Horse's Crawlspace Grow

Penetration. That's the deal with lights: lush on top, withered down below.

Ha, so not much has happened, other than a bunch of yellowing leaves, since the girls jump from soil to hempy.

I do think the Superthrive stabilized them, but it was a lot more traumatic than I originally thought. They still haven't hit the rez, and it's been more than a week.

I did put some Osmocoat in the watering spot a couple of days ago.

I pHed the last watering to 5.4... the runoff was 6.2. I'm open for any tips on anything that will flatten my learning curve!

The runt. I may have put her out to pasture because it's lookin' like the tent might a bit crowded.

I wove up a ScroG screen ala Papa Green's clothesline tip. I'm hoping the plastic holds up under the HPS.

DSC077062.jpg

I also got some black plastic under the tent flaps and inside for lightless passive air intake. The blackout is working, but I haven't got the exhaust fan yet, so I'm not sure if there will be enough intake.

I should get the fan this week, so I hope I'll be taking the tent for a test drive... don't change that dial :ganjamon:

Re: Horse's Crawlspace Grow.

let's see if we can solve this problem:

1.)where are you watering?
2.)How often are you watering?
3.)How much runoff are you getting?
4.)Where is the hole in the bucket?
5.)what are you feeding them?

What it looks like to me is that they aren't getting enough food. Also, when you are first establishing the hempy....you've got to water 2 or 3 times a day right around the base of the plant until the roots hit bottom. You'll know it when they do!

Mix up a good nutrient solution, not too strong, and water around the base of the plant several times day until you see the unmistakeable signs of the roots hitting bottom.

you've got the feed hempys.....the medium is totally inert.

Re: Horse's Crawlspace Grow.

simple. since you went to hydro/soiless your plants need nitrogen and calcium. Cal mag+ by botanicare is a good one, but I guarentee that your plants will look better after a week of even 2ml per gallon of calmag. botanicares calmag+ is calium nitrate, and your plants will absorb and divide into calcium and nitrogen. feeding botht the things that are lacking.

sorry for the typo's but Im in the zone and it doesn't include typing errors.

later,
jason

Re: Horse's Crawlspace Grow.

also, calcium and nitrogen are easily absorbed by the medium in which case it is needed to exceed the mediums absorption quantity for the first couple weeks to level it off, and then back off a touch with these calcium additives. also note that most organic calcium suppliments will lack the nitrogen since they are mostly derived from calcium x carbon molecules umungst others.

anyways..............get some. it'll help or I'm not

Ok Doc,

1.)where are you watering? In one spot opposite the drain hole. I'll change that to the root ball until I see some vertical growth?

2.)How often are you watering? Every 2 or 3 days. I'll be changing that, also.

3.)How much runoff are you getting? About 90% of what I am putting in.

4.)Where is the hole in the bucket? 2" from the bottom of a Trader Joe's rose pot that holds approximately 2 3/4gal of water when empty.

5.)what are you feeding them? 1 tsp of Osmocoat + in the very bottom of the pot, and another teaspoon under the watering spot. I now know the O+ should have gone 2" from the bottom, and a few inches from the top. Since I was pretty light on the O+ do you think that will be a problem?

I haven't given any other nutes, so I think you're right about the food, or lack thereof.

I have FF Big Bloom and Grow Big. I'm reading that I should give 1/4 dose of both? How much solution at a time with the 2-3 times a day regime?

And, should I be shooting for a runoff pH of 5.2?

A curious thing is that some of these plants (strain unknown, but I'm seeing a sativa/indica) are stacking at the bottom... well, at least that's curious to me. <G>

Thanks for the consultation, can I pay you in credits??? :thankyou:

High JasonLee,

Here's the ting, mon... I'm using well water. It's hard enough that we have to soften it for house use or it turns my delicates brown, leaves rings in the wc, and generally wreaks havoc with anything it touches. I can't find the last analysis, of course, but I'm pretty sure there's plenty of cal/mag/fe/manganese/and about any other mineral in that stuff.

I'm watering the girls with unfiltered, unsoftened straight from the well joy juice. Could there be too much of anything? I think I'm not giving them nearly enough with my stingy watering schedule, and that you're right about the cal/mag shortage.

I need to find that pH chart floating around here to see if I'm locking something necessary out with the pH.

Thanks doode, you guys are going to teach me this stuff in spite of myself!

:thankyou:

My answers in red

Ok Doc,

1.)where are you watering? In one spot opposite the drain hole. I'll change that to the root ball until I see some vertical growth? Yep. Water everywhere until you see the obvious sign that you hit bottom.

2.)How often are you watering? Every 2 or 3 days. I'll be changing that, also.
2-3 times per day until they hit bottom.

3.)How much runoff are you getting? About 90% of what I am putting in.
Shoot for 30% runoff.

4.)Where is the hole in the bucket? 2" from the bottom of a Trader Joe's rose pot that holds approximately 2 3/4gal of water when empty. Perfect! :smokin:

5.)what are you feeding them? 1 tsp of Osmocoat + in the very bottom of the pot, and another teaspoon under the watering spot. I now know the O+ should have gone 2" from the bottom, and a few inches from the top. Since I was pretty light on the O+ do you think that will be a problem?
There's no need to go light on OC....it won't burn the plants. I think you should add a bit more.

I haven't given any other nutes, so I think you're right about the food, or lack thereof.

I have FF Big Bloom and Grow Big. I'm reading that I should give 1/4 dose of both? How much solution at a time with the 2-3 times a day regime?

yep. If your OC is on the bottom, and the roots aren't, they aren't getting much food. Some, but not enough. Go ahead and feed them some Grow until they make it.

And, should I be shooting for a runoff pH of 5.2?
No....that's way to acidic. PH the nutrient solution to 5.8ish.....make sure your meter is accurate. Don't worry about the runoff pH. Things will be fine.

A curious thing is that some of these plants (strain unknown, but I'm seeing a sativa/indica) are stacking at the bottom... well, at least that's curious to me. <G>

You're gonna be just fine, bro. I put sick plants into hempy to get them well....works every time, the roots love it. But, you gotta feed 'em!

I'm leaving for a week....take pics....I can't wait to see how you're doing then. You'll be amazed!

(I hope my auto watering system works)

ARe your other plants dying? Do you have a lawn....shrubs?

Your water is probably just fine....just change your habits for a couple, three days and you'll be fine. Osmocote is full of chelated minerals....they absorb at any pH.

Re: Horse's Crawlspace Grow.

You guys are my girls good surrogate parents!

And, yeah, the lawn is dying... but it's cause I'm too lazy to water LOL. Tomatoes are boomin', tho!

:laughtwo: That's funny.

OK....with regard to the tomatos....are you pHing the water? Testing the runoff? Hmmm?
I've never pH'd water in the vegetable garden, and they're boomin' I do water liberally, but I've never checked the runoff.

If the tomatos are boomin' there is no reason whatsoever the MJ shouldn't be. Your water is fine.

Just go back to basics....water, feed, environment. The ancient laws of nature will do the rest.

Oh yeah, these plants are tough and resilient. They'll bounce back.

I've never pHed anything in the garden either. We do make our maters watch "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" when they're lookin' punky. Maybe a screening of "Reefer Madness" in the gro room?

Have a good vaca :grinjoint:

Interesting....and yet any time there's a problem "we" cannabis growers blame it on pH and then start flushing.

Do you flush your tomatos? I don't. How do yours taste?

You see where I'm going with this...if you can grow tomatos, you can grow MJ. Feed 'em, water 'em, give good air and balmy temps......let nature do the rest.

I know I'm obsessing on the pH... is there a topical ointment for that?

I hear what you're saying... but since I took the dirt out, there is nothing natural in my crawl space LOL

On top of that, we garden in raised beds, which inadvertently get flushed everytime we forget to turn the soaker hose off. :grinjoint:

I really am going to forget about the pH tho. I just tried to lemon juice 4 gallons of water. 4ml lowered the pH .1 to 5.9. 12ml (in 4ml shots) later it was still 5.9... fuggit, I'm going to start mixing the girls gin and tonics instead, ha.

:peace:

Re: Horse's Crawlspace Grow.

hahahaha, If your mixing gin and tonics make one for mee too!!! I'll be there, but if it takes me a while just throw it in the fridge to keep it cool.

I know you said that your done obsessing over pH, but you wanted a chart, so here you go. generally for hydro 5.8-6.8 is good. I try to keep mine right around 6.o personally, but it's just my thing. lol ...and Hmmm...if your pH is too low it would make Nitrogen and other nutrients unavailable for the girls......well......just look and see...

Hope this helps man.

Thanks Jason, that's exactly what I was looking for.

I lied about not obsessing over the pH, I wanted DocBud to rest easy on his vacation:cool:

I'm pretty persistent, too... I got the pH down to 5.8 this morning. Vinegar is not just for BBQ sauce :grinjoint:

It's 5:14PM here, your gin and tonic kinda got drunk... you'll have to settle for a fresh one. Okay?

Re: Horse's Crawlspace Grow.

no problem man, I can wait. One of the learned traits of a gardener. lol

Just be weary of the vinegar, ok? It had a tenancy to drift back up rather quickly for me. Pain in the ass. I'd recommend store bought pH up and down if possible.
I know how it is to be on a budget though, I'm sure that the vinegar will work well enough to get you thrue this time. ;) :headbang: Rock on buddy.

That's good to know about the vinegar. I did try some pH 4.01 buffering solution. Is that the same thing as pH down? It would be a budget breaker by the end of a gro, tho!

Tell you what, I'll keep your glasss cold :grinjoint:

Re: Horse's Crawlspace Grow.

Excellent journal, I'm really interested in SCROG for my next grow so I'll be watching you closely. Cheers!

Thanks for crawling in GrowingGirls. Stick around and you'll learn all sorts of things not to do

I just checked out your grow... looks like we may have similar subterranean conditions!

pH buffering solution is used for calibrating pH testing pens. It does not change the pH of your water. it is simple distilled water set at that pH.

The pH up and down will. Down is usualy Phosphorus Acid, but can vary. you can get a pint for around $6.95 from your local grow shop. I prefer 'Pro pH' Brand.

GL man!
