Hempy Headquarters

Tead's a baby-back kinda guy... 2 racks, one just layin on the other a bit.
After that shot, I tried to scoot one of the racks over to another plate.... it fell apart during the slide.
It's to get a good set of them out. I do it all very manually sometimes using my alarm thru the night. 12hrs works, but 24 is mo bettah! Hard to manage a pile of smoldering wood for 24... I usually settle for 12.

I dry around the hole and put a piece of duct tape over the hole and put them back in the tent. Bear in mind the overflow still coming out is in the form of drips at the time I put the tape over the hole.

Is there any proven reason why this would be detrimental to the overall health of the plant

As in all things, "YMMV" applies - but the reason I don't like to tape over holes... is that I'm a bit of a klutz. If you aren't, if your containers are better constructed than some of the ones I use (or at least heavier), or your tape isn't as sticky as mine... then this probably wouldn't be a concern.

I've been known to make messes. Pull tape. Pull tape harder. Get frustrated, yank really hard on tape... go get the broom  .

Other than that, though, I do not recall anyone ever posting that the adhesive on the little bit of area that's covering the hole reacting in any way with the nutrients, substrate, or plant's roots.

I assume you aren't real concerned about it (I'm not). If that ever changes, you could always use a small piece of something that you'd consider less "reactive" to cover the part of the tape that actually comes in contact with the hole, I suppose. Seems like a PITA kind of thing, though.

What about a small rubber plug or maybe a golf tee?

I like your rubber plug idea. The real hardware store that used to exist in this town sold many sizes of them. They also sold many sizes of corks (from almost as small as the diameter of a pencil "lead" up to well over an inch).

Hmmmm..... I'd think he's talking about me, but TS has been afoot.... Tead suspects otherwise.

Lol. Still recovering from the shoulder injury, have even more time than usual to... sit here :( .

I've tried monitoring runoff. Never have I been able to get any meaningful info this way. I know it seems like it would be easy... but it's never worked out for me.

Well, with an inert media you don't have to worry about testing that over time (no slurry-test).

Here's a thought: Blame it on your success ;) . Aside from your "too-tall" experiment, it looks like your plants generally do quite well. Monitoring might be of somewhat more use if a person's results are more variable? Even if they do not understand the results... They can sort of develop a baseline. Then if there is suddenly a marked difference, this might help with troubleshooting an issue - or even, possibly, in realizing that they are about to see symptoms of one.

IDK. I'm a lazy gardener, too, lol. I'll go ahead and admit that this just might be one of those "do as I say, not as I do" things  (hey, did we gain or lose an animated smiley? That one is on the right now and the other day it was on the left of the second row. Maybe I changed my screen zooming settings, IDK. I'll go back to typing in the code by hand...) . But I still do spot-checks; just not as often or as regularly as I should. Checking after the (visual) appearance of issues has often showed "screwed-up" numbers, though, leaving me to think, "If only I hadn't been lazy on this."

Keep in mind that I got most of my useful cannabis-growing experience with DWC, so I had a... (words are difficult today). Anyway, I used to have a simple little chart (and I used to have it memorized  ). All it was, was... AHA! Found it. This version was uploaded to the forum by Rifleman, and is more complete. The other one I have (somewhere?) was much shorter, but it also had an entry that mentioned microbial life in the reservoir as a possibility, which this chart seems to lack. I'm not sure what the "note #" referenced are.

Well... pig

Ah. With pig, yeah, burn mine all the way through. Got to kill the parasites, ya know.

not human... but the same process on very similar meat.

Err... I'm pretty off-the-wall at times, and even I don't know how to respond to that one, lol.

we might offer up some crawfish now and then

I was talked into eating one of those when I was, IDK, seven years old? We call them crawdads around here, and I don't remember anything specific about the experience - other than the fact that it was just scooped right up out of the creek and handed to me. No, it did not go well and, NO, I didn't finish it (or even swallow).

but we generally like to stay with the more traditional ingredients.

I thought that crawfish WAS a traditional ingredient in Cajun cuisine.

A dark human might wonder if we could tell the difference if presented side by side after a day in the smoker.

From everything I've read... IDK whether or not you'd notice the difference in the smoker, but you probably wouldn't after each had been plated up. At least not if the meat were removed from the bones and used in some sort of dish. NO, that's not personal experience talking. They do seem to smell comparable when in the fire.

I never thought I'd be typing this, but this discussion has become a bit more macabre than I'm comfortable with, lol.

Don't eat people! Aside from the whole moral question (which I thought was shaky ground, really, unless the cook/consumer did the killin', since a corpse probably doesn't care all that much what happens to it), it probably isn't healthy. And remember, bonobos are people too, lol, so keep them off the menu as well. Bird... Well, if a person gets hungry enough, I suppose. If it smells like cat food, leave it for the cats. It a cat won't eat it, you shouldn't either. If the company that produces the thing has to put the words "food product" right there on the label so that a person can tell that it is, don't eat that either (so potted meat "food" product is off the menu). Roadkill is iffy this time of year, let your nose be the judge (IDK what to tell you in regards to possum - it's nasty fresh). If it came out of a dumpster, don't eat the wriggly bits. If it came out of a freezer and was in there a while, think back on how many times your electric was off in that time period. If it's not considered good enough to go into a hot dog, don't eat it. If it's green, pray that it's a vegetable. If a person spends 40 hours/week cooking as their job, and they're skinny... don't eat what they're cooking (because they probably don't).

WtF is Canadian bacon, anyway?

Does anyone eat beef ribs? If not, why not?

I thought maybe there just wasn't enough meat on them or something, but that was just a guess.

Ah my friend... the normal chat level we share must bore others to tears... but I've never been shy of unzipping my skull and spilling the contents directly into a thread. Perhaps someone will find a nugget in the stream.

They also sold many sizes of corks
Huh... I can trim a wine cork. Wanted plugs for a while. A nugget for Tead!

Blame it on your success
Tead luvs a good compliment.
But, one must remember.... we all start at the beginning of the path. There have been many, many paths walked between my first path and my current footfalls. I could bore you endlessly with tales of things that didn't work... we all can.
Seeing the chart again is fun for me. I remember this exact issue as it rolled thru a discussion mostly between myself, RM, Lex, and Weas (forgive me if I've forgotten you... it's been a day or two).
In the end, I came away from all the words and testing with the opinion I put forth.
hmmm.... lotta words.... coulda gone with 'been there, done that'
I forget what issue I left in your bright mind to discover the other day, but this one will fall to you as well. Enjoy! Find me a technique that works cause, as you can tell, I really wanna get something usable out of it.
Hmmm.... of course, I'd have to buy some pens again.....

You encountered fresh water crawdads.... I assume related, but they grow in the nice clean rivers and lakes. Crawfish grow in the brackish swamp waters and are about 10x in size... big enough for a good bite or even two. OH! Plus suckin the goo outta da heads... dat's what da beers for! Pinch dem tails and suck dem heads baby! Damn.... slide me sumahdat garlic baby. Mmmmmm dat sausage looks good. Here... try dis ardichoke.

Traditionally yummy!
I general speak to a crowd not from NOLA... so my words come from that angle generally.

Don't eat people!

Safe!

Does anyone eat beef ribs? If not, why not?

Really... you're gonna bring THAT argument around?!?!
Age old... 2 options (don't get creative dammit!).... easy. Endless.

Some would say "Beef ribs? Why would you eat that? Have you not tried pork ribs? Don't you see how they're just so much better than any beef rib could ever be? Are you nuts? Have you seen my shotgun?"

Some would say something else, but I don't know them and would never listen to such lies anyway!

My 85yr old neighbor wants me to smoke her up some beef ribs. I'll indulge her with my best efforts, and I'll even sample the product, but the run after that will surely be baby backs.

You mean something other then the plastic that might be leaching from the container?

And that, my friend, is why you need to pay attention to what type of material your buckets/pots are made of... HDPE, LDPE, PP and PET are all considered "safe" non-leaching plastics by the FDA. There was a discussion not long ago about this and i newer pvc was part of that too. Guess it makes sense since thats what carries most our tap water...

Tead, giving a new definition to "Smoke me out, bro!" ;)

I just like beef better than pork in general, thus the question. I have no specific ax to grind against a pig (but hand me a sheep hammer, and...).

You mean something other then the plastic that might be leaching from the container?

Well, the way I see it, if you are already using a specific material for your container, why bother hunting around for "something other than..." to cover a tiny little hole?

I'll stick with two-liter pop bottles, for the most part, for my hempy containers. Not because I feel that they're the safest thing on the planet (I have no idea, really) - but because I've consumed enough of their original contents over the years that I figure a bud off of a plant grown in one wouldn't even be a bump on the ol' statistics.

There's always glass, if you have the money. It's really not difficult to make holes in it. But, for me... Nah. I receive a container for free when occasionally I purchase two liters of Mountain Dew - and can get all I want by going for a walk on trash night. And I'm guessing that the plastic used in them rates higher on the "plastic health scale" than that used in nursery pots or other containers that are sold either with plants in them or for the purpose of putting plants in, simply because people are not expected to consume liquids from those.

But, as I mentioned, that's just a guess. Don't take my words as wisdom. I looked around at a young age and saw family, friends, and neighbors who appeared to be trying to life their lives the healthy way still dying of cancer and other ills that generally bring great suffering - to them and those who care about them - and kind of figured I'd just enjoy myself instead of trying to follow some kind of healthy plan. <SIGH> And now I'm realizing that it might not have been the best idea I ever came up with. . . .

Could have been worse. Just sitting here, having read that, I quickly thought up a couple that, well, were too off-color for me to post (and that's saying something ;) ) .

BtW, starting a couple this evening. At least one will be hempy. Wish me luck?

Here is an update on my hempy plants. All autos except one. The Dark Devil plants are growing nicely. Upon taking the tape off the hole this morning I discovered beautiful white roots growing behind the tape. So I guess that means they've reached the reservoir and can conceivably start to grow more vigorously now.

This first plant I topped at 17 days old. This was the plant with the three spotted leaves. That problem seems to have been remedied by adding just a little more Cal-Mag

This plant I fimmed. I wanted to see how the Dark Devil responded to both topping and fimming.

Both have roots into the reservoir and looking good to me.

Looking good, I see some sweet cola's coming from those

That would be nice, Chris. Doesn't seem to be a lot of information about how autos finish out in hempy. At least that I was able to find. And if @SweetSue doesn't have any information then there might not be any. I do have one photo (Seedsman Fem Blueberry) in a gallon hempy pot. Anxious to see how that does.

I wonder if it's possible that something like that MIGHT be said to make Tead chuckle a touch?

Ideas that make Tead chuckle a touch..... just sayin.
Lol...yes Sue is a WEALTH of info for sure

My DDA never got huge, oz+ or more, but I just love the colors of them

Next grow I'm doing a DWC of the DDA to see how big I can get it

This is my first attempt at a Hempy Bucket. I started with a solo cup with a 50 / 50 mix of perlite and promix. About 10 days after it sprouted I moved it in to the 1.5 gallon bucket filled with just perlite. The strain is SODK auto from Mephisto Genetics. It seemed slow to get going, but has taken of in the past week. She is a little over 4 weeks old.
