Yo Ice,
I enjoyed reading the origin of your name. I am a old hip hop head from the boogie down. Did you produce tracks using mpc's?
Looking great, that COB light is killing it
Cool, whatever they are their killing it.Hey Millertm I'm really loving the budmasters so far the photos above are the GOD panel though, but the COB's (white) are really doing an amazing job too Thanks for the compliments
No kidding, thats whats up I did pretty much every aspect of music production, except for actually producing beats and dj'ing, but I did over my time produce about maybe 100 beats or so.. I mainly used software based sampling, and midi virtual instruments and loved my Emu-mp7 which was a sequencer with pads like a MPC. I've used MPC's but didn't own one so I never really used it a ton, but still love how drum samples really punch on a beat made with a MPC. I mainly was a recording/mixing and mastering engineer, and 2nd a lyricist, writer, rapper/performer... and then also did all the other things along the line like artist development, marketing, advertising, merchandice manufacturing like tshirt screenprinting, label making, and such, as well as artist management, live sound mixing, photography and video shooting, and a little editing and graphic design. Pretty much anything involved in music production, promotion, management and running a record label I participated in... for some reason though I never did much producing as it wasn't my strongest point, and dj'ing, which I now kick myself for since I have had hundreds of people that wanted me to dj their partys, shows, events.. I did a couple parties and underground poker tournements as the dj, but it just never was my thing.. I was more the one with the creative touch to projects to make them special like an executive producer, as well as the ear behind the mixes and final products.
Music is what brought me to cali in the first place. I had an artist I was working with in the chicago area who got signed to a label in orange county which was owned by a bunch of past star rappers and industry people. So the artist I was working with said I'm only going to cali if my engineer comes too, and so he asked me and I said yep... lets ride...
He was out there a few months before I came out and I flew out to check it all out before making the drive, everything was legit so I packed up my nice mercury sable with my belongings and music gear, and drove out to cali from IL by myself with just $500 in my pocket and nothing in the bank.. I was on a make it or break it mission
So I arrive with a car full of stuff, hardly any money and no place to even stay.. I figured oh well, I will make it happen.. So I was lucky that one of the guys that owned the label had an office in a strip mall he didn't use and said that I could sleep there till I figure things out which was nice.. the only thing was the bathroom was a public one outside of the office and got locked at night... so I became really good with a credit card in the door jam to break into the bathroom at night.. boy was that a not fun experience when nature was yelling lol
I was in heaven, Cali, free, doing music which is one of my passions and just loving life. I stil to this day can remember the first morning waking up in the office like...where the heck am I... oh yea.. and then opening the door and smelling the saline air from the ocean breeze, feeling the sunshine and being so energized to get things moving... That memory I hope never leaves me because it was such a liberating and free feeling to just have no plan, no worries and just to do what I love... and not be tied down by rent, bills, or anything other than food and thats it. I showered every day at a friends house in town, or used a local gym shower for a few months, which worked ok with me, and then just went to the studio, morning to night...
The next 2 years moved so quick for me as every day was packed with trips to and from LA, or music venues, shaking hands with literally hundreds of famous and well known industry people, being introduced as a professional with other professionals which felt really good and just life was amazing at this point... I worked with tons of popular artists and pretty much did everything I could to help launch the labels first few artists. I even back when myspace was popular had a few pages, one for my studio, one for my personal music and one for label artists and even managed to catch the attention of an A/R at Capitol records to met with me in some mansion in the hills of hollywood near the capitol building to talk about possibly signing me to the label.. I was so gassed up over all the stuff I was already doing I declined their offer to further conversation in regards to me being an artist since all the glamor and glitz and exclusiveness I already was involved with, I didn't want to sign any dotted lines and be a industry puppet... I still to this day wonder what would have happened if I did further talks with them, but I think I made the right choice
Things were great for a while until money ran low in the label and too many owners were trying to get involved and so direction was constantly changed and over a few years things fell apart. My reality of life hit me that even though I love music, I also needed more income and something which was steady so I put music to the side and started the career life of sales... well actually went back to it...
So thats my music story and how I got to Cali, and I fell in love with just about every aspect of it, except for the extremely high prices of living, and the job situation... I still dabble with music and recently met a co worker who was famous back in the early 90s and signed with Eazy-E and priority records, and we have become really good friends.. so me and him recently recorded a nice chill weed smoking song which I rapped on, and I just recently wrote a very deep song about violence in todays society and how the children need to have better, but have not officially recorded it yet, since my studio needs a new interface... my old one is amazing as far as conversion and S/N but doesn't work with modern windows... otherwise I probably would still be recording more often.. the new interface I want is about $2500 and even though I want it, its more of a hobby and not a necessity at this time so I will have to wait until its within budget again.
Hi Ice,
Ladies are looking lovely as ever. Sorry to hear about your job. I'm in the same place. I had to have spinal surgery with a 6 month recovery and they let me go. People like us always land on our feet!
Looks Great as Always Brotha

I admire your hustle and knowledge.
I had an EMU mp7 also! Purple with pads and knobs. I loved that thing.
The sounds were dope and we're used in many rap music tracks. You have all the skills to pay the bills and I love your style of writing. I started DJ ing back in 1977
and bought my 1st set of turntables and mixer on 78. Grew up in the BX and Harlem and was in the cradle of the birthplace of hip hop when it was mostly done in the park. My 1st piece of music production gear was the EMU mp7 then I finally got an mpc. Still make beats when the spirit hits me on my akai mpc renaissance. Sample based chops and loops. As a dj I developed and ear for dope samples. I love vst instruments too.
Ice i apologize for hijacking your journal but dude ..you started it!

I always perk up when I hear lime. I associate it with a full, comfortable, soaring ride. And pepper is my second favorite. Very nice!
[Edit] Key lime pie, right?
