Icemud's Breeding Projects And Motherchucking Pollination Extravaganza

Hey Everyone... Wow time flies!!!! can't believe its already been 3 weeks since my last post... Where does time go??? wow... LOL

So today makes day 38 of flowering (from the flip to 12/12) in my Chocolate Thai project.

So far everything is looking really good and the chocolate thai's are definitely starting to fill in and thicken up. There are definitely 2 noticible variations in the phenotypes... or groups... One group is the "sativa dom" group, all 3 plants look almost identical, smell almost identical and have a very lanky slow flowering appearance. The 2nd group is more of the "hybrid" or "Mixed dom" variety and these have more of a hybrid type structure and are flowering much faster.

Since I didn't get any males off of these seeds, I reached out to the breeder and asked if he had any more after I explained the situation. He was nice enough to send me out some more CT seeds from his private stock which I am super excited about. I planted 3 of them immediately, and all 3 germinated. I will be popping more as I sort through the current flowering CT phenos and pick my best 3. I also may be getting rid of a few of my "house strains" which will also free up some space, but still a very hard decision to do since everything I have kept for years is special to me in different ways. I am determined to get a male though, or multiples, so If all else fails, it may take a few tries but I will get there!!! LOL

Phenotypes #1, #3 and #6 (sativa doms) are all very similar in height (tallest 3), bud structure is more lanky sativa type with moderate node spacing. These 3 all have very little trichome development at day 38 flowering. All 3 look like they have a long flowering time ahead of them, where many of my other hybrid and indica dom strains are already much further ahead.. I hope these aren't 14 weekers! lol I didn't quite plan for how that would work.. lol The terpene strength on all 3 of these is very weak at this point but I have a feeling it will grow in strength as these ones mature. The terpenes smell nothing like I have smelled before... zero weed smell at all. Instead they have a cardboard, chocolate, spice smell to them, almost like a fine cigar smell. Quite interesting and interesting so far.

Pheno #4, #5 and #7: (hybrid/mixed dom)
The "shorter" phenotpes 4, 5 and 7 are all about mid size plants and are slightly shorter (by about 6") than the taller phenotypes above. All of these pheno's have more variation than the 3 above, each slightly different from each other.

Phenotype #4 is probably the "sexiest" at this point as it has extremely hairy and frosty buds, much larger and denser bud formations and a very nice stacking. This phenotype looks much different from the rest and takes on a more hybrid mixed structure and definitely is much different looking than the other sativa dom phenos. This one is very interesting. This pheno also has much stronger terps than the other phenotypes, where I would rate the strength of the terps at a 6 out of 10 at this point. The smell is mostly very exotic and pleasant and is a mix of the cigar/chocolate spice, with a very sweet rich bakery spice type aroma and a hint of "weed smell". The buds on this pheno also have very curly hairy buds, much different from most strains I have grown before. Sort of reminds me of black diamond og the way it curls and is very hairy. So far, although probably not the traditional chocolate thai, this pheno is definitely very interesting and will make it to round 2 for my breeding project for sure.

Pheno 5: This pheno is also one of the mid size phenos, and definitely has more "hybrid" characteristics than the 3 sativa dom ones, but it also does seem to carry a similar sativa type structure in the buds but with tighter stacking and less height. The trichome production on this phenotype is quite good and in the top 3 at this time in flowering. The buds size on this pheno is moderate and stacking is average. The strength of the terpenes on this pheno is probably a 5 out of 10 right now. The terpenes have ZERO cannabis smell, no skunk, no kush.. and instead smell like the sativa dom ones (cigar, chocolate, cardboard with a rich spice). Quite a pleasant aroma. This pheno I may keep for round 2 as it seems like it maintains the sativa dom traits, but is flowering faster like a hybrid which I like. We will see.

Pheno 7: This phenotype is quite a nice phenotype and exhibits very nice traits so far. The height is slightly taller than 5 and 6, and the buds are filling in between 5(biggest) and 6 (average) so its right in the middle. The buds are filling in quite a bit so it definitely seems to have a faster flowering time and more "hybrid" type of structure. The trichome formation on this pheno is above average and rivals 5 and 6. The terpene strength on this pheno is probably a 6.5 out of 10 in strength. The terpenes on this phenotype are absolutely amazing and so unique. I've never smelled a strain like this before. It smells like if you mixed leather with new plastic smell and added chocolate and cardboard to it. In a way, the terpenes on this almost smell like a "manly man" type cologne. Zero dank, Zero skunk, zero cannabis smell. Very very nice terps on this strain. This one I definitely think I will be keeping for round 2 of the project.

My (GDP x Deep Chunk) *** I have not named this strain yet, but so far the way it looks and smells, it may deserve a name in the future. Wow, just wow! This strain I created in my deep chunk project and WOW! it smells fantastic. The GDP berry terps are shining through but with the pungency of deep chunk and this is a very stinky strain! In terms of terpene strength I would put it up there a 8 or 9 of 10, and this would definitely be that strain you smell in your pocket...lol Definitely a almost pure indica type look, lots of fan leaves, dense tight structure with pinecone shaped buds... I can't wait to smoke this one! I may have to re-veg it somehow as I only popped this to pollinate randomly with the chocolate thai, and being that there are no seeds this round, I really would love to run this one again. Wow!

Overall I couldn't be happier with how this grow is going and even though I wont have seeds this round, I will have plenty of flower to smoke, which I haven't actually had for a few years now (of stuff I grew) so it will be nice being able to smoke my own stuff again! sweet!!! I just hope I can get a male chocolate thai and keep these legendary genetics going :)

Chocolate Thai: Day 41 flowering (from the flip)

The CT is definitely reaching the thickening stage where the buds are starting to gain weight, fill in and swell :) I have really been monitoring my waterings this grow as I have a habitual fixation on overwatering lol.... so I have been very careful this time to give the plants sips instead of gulps and decreased the watering volume while increasing frequency :) seems the plants are thanking me for it :)

Its tough to get waterings on schedule with so many different strains all growing at once as some like to drink and some dont. It seems that my heavy indica dom plants definitely don't drink as much or as often as the hybrids and sativas, and plants from seed vs clones seem to use way more water... I wonder if it has to do with taproot vs no taproot. (clones don't have a taproot).

All of the Chocolate Thai have a very unique smell still, not much chocolate other than just hints of it, but subtle. Mostly they smell like cardboard and cigars... no weed smell at all though. Very odd.

Well there they are in all their beauty :)

Hey everyone!!!! sorry for the long delay in getting this journal going... Had my birthday right before 4/20, and then spend the next week and a half prepping my office to be moved (at work) so been extremely busy and by the time I've been getting home at night... crash!!! lol

Anyhow... lets get to bizzzznassss!!!

First up... The sour Grapes Project.

I flipped the Sour Grapes project to 12/12 on April 26th, so today would make day 4 of flowering and the girls are looking great. I gave them their first "bloom" feeding in which I did half organic bottled nutrients and half synthetic along with some cal/mag, humic acid, mycos and enzymes and PH to 6.2 approx (using the drops).

In the sour grapes project I have 7 sour grapes plants, as well as all of my "mothers" dating back to as old as 7 years ago (clones of clones of clones...etc). I will be doing an open pollen project so I will be using all the males, and keeping all the females as well, as my goal is to preserve much of the variety in these plants, as well as have a lot of variety in the progeny which is why I am using whatever males I get. (that is unless one is deformed or drastically bad for some reason or another). I haven't really seen any signs of sex yet as it seems that when I top the plants a few times its harder to determine sex until they really pop either pre flowers or preballs.

I am really excited about this project as I definitely am a huge fan of grape flavored strains and I think this will pair well with my GDP (not quite grape but more of a "purple" flavor) and my Black Cherry Soda which is also a fruit punch/grape flavor. I also think that because the sour grapes is a very frosty strain it may pair well with my trainwreck and GorillaGlew (I'm purposely misspelling it because of the glue company).

Anyhow, here are some photos of the sour grapes project. A few of the plants have saggy leaves and were watered right after taking these photos, so they perked up after the tugor pressure went up again and they were happy.

***When you are looking at these pictures... the sour grapes are to the right side of the photo.. each row is 3 plants deep, and the sour grapes are the 2 rows furthest to the right, and then the 3rd row from the right, very last plant.

they just look so amazing

Beautiful Icemud! Funny how watering doesn't get old. It's always there ready to bite us on the ass! Some are easier than others to get right I find. Strong sativa leaners go for a bumpy ride here.

Hey Twinsun, sorry to hear about your issue with your plant. I read your journal and posted my suggestions there. I hope it helps. You did an amazing job vegging your plant out, it looks fantastic. Follow those suggestions I left on your journal and I think it will fix the issue.

I will check back on your journal and hopefully we can help you get that lady into flowering.

I just thought about it, and I believe I had forgotten to mention some details over the last few weeks of flowering that I left out of the journal.... I'm not sure if I mentioned them so I will add it now...

So you may be wondering... what happened with the CS (colloidal silver) and STS (silver thiosulfate) that I had sprayed...
So, being that I didn't start spraying the STS and CS until probably week 2 of flowering (right when all the plants showed full flower), It was getting late in flowering and I wasn't seeing any sex changes in the plants. **Reminder** I sprayed a single branch on each of the 6 plants with both CS and STS. (STS has an alleged shelf life of only about 6 months or so I read) I used both because I know the CS was still good, but wasn't sure about the STS so I sprayed the STS 2x about 6 days apart and each day inbetween I sprayed the branch 1x with CS. Well it got to about week 4 of flowering or so, and I still wasn't seeing anything reverse, so I stopped the spraying, cut off the branches that I sprayed, and moved on to using stored pollen (see below). Well I left 1 branch on a single phenotype that I had sprayed just to see how long it took to turn. Well the branch did actually develop pollen sacks around day 30-35 which was quite interesting, and I noticed that a few of the other branches (the ones I cut off) had also developed pollen sacks further down the branch (so the STS or CS must somewhat be mobile in the plant, or it dripped. Since I decided this grow I would just flower out to smoke, I cut off all pollen sacks and remainging sprayed branches (you don't want to smoke any parts of the plant which was sprayed with CS or STS).

So what happened with the "stored pollen" that I tried....
So after I had realized that the CS and STS wasn't changing the plants fast enough, I figured I would try a 2nd route of getting seeds, and this was using "stored pollen" that I had taken from previous males and seed projects. After much debate, i decided to try some of the sour grapes pollen I had left over, and so I gently sprinkled some of it over a few flowers.... usually when pollenating the plants, within hours or a single day you can tell that the plant received the pollen as the white hairs will turn brown at the tips, and start curling inwards towards the calyx so you know it was pollinated. I didn't see that happen with the sour grapes pollen, so I tried sprinkling even more... and I went kind of heavy with it, pretty much dumping all of the sour grapes pollen and pollen sacks all over my plants.... waited a few days... nothing... so I determined that saving pollen in ziplock bags for over a year doesn't seem to work... lol

So after the pollen didn't work, I decided it was too late in flowering to try anything else, and didn't want to use the feminized pollen from the CS/STS as it was very late in the cycle and the likelyhood of mature seeds was not good, as well as the single Chocolate Thai pheno that had the pollen sacks was not the best one, so I didn't wanto to ruin a whole grow with pollen from a non-keeper pheno... so I will now have a lot of nug to smoke coming in the near future :) it will be nice to actually smoke my own stuff again as its been a long while :)

Anyhow, in case anyone was wondering what happened to the pollen chucking and CS/STS spraying.... thats what happened...

Day 58 flowering (from the flip)
Chocolate Thai open pollen project:

Well we are getting closer to the end of flowering and the Chocolate thai is still flowering along happily. The "hybrid" dom phenos are about where most of my strains are at, where the calyxes are swelling, the pistils are starting to fade and shrivel, and the nitrogen is starting to pull from all the leftover fan leaves.

The other 3 "sativa dom" chocolate thai's though, are still looking like they have a while to go, and probably are going to be long flowering period by the looks of it... I'm trying to figure out a way to let them run long, while harvesting the others early. I use my flowering tent to dry and usually cut down all of my plants at the same time since they all finish around 75 days on average (some are done earlier). I will most likely put some kind of light tight divider in the middle of the tent, and remove the lights from 1/2 of it. I will let the chocholate thai's continue to flower, while the others I will cut and hang in the same tent, hopefully this will work out ok... I will have to time it with the weather as this time of year our winds change by day, and it can drop to 0 RH with no notice and ruin a harvest within hours, so I will have to pay close attention to the weather as well. I hate harvestind during winters here as this shifting of the winds is normal. Summers spring and fall the RH stays right around 50% most of the time.

As far as the Chocolate Thai, the terps haven't really gotten much stronger and are pretty much the same as they have been since my last report. The buds definitely are filling in quite nicely and I will definitely have some "spears" after all said and done. I still have yet to decide which phenos I will be keeping and I think it will really depend on how they smell and smoke after harvest. (as well as a few other structural and growth related decisions).

Other than that, all of the other strains are looking near harvest and looking great and smelling even better. Its going to be nice to have some of my own stuff to smoke... Unfortunately I use salt fertz when I do breeding (its easier) so they probably wont taste as good as when I grow with a purpose for consumption, which then I usually go mostly organic/natural nutrients. It will be interesting though, and I have already started doing ligher feedings and flushing as of the last feeding. I will continue with teas and no nutrients over the next 2 weeks and then harvest time :) Maybe sooner (exept for the longer flowering sativas).

GDP x Deep Chunk: The random seed of the GDP x Deep chunk I made a few grows ago is looking spectacular, and I couldn't be happier! The GDP (berry/cherry/grape) smell along with a fuel/musty kush smell from the Deep Chunk is intoxicating and smells like a cherry cough syrup and gas... very appealing smelling :) I definitely want to try to re-veg this one and include it on the chocolate thai project next run :)

Well other than that...here are some pics :)

Well...nevermind on the pics... Seems that the 420 mag uploader is having issues... I keep uploading the photos and it keeps turning them sidways or backwards... and I am too tired to deal with it right now... so the photos are gonna have to wait until 420 figures out whats up.... anyhow have a good day everyone.. im' going to sleep! lol.

Alright, got the photos uploaded and rotated... Here they are in all their glory :)

Thanks Dr. Hook!! appreciate you stopping by! hope you have a great day!

Hi Icemud, I'll be trying growing some wedding cake in a near grow. Have you done much with it? How's it smoke?
Hey StoneOtter! Well I haven't had much experience with it, but I have grown it I think 2 cycles now. Its a pretty hardy plant, drinks a lot of water, and didn't seem to mind much while growing so its pretty easy going. The buds grow very very dense and rock hard, similar to many other "cookies" varieties. Flavor and terps are just like any other "cookies" or "cherry pie" which is kind of flavorless other than a sweet slight kushy taste, but nothing spectacular. The high is heavy and mostly indica dom.

I would say its definitely not a bad strain but nothing "exotic" either... to be honest the only reason I kept it from the last grow was because I wanted to make "chocolate cake" by crossing it with chocolate thai... otherwise I probably wouldn't have kept it as i'm not a huge fan of cookies or cherry pie crosses. When it comes to buds, I'm a terp guy so I like strong flavor and the wedding cake is kind of bland. its strong though :)

Nice! Thanks! This will be my first cookie type. One terpy cultivar to me is Lemon OG Candy if you get "the" unbelievably fast growing one. Super lemon strong terps if you're interested. I got it one of four plants and it outgrew the rest by 100%. But tasty? Oh yes!

That sounds delicious! I always did like lemon flavored strains! I have some lemon stomper seeds I have yet to pop, which is grape stomper x lemon larry. soo many strains to pop, so little time :) lol

Yea cookies is a great strain, as its fast growing, very frosty, dense nugs. I found it doesnt like topping much, and after you top it about 2x or 3x it seems to want to grow like a vine, almost like it lost which direction is up (or maybe doesn't have the strength to pick itself up). It responds much better to LST or supercropping. Something abou topping though, none of my cookies cuts liked it and needed to be supported very well.

Other than that though, its definitely an amazing strain and the high is incredibly strong. The terps to me always tasted like sweet dough with a hint of kush...

I almost forgot that I ran Cherry Pie about 6 years ago too... Wedding Cake looks a LOT like Cherry pie, almost identical pheno of birthday cake/wedding cake I have... (I have birthday cakes but I'm pretty sure its the same as wedding cake).

Here are the pics of the Cherry Pie I ran about 6 years ago. It was a beautiful strain, perfect dense nugs, but the high and terps just didn't do it for me... With Wedding Cake, the high is definitely there and its great! The flavor still is just like sweet dough. Even Cherry Pies Leaves look almost identical to wedding cake.. (this wasn't my best grow, plants leaves kind of got fried).

Journal Update announcement....

Well today, I have decided to reduce my "mothers" by 1 strain... as overall my goal was to start reducing the amount of genetics that I have been keeping for all these year....

So today, I decided that I am removing the Mendo Grape Kush from my future grows...... I really really hate removing treasured genetics as I feel like the worlds loses something... (LOL) but I know that there are still cuts of this and seeds going around so not all is lost...

I picked Mendo Grape Kush up from a local dispensary (in the prop 215 days) before dispensaries all had to become licensed and most stopped selling clones.... clones are much harder to come by now that weed went fully legal in cali... funny how that happens... (I miss the prop 215 days)... lol

Anyhow, Mendo Grape Kush I wasn't really seeking when I went for clones, but picked it up on a whim and flowered it out. (this was probably about 5 years ago). The plant was never the frostiest, or had the biggest buds, and was very very leafy, but I always liked it because the terps were quite outstanding and smelled like Mango and garlicy armpits... LOL... it had that rank odor! I also loved how easy this strain was to grow and it was happy all the time, plus it had very cool leaves which always had a "praying" type structure in veg.....

Unfortunately I have to reduce the amount of strains I keep going and so I have to be critical of what I choose. Since Mendo Grape Kush was great, but didn't have a distinct characteristic for future breeding like some of the others I have, or a rarity, its time to let it go :)

This will allow me to have room for more "seedlings" on future open pollination projects and be able to sort more female phenos (or in the case of the chocolate thai, it will give me the opportunity to get more males). As well as I won't have so many plants that I need to constantly transplant, clone and keep alive.

Luckilly I have plenty of seeds I have made from crossing other strains with it on all of my past seed projects, so its genetics will live on in the progeny on future seed poppings :)

So its the end of the run for my mendo grape kush.... sad to see it go, but its time as I need to reduce my "mothers" count.
