Far-red light as a suppressor of side shoot growth in the tomato

Abstract
Side shoot growth in the tomato was influenced by the quality of illumination received at the end of the photoperiod. Young plants receiving as little as 5 min of far-red light immediately following a 16-h photoperiod from fluorescent tubes showed almost complete side shoot suppression, whereas plants given an identical photoperiod, both in terms of daylength and photosynthetically available light energy but lacking the far-red treatment, branched profusely.
Outgrowth of the inhibited buds continued to be suppressed for periods of up to 4 weeks after the plants had ceased to receive the far-red treatment. It is suggested that this technique may be of value in commercial tomato cropping as a replacement for manual pruning.

Interesting...

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

I should have my lamps tomoz and I'll be able to show a level as such with my current run, I'm still running my 1st gen 1200 GOD and that has no IR. So I'll run my next wave of flower with same lamp but Emerson also and see the difference. I can even run a clone off a graft of a current flowering girl so should be a start. :)

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

New lights like the sun? tell me more :) PM or email is cool too if its still private info :)

Almost forgot, I'm gonna have to readup when I get em. They be a BM new development jobby :) called Budmaster "High Pressure Sunshine" These are just first run boards and they were developed specifically for some university study, so there a special blend matching sunlights spectrum as close as can be!
I'm not even sure if it's multiple indervidual clusters or a lamp lol, so im in the dark until my lights turn up :)

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

Hey Everyone,

Quick update :)

Today makes day 15 of flowering from the flip and the ladies look happy, healthy and are growing fast. They still are stretching which I expected through usually day 20-25. I haven't fed them since the last feeding so tonight I prepared a compost tea which I will be feeding to both the flowering tent and the veg tent.

I used R/O water with some moloasses, some biovam, yucca extract, alfalfa meal, kelp meal, humbolt nutrients bloom (soft rock phosphate) and some gypsum. I will let this mix bubble for the next day or 2 and should be feeding the girls when needed within the next 2 days. I also plan on giving them a nice foliar of compost tea as well, so I probably will do that tomorrow or tuesday :)

Other than that I just wanted to share some photos :)

Enjoy!

Very nice long skinny leaves, looks to be great smoke. I'm looking at your first two shots and your white light looks very close to my MH bulb that I'm finishing my grow up with now. I wonder how 4300K MH bulb , running at 1050 watts compares to yours in its white color setting.

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

Icemud & LA,

Thanks so much for the info. It looks like there's a lot of information that still needs to be found considering the IR lights we've got. For now I'm going to go ahead and hang mine on its side and angle it across the canopy. I'm going to have it come on 2 hours before lights out and turn off at 1.5 hours after lights out. I have no idea what this will do but we're all going to find out lol!

from Icemud:

"The Emerson effect is a different thing from IR being used as a flowering trigger.

The Emerson effect relates to photosynthesis. To be sort of general about it, there are 2 reaction centers involved with photosynthesis. Photosystem II (P680) and Photosystem I P700.

Photosystem I or P700 takes in electrons from IR light or light >680nm

Photosystem 2 or P680 takes in electrons from <680nm.

Emerson was experimenting with red and far red light and determined that when using both red and IR light together, photosynthesis was greater than using either IR or RED by themselves. This helped to the realization that there were 2 photosystems but also shows adding "some" IR light to the daylight is beneficial as well. Now for the Emerson effect, my question that I haven't found an answer to yet is home much IR to regular light? what ratio... and how long during the day and at what period is most effective for this? Both the GOD series light and the COB series emit IR already, so is this enough during regular daylight? or is adding more beneficial? That is what I hope to answer.

The other use for IR is as a flowering trigger, as was spoken about earlier, for using it to help convert Pfr to Pr. That also leaves some quesitons to be answered as how long to run this IR, and when should it be turned on? or should it be run all day for the emerson effect, and then also about 1 hour later than the daylight schedule for flowering trigger as well ? Hopefully we all collaboratively can answer this"

Just let me know if you think my idea is off or if I should go ahead and implement it? I never mind taking one for the team in the spirit of learning and teaching!

Thanks Guys! :circle-of-love:

Hey Everyone, Quick video update :)

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

Nice bud sites for 2 weeks with the Cobs the girls look real good :adore:

Lots of interest with the emerson effect i see, i look forwards to learning more as people progress with this.

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

Hey my friend :)

I hear your getting some BM high pressure sunlight clusters as well now, if its left me short for my DeathStar of bud build I know who to come after lol. Nah glad your getting some also as your the light tech guy, I just grow with em :)

Ye a little bit out of the blue bud ya full of surprise's :green_heart:

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

Hey guys, I did as much reading and Internet searching as possible today and have a pretty good idea how to use this "trigger light". I was able to find one grower who journaled his methods and results on RIU. He basically started it 15 minutes before lights on and shut it down 15 minutes after lights on. He did the same thing at lights off (15 minutes before and after lights off). He ran his main LED for 12 hours on/off for the first 14 days and then he switched it to 13.5 on/off until day 56. He then went back to the 12 hour schedule to mimic the length of days from spring to fall. He kept the IR light 15 minutes before and after lights on and lights off throughout the entire flower process.

He's convinced his quantity and quality both improved tremendously. He also said using this method there was almost no stretch once flower cycle was invoked.

I'm going to give this a shot once I start flowering my seedlings. :Namaste:

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

Hey Hey Hey! Exciting news! My Budmasters have arrived!!!! I will do my typical Testing and review video's this weekend, so stay tuned for all the PAR testing, noise, kill-a-watt and IR temp tests as I won't have time until this weekend to shoot and edit the videos. I will have them done though before next week :) I won't be doing an "unboxing" on these videos since I already removed them from the boxes and since they were packed like before, but better with more foam, really since my other video's already show this I probably won't include it this time in the videos...

BUT......

Before I get into revealing the new lights... I wanted to show you all how easy it was to repair the fan in my COB-4 that failed a few weeks ago. Paul at budmaster not only sent me a replacement fan but he also sent an extra just to have on hand in case anything in the future fails, which is nice! I don't expect any other fans to break, but who knows.. so its good to have the extra on hand :)

Anyhow, the Budmaster COB 4 comes apart very easily, as there are 2 screws on each of the 4 side faces holding the top of the case to the rest of the panel. These screws are easily removed with a phillips screw driver. Once removed all the wires inside are using quick disconnects and molex connectors so removal of the wires is very simple and quick and you only need to unplug 2 of the cobs and the 4 molex connectors in the middle and the top will swing open 90 degrees in a clam shell fashion. IF you wanted to you could completely remove the top if needed, but for a fan replacement, it wasn't necessary.

I like how the heatsinks even are stamped with budmaster on them! nice detail!
IMG_20160517_173620.jpg
IMG_20160517_173607.jpg

So I love the modular build of the budmasters! Each fan sits on top of the heatsink and is connected via 4 screws that are tapped into the heatsink. Again they are easily removed with a phillips screw driver. Once the 4 fan screws are removed, the fan comes right off. I popped in the new fan, tightened all 4 screws, connected all the wires and within a whole 5 minutes or less the repair of the fan was done, the light was back in the tent. :) very easy, love the modular build!

So I did find out, when unplugging the wires, make sure to take note of which color lead goes to which lead. I remember Paul had told me when assembling my COB's, he accidently reversed the wires so for the COB power, the red and black connectors, connected to the opposite color on the other side of the quick disconnect. I plugged them in and noticed the lights weren't working so I opened it back up and noticed the 2 cobs that worked, the black connected to the red, and the red connected to the black. I connected them as one normally would, like color to like color, but then I remembered Paul telling me that he accidently reversed the wires on the one he made for me, so I quickly flipped the plugs 180 degrees and re-assembled and boom! all working well! all fans working! back to the ladies the COB goes :)
IMG_20160517_181244.jpg
IMG_20160517_181259.jpg

Now while doing the repair, I did notice that the PCB board of the COB that had the fan fail was slightly browned/yellowed. I don't know how long the COB was running without the fan (before I discovered it) so I think that the heat from the cob really put some work on the PCB board, its still operational and fine, but just not as pristine white as the other 3 PCB's on the COB light. After discovering the Fan wasn't working, I turned off that side of the panel and haven't run it since, until the fan was replaced today to prevent any damage from the COB overheating. Anyhow everything looks fine and the light is all good now, just one of the PCB boards is slightly yellowed. I'm glad that everything is working fine, and a yellowed PCB is no biggy to me, as the lights are doing an amazing job in my tent and that is what matters :)

IMG_20160517_180827.jpg

And abracadabra man! This light is back in action! Thanks to Paul at Budmaster for sending the replacement fan for me!

Also If you noticed in the video yesterday or the photos below, I re-arranged the ladies in the tent to put the tallest plants together on the left side and the shorter more bushy plants on the right. I wanted to help with side lighting/penetration from the overspill on the taller plants side from the other light, as well as be able to lower the COB on the shorter plant side to get a higher PPFD to the canopy :)

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

So before I get into the reveal of the new lights, I did have some (minor) issues with the shipping company that was used this time, as it was different from the 2 previous shipments. Not a bad experience, but confusing to say the least.

Shipping:

So I do have to say, the first 2 shipments from budmaster were sent with FED-EX and arrived promptly and they billed me for the duty after I picked up the delivery, but this time the shipment was through a different carrier, through a company called DPD. (Wasn't as good of an experience) About 1 week ago I received an email from another company called Aramex Payment Services, which seemed like some scam or virus type email as I didn't recognize the sender, company and the details were very minimal (see photo) so I disregarded the email without even clicking on the link or downloading the file in fear of getting a virus on my computer.

shipping.JPG

Now when the lights were first sent out, I received an email from budmaster with a link to track my package with DPD, the shipping company, so I wasn't expecting to see an email from a company called "Aramex". The lights were shipped May 5th, and after getting 2 emails from "Aramex" with minimal description I was curious where the lights were as the tracking from DPD said It arrived in the US, but then said after that it was in "Jordan" in customs clearance, and then it was back in the UK, and then it was in the US. I was really confused as to why the light was shipped all over, back and forth, and it told me the estimated delivery date was May 12th (last thursday). So thursday morning expecting to get my package, I get a call from a guy with a very heavy accent on a phone line that was very hard to hear and he told me that I need to pay the import duties before they can pick up my package at JFK airport... I was like what? Its supposed to be here today and its still across the country in customs?

shipping2.JPG

Anyhow not a huge deal since at this point I realized that the guy who called was from a company called "Aramex" so the emails that I had received now made sense, as they were bills for the shipment. Anyhow, I made the payment for the import duty (FED EX actually billed me about a month after I picked up my package) so I expected to have to pay the duty which was about $63 bucks, no biggy. It just threw me off that they needed the payment first, and that the lights were not delivered on the day that the DPD website was suggesting. So as I am on the phone with the guy from Aramex, I made the payment and asked him if there was a way to make sure to get a signature upon delivery so that the lights weren't left outside all day while I was at work and he said this would be no problem.

Well I patiently (sort of) now was just waiting for the lights to arrive, however the tracking on the DPD website now after the payment had no estimate of when the package would get here and the guy said 5-8 business days... I didn't really care, I just wanted to know when they would arrive so that I could be there to receive them, or at least take a long lunch break and get them as I felt that somehow they would be dropped off without a signature. (FED-EX didn't do this, they left a door tag when I wasn't home, which I brought to the local fed-ex depot and picked up the lights with a signature).

So today I checked the DPD website which was not very descriptive and noticed that it now changed to "parcel on vehicle for delivery". For some reason I had a gut feeling that they didn't follow the instructions on the shipping, and just were going to leave the package at my door. So I requested from work to take off early today, and work the rest of the day from home. They were cool with it, as they understood leaving thousands of dollars of lights outside in my neighborhood is just asking for trouble so I left at lunch.... I am so glad I followed my gut instinct as I got home and the lights were delivered, sitting at my door. Whew... glad I trust my instinct :)

Anyhow, to make a long story short, I will be relaying this info to Paul so he is aware to the slight inconvenience of using DPD instead of FED-EX and hopefully he will offer both options to people. Not a huge deal, but definitely was much more confusing and complicated than using Fed-ex.

Anyhow, I felt as though this is something I should mention, as doing these testings and sponsorships, i have always been 100% honest, upfront and transparent about my experience so this is no different :) Not a big deal at all, but definitely good to know if anyone ships with DPD.

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

So first up with the new lights and surprises! The GOD-8 series light!!!!!

Originally before I received any budmaster lights, in a galaxy far far away.... I had told paul I was very interested in the GOD/COB 8 design because the long rectangular shape would fit very nicely in my grow tent. At the time he was fulfilling orders as well as working on a new case design, so he only had the COB/GOD 4's to sent, which I was more than happy to test out. Pretty much the same panels, just the GOD/COB 8 is like 2 of the 4's put together, with one less power cord needed :)

After my last grow with the GODs, for only using about 340W total for both of the GOD-4's together, the yield was really good, and the quality of the harvest was amazing, but for the size tent I have as well as the tall plants I grow I told paul I think that 1 more of the GOD-4 panels would be really ideal, even though 2 of them did alright, 3 would be more of the wattage that I think would bump up my harvest to what I am used to seeing, and help even create more dense buds.

Well he remembered my original interest in the GOD/COB 8 module design and decided to be the super awesome guy he is, and he sent me a brand new GOD 8 panel!!!! I am so happy! So what I plan on doing in the future is running the GOD 8 with one GOD 4 to make a total of 12 modules in my tent, which should eliminate any shaded areas and really pack on the punch of OSRAM SSL goodness! Thank you Paul, wife and Budmaster family!

I will be doing PAR testing, IR temp, Kill-A-Watt Draw tests and noise tests upon making my video this weekend, so stay tuned for all the stats and details on this panel.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the box to the GOD-8 is the brand new cases that Budmaster had designed. The look is pretty much the same, however the cases were laser cut this time, which made for very nice fine edges which were smooth, as well as some nice extras such as the "yield ahead" logo cut into the metal and the budmaster logo, as well as "made in the UK" by the power switch and the CE and ROHS certifications as well. Very nice touch and makes the light look awesome! The holes on the top of the panel were cut differently than the previous panels for a sleeker look and probably to help push more air at the heat sinks. I noticed that the case also seemed to be slightly thicker and more durable than the previous budmaster case, which was a plus too. Not that the other cases were bad in my opinion, but the metal definitely feels thicker and more durable now :)

IMG_20160517_182902.jpg

I believe that the lenses on these new panels are also new and improved as well, as they looked extremely clear, reflective and just beautiful! I remember Paul telling me a while back that he was thinking about improving the lenses, and so it looks like this new version 2 has the new lenses. Beautiful job!
IMG_20160517_182912.jpg
IMG_20160517_182919.jpg

Now again, I am just being super critical as any "customer" would in my reviews, so I am mentioning this just because its something that some people might frown on, and to me its not a big deal, but it is worth mentioning. I noticed a few things on the new case that didn't seem exactly right, and again, not anything but a cosmetic thing I noticed, but it looks to me like along the long side of the LED panel, the bottom case doesn't come flush with the top of the case, as it sort of bows out. Again just a cosmetic detail that I noticed but worth mentioning.

IMG_20160517_182816.jpg
IMG_20160517_182830.jpg
IMG_20160517_182902.jpg

Another cosmetic issue I noticed is that the case seemed to have a nice corner "ding" on it where it looks like it could either have been damaged in shipping, or maybe before packaging, or it could have been that Paul knew I didn't mind about cosmetic things and sent me one that wasn't "customer quality". Whatever the case there was a corner "ding" that was somehow caused during shipping or packing or something, as well as a nice dent in the face of the long side of the panel. Again, I personally don't care about cosmetic issues like this, as long as the light works I'm happy with it, but as a tester, I am obligated to be honest and transparent about every light I test, and this was something to mention. Personally I don't mind though, as I am just very extremely happy to be using Budmasters bad ass lights and happy to be sharing my Budmaster grows with all of you!

IMG_20160517_182757.jpg
IMG_20160517_184551.jpg
IMG_20160517_184556.jpg

Other than that the case is a beautiful design, the new case and lenses look amazing, and I can't wait to get this hung to do all the testing for the upcomming video, as well as get it over my girls in my seed project tent, and move the GOD 4's to my 3rd tent for now. Eventually I will be taking apart some of the panels to make 1/2 COB, 1/2 GOD panels, but that wont be for a little while until I am finished with my current flowering grow :) The modular design allows for the COB/GOD modules to be flip flopped :) which is awesome!

Overall a beautiful light, rocking OSRAM SSL chips, made in the UK and an awesome owner who stands behind his products and constantly is looking at new ideas and innovations!

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

So onwards to the long awaited, highly anticipated, Budmaster Emerson LED grow light? or should I say bloom booster...well. yall get the point! haha :)

I have been very very excited to try out these Emerson panels which use Osram SSL 730nm IR chips in them. There actually is 2 uses which these can be used for, 1) the emerson effect and 2) photoperiod manipulation and flower triggering. I am excited to try both of them, but for now I think i will just add them to my current grow (flowering tent to see how they perform). I haven't yet decided on how I am going to use them, whether running them during all day daylight for the emerson effect, or if I will just use them for flower triggering, but I will make up my mind by this weekend after I shoot the testing video.

Again, I have to say I am very impressed with the new cases, Great job Budmaster! They are beautiful! The emerson panel is a 2 module panel and only has IR chips. From what I read a little IR goes a long way, so the goal with this light will be to mount it in the corner of my tent, angled across the full canopy. It will be interesting how I come up with this for mounting it, but I'm sure my innovative mind and a fresh packed bowl of tangie will help me figure it out ) haha :)

So the Emerson panel also has the budmaster Logo laser cut into the panel, as well as the brand "budmaster" on the bottom surface of the panel. It also has "made in the UK" and the certifications "CE" and "ROHS" cut into the case. Beautiful design!

So the lenses again look like they are the new ones that paul had told me about as they are extremely clear and really nice looking, and the whole panel in general is just beautiful. :)

I definitely can't wait to put this into use and see how things go with the added IR. :)

Re: Icemud LED Grow Featuring The All New Budmaster COB Technology - White Full Spect

So impressive! :bravo:One of these days.....:circle-of-love:

There has been scams going on with other LED companies. Check this out:
https://www.420magazine.com/community/threads/mars-hydro-led-grow-light-discussion-1266.190983/post-2902801

Wow, thats crazy, but its good it was brought up in the forums and that both the company and consumer are now informed. Yea I don't really even open any emails that I don't recognize the sender, too many malicious softwares, scams and other things on email. I've been reading about the new ransomware that is causing quite a few issues all over, where it will encrypt your whole hard drive and then force the user to pay for the unlock code... pretty crappy!

I back all my important stuff up on a usb hard drive, and have my OS on a separate flash drive, and the rest of my files on a HDD internal on my computer, so if something were to happen, I probably could just wipe my OS and re install :)

Its crazy to see how many ways that people all over will try to scam others. Its sad. I have been thinking lately to myself, is the world getting worse, or am I just getting more wise to the truth, and its always been crooked and cruel. I think the latter is probably true, but it just sad to see how we lose out on so much by having to have our guards up 24/7.

Hey Light Addict! I got mine today, as you probably noticed :) Man I am excited to experiment with the emerson panel! I want to add it to the current COB grow immediately, but also want to see how the COB's do by themselves without it since this is the first full run with them. I may start off in my seed tent with it but still not 100% decided yet. I may just put it in with the cobs and see what happens :) lol

I'm excited to see everyone trying out these Emerson Panels in different ways :) Hopefully in the near future I can try maybe a side by side, with and without it with the same plants in same soil, to see what it does and how it effects them, I have some space blankets *mylar I can tape up to separate them :) It will have to wait until after my seed project and current flowering are done but will be fun to try :) so many tests and trials to do :)

Also with my current work I will be helping test about 8 different versions of LED's we built and modified slightly to see which works best. Different design than most LED growers use since these will be for a vertical farm and so the build is much different, but excited to test different white color temps, as well as intensities to see which is best. A whole bunch of testing to do both at home and work : )

Interesting :) sounds awesome! I know Paul always has some new projects and ideas he is working on, even with his quantum dot technology, way ahead of any other lighting company in the industry :) Can't wait to get the details on the High Pressure Sunshines!
