How To Make Concentrated Cannabis Oil

Hi WJ, thanks for your service. FYI, I typically only make oil with 2 ounces of material at a time and it has been just fine that way for us and like motoco have no experience with the paste but hopefully it helps to know that you don't need a pound to get started.

Thanks budnoob2. I was really discouraged that I would have to have a pound to make some medicine. How long does oil from 2 ounces of material last with the amount normally taken/tacked in the beginning? Does yours last two months or longer? Takes me about 10 weeks total to grow, dry and cure. When one makes oil, does it have to be cured? All it says on anything I have read is dried. That would take a couple weeks from my total time. A good thing if it is just dry.
Thanks so much for your reply to my post. The more I hear from knowledgeable people, the easier it is for my brain to understand what I am "in for" making this medicine. My wife and I are very excited.

I have done 1/2 oz at a time and we are still using it at 2 wks. Looks like we will get another 4 days or so out of it.

no scan ordered today!!!!

Is the everclear any cheaper where you are?? I am paying $28.00 for a 1.75L bottle of the everclear. Maybe I could become a bootlegger. LOL

Morning budnoob2,
In the short time I've been using Spirytus grain alcohol I love the ease of use, the ease of evaporation during decarboxylation process. Not to mention I know the safety factor especially for first time users. Price? I just bought 24 750ml bottles for 628.00-ouch! Hopefully that will be enough to process a lb. of Ghost OG (24.8%THC), 2 oz of Harlequin (pain/inflammation) and 2 oz of Blackberry (sleep and appetite increase). Late stage chemo/radiation failed, hence, this med package.

Thanks again Brother!

Boy that sounds great. I have two weeks to go back to the docs.
Even 1/2 oz works? This is sounding better every day. I do believe I found a good place and good people. I hear Buffet in the back of my head... I have found me a home.

Wildjim. I am glad you found your way here also. I remember how excited I got when I found these threads. It is already paying off in 2 short weeks. And Yep I only cooked 1/2 oz. Since it was my first time to cook the oil, I did not want to make a mistake on a bigger batch. Also since my husband was starting the oil for the first time, we started with only 1 grain rice size a day split into 2 doses. So of course as we work up to his needed amount it will take a whole lot more. I am also on my first grow and will not get to harvest for 5 or 6 more weeks. I don't know yet how long this strain will take as it is a mystery seed so she has the name I gave her which is Lilly. Like you, I have done some bad things to Lilly since she was only a seed but she is a real trooper and hung in there for me while I learned. All her baby clones are doing wonderful!! My husband got to test one of her buds and he loved it. It was a clone that I put immediately into 12/12 to sex Lilly, so she was about 4 inches tall with 2 small buds when I accidentally dropped her on her head/bud and she broke. I didn't think it would be very strong yet but he said it was and he loved the flavor. I told him forget about smoking it, I am going to make it all the oil I can and bath him in it. lol

Oh and for your question of if the flowers need to be cured. Motoco answered that for us a few posts back. It is a nice detailed answer. What I do remember was the bottom line was that it needed to be dried and cured to the point that the stem breaks/snaps cleanly. He likes a longer curing process as it can increase potency but in our case where we don't have the time to wait, I believe he said about 2 wks after harvest and the stem snaps cleanly. Then to make sure there is no more moisture left in your flowers before you freeze it spread them out on a cookie sheet for a couple of hours and keep them covered also. I'm sure Motoco will let you know if I got any of this wrong. :-) Hope this helps

Sorry for the delay, catching up now. wildjim, I am still using close to a gram a day until I get the all clear so I go through quite a bit and still need to supplement through purchasing since I don't grow enough myself yet; however, in the beginning and for maintenance doses typically 2-3 grains of rice worth is all that's required. I've never closely monitored the time to use it because I'm always just added more as I run low but I'd guesstimate 1 gram lasts about 7-10 days at this volume and I've typically gotten 2-4 grams per ounce depending upon strain and quality. For drying and curing I use a hanger to dry (IKEA has those things you hang from ceiling that you can put stuffed toys in). I line the bottom of each level of the hanger with paper bag and lay the buds out in a dark room with no more than 50% RH for 4-6 days (once the stems are firm and breakable and not just flexible), then I put the in a canning jar for a minimum of 1 week with a 62% Boveda pack to cure a little for making oil (I wouldn't smoke without a minimum of 4 weeks cure but that's my preference). As far as cost for the carrier, I can get Spirytus for $20 per 750/ml (sorry you got gouged so bad Motoco) or Everclear for $22 per 750/ml and I prefer Spirytus anyway so it works out that it's slightly cheaper here. I also prefer the fondue maker for the first stage of evaporation as I have more control over temps. For the decarb I just use the sauce pan with olive oil and a 12oz. stainless steel coffee frothing cup which is a little tougher to get oil out of but just happened to be what I have handy and it works for me so I've stuck with it.

I meant an induction approved pan, its got the little logo on the pan. Pretty much if its magnetic. A 2 quart. sauce pan would be perfect and if you can get one with the little spout on the side even better.

Do you mean an induction approved pan or something else? I am ordering a set of pans in the next couple days. Besides ferrous metal base what do you suggest. Any certain size?
Thanks!

I can get spirytus for 19.00-20.00 per 750ml. Its an hour away at the beach, but traffic can take 3-4 hrs round trip. Locally I can order it but its a smaller volume store and they know the only peeps that get it is using it for extracts. So depending on how much I need at the time determines where I order it from calculating cost of gas and time. Of course their are cheaper carriers but I really like Spirytus just because its 192 proof instead of 190 Everclear. A tad better pulling power and less water. An extra rinse gets the job done the same as ISO 99.8% without the caustic fumes.

I don't know how much I'll have from this grow I am doing, but whatever it is, I'm going to try making the oil.

They don't sell Everclear in my state any longer. And I haven't been able to check for the Spirytus grain alcohol, being a non-driver makes things difficult and take longer. I still have about three weeks until I am ready to try so I will check the local liquor stores during that time.

Sorry about your accident with Lilly. But at least your husband got to try her, er "sample" her.

Thanks and hope to have more enjoyable talks in the future. Give my best to your husband. And to you.

You can distill easily and to a higher percentage than 192 proof. I just haven't had time to do everything. Growing, making concentrate and patient load is at max capacity right now. Soon enough I will have everything in house. Its definitely on my list of things to do. Then add other projects I'm working on, while working through circulation issues I can only say 'god bless' the daytime concentrate to help me through the day.

An off topic to this is concurring with budnoob; the Cuisinart Fondue Cooker is hands down the best cooker in my opinion out on the market. It excels in temperature control which cuts the process down time wise. Also doubles as an excellent double boiler which is much more efficient than the oven decarb (again, just my thoughts). The little cooker that could :) Look around, I've seen new ones that have never been used for cheap. Just need mitts for the SS handles and in my case a 3ft power strip (GE for 9 bucks). Also just because of its small size don't be fooled, this can easily down a pound of herb.

Thanks for the info. Really helpful in my planning for operation Oil Maker. It must be nice to be in an area that allows you to buy what you need. Unhappily it isn't an option for me. That's why I am soo happy a a couple ounces at a time will work. That has certainly taken that weight off my back. I have a couple weeks and I do want to get it right. And with the help and compassion I am getting here, it seems pleasurable to have to go through this. I know how crazy that sounds, but I am getting to feel a happiness I haven't felt in a long while.

With thanks to you and everyone I have met here. :circle-of-love:

Jimbo, for 1st time, I would recommend using only 1 oz of bud.
That's manageable & fairly quick. Decarbox'g is easier.
Decarb w/ equipment suggested by Motoco. He's meticulously tried to make this as painless, safe & straightforward as possible with sharing his research/methods.
I'm renaming MY oil: "Moto-Oil". Short for Motoco Oil.
Just listing the equipment, saves ppl SO much time.

That's great Cajun, I think I'll have 1 oz from my grow. Hopefully more, but whatever Ja gives I'll take. Just had to replace my Heat Pump, over $10k, and it took all my non-essential spendable funds for a while. Can't afford any purchases in the near future, so says the boss, my lovely wife. And she knows the household finances. Still have to buy the "carrier". They no longer sell Everclear in my state. I don't know about Spirytus, yet. Saturday I will know and buy if they have it.

I am feeling so much better mentally. Thanks for steering me this way!

Cannafan I store mine in a semi cool area in the dark. I have mine in 1 gram syringes with caps. With what I have read it should last upwards to 3 years or longer. Mine is around a year old and if I don't tack right I definitely get stoned.

Thanks Beemerbill! I'm making more this weekend, so I will have a good supply of it. I don't want it to go bad on me. That's a great shelf life.

I'm similar to beemer on this, store my oil in capped 10ml syringes in cool dark and relatively dry location. Have never had any long enough to know when/if it will go bad.
