll be popping some reg autos to do some crosses of my own this spring/summer. I've got my reg beans lined up, and am hoping for a male. I'll be using the pollen from the auto regs on some of my fem auto seeds, as I'm hoping to cut back on my seed costs, (and I just like the idea of trying smoking something that I've bred myself).

So far example:

Auto male Afghani x Fem Bruce Banner

With such a cross, should I expect more of the Bruce Banner characteristics, or is it a crap shoot and you just have to grow them out to see what you've got?

Thanks Icemud!

Hey everyone,

So here is a quick update on my Chocolate Thai harvest. The project turned out great, however had some late issues with nutrient lockout/overwatering that kind of browned up some of the plants leaves, so the harvest of seeds was still good, but some may not have matured as much as I would have hoped for. Either way this gave me plenty of hybrid crosses and BX seeds to work with in the future :)

I am happy this chocolate thai project is done, after 3 attempts at getting it right, getting males...etc... I am greatful to finally be on to the next project.

Well here is the harvest results :)

Hey Rexer...

Thats a great question, however I don't know how well I can answer it with accuracy as I haven't really went too deep into genetics and how they work for cannabis.

I think it goes back to those Punnett Squares I learned about back in High School many many years ago, and which traits are dominant vs recessive... but I don't even know if thats changed or not since back in the day... I wish I had more idea for ya, but I don't unfortunately.
