Hempy Headquarters

I had my first successful cutting root in a solo hempy pot. :yahoo:

It's been exactly 14 days since I cut her from the mother. I soaked the perlite-filled cup in a dilution of aloe vera gel and water, dipped the cutting into aloe and then into rooting hormone and nestled her in the perlite. That cup went into an inflated produce bag, to be checked every three days. During that time I flushed her twice with fresh aloe water.

I promised myself I wouldn't check until it'd been two full weeks.

I taped the hole to keep the water in.

Then I filled the cup with distilled water.

A gentle wiggle and she came right out. Roots!! :woohoo: How easy was that? :laughtwo:

Scooping the perlite aside to seat her again, the tape got removed and the water drained to the reservoir depth.

She sits in the shadows tonight.

Tomorrow I'll find her a small spot about 24" from the light to start her move towards greater illumination.

Nice sue i was thinking about the way i clone the other day n how others do it straight up in the medium i always thought it lookd harder cuz i wud be forced to have to be patient n jus sit n wait to see if it gets roots lol where as my cloner bucket i can jus lift the lid which all the clones sit in n then i can check on them n c hw they doing hahaha im to impatient lol its a virtue i apparently dnt have  but yea jus wanted to say congrats and oh yea b4 i forget im bout to go put the dc seeds into a paper towel then into hempy pots myself im so excited to get them going and so far for hempy results im a 100% success at seedlings and clones all 7 seeds popped above the ground and r going strong 2 of which r almost ready to start nute feeding but im still waiting on my remo veg nutes from amazon to show up but remember i have those roots organic bottled nutes tht u said i shud do a side by side grow with each remo n roots n see how they do n which does better well now tht 2 r almost ready n im still waiting for the remo to show up i think i mite jus start these 2 in the roots and the rest remo and go with that n see how it does what do u think good idea or shud i wait 4 the remo??

In the continuing work for the benefit of science...lol..my Hempy starts comparison

I did a Dinachem and Malawi straight into Hempy with some osmo+ , 2 on the right

I then did 2 Candida and a Skunk#1. Hempys with a FFOF dirt bed in the top of the perlit with Osmo+, 3 on the left

The one on right is a cube with a seed that's a DDA. Last time I did that it worked well for an auto to move straight to it's final pot when it pops it's head, probably today

420-magazine-mobile1168732426.jpg

As u see, the dirt bed starts are WAY ahead of the others , and where started 5 days after the straight hempys

I'm wondering if the osmo+ just doesn't provide enough nutes to start a seed.
Seems I read Tead soaked his perlit in nutes water

The dirt bed seems to work great so far

Fun fun fun

I'm running the osmo + and....

I gave my seed started in hempy a little kelp for about 2 weeks. 5 drops of Kelp me Kelp You in a cup of de-chlorinated water. I'm quite new to hempy but it just felt like the right thing for the plant.

Did it help Jim??

I actuly gave them a bit of nute mix, and well, you can see it burned em a bit

They are a bit stunted, but I suspect when the roots hit the resivore they will BUST out

As tiny seedlings they don't need nutrients for a few days anyway Jones. I'd wait on the Remo nutes. They'll be there within days, correct?

I'm guessing it helped. Seed was actually started in a small rock wool cube. It's had a tough life as the perlite originally had 8 times the amount of osmo + that Tead recommended.

She's beautiful Jim. Mine looks very much like yours.

She looks very comfortable next to her Ultra Dawg neighbor.

Scorpio, nice test run. I'm glad to see that worked out so well for you. :high-five: I've seen people do similar things with soil pots, building a small well of lighter soil in the center to start the seed in. My last seed popped in two days in perlite. So many options to offer.

The reason I'm scared of products like osmo+ is because it's made for ornamental plants, not consumable plants.

The ingredients of the two appear to be substantially similar in nature (magnesium sulfate, et cetera). The coating on Osmocote Plus' prills is, I believe, made from linseed oil (not at all likely to be harmful, AfaIK). And Mom has been enjoying "Osmocote Plus tomatoes" every day ;) .

But I do understand your concern. Enough so that, when I recalled your post just now, I sent an email to the company about it. I assume that a company representative will respond to my question on Monday of, if they receive a lot of emails, shortly thereafter.

I will try to remember to post the information I receive. If I have not done so by next weekend, it probably means I ended up forgetting, lol, and someone should probably give me a kick and remind me (assuming, of course, that anyone is interested).

Do you guys reuse your perlite? Do you use enzymes to decay the dead roots?

In theory, one could burn the root material out, since perlite is a fully-oxidized, non-flammable material. It'd probably be easier to just screen it, though. That would get rid of most of the roots/etc. but I'd guess that there would still be some minimal amount left behind. As to whether or not that would amount to a problem in the next grow... I would tend to doubt it, assuming that material came from healthy plants. But I am, of course, not an expert.

Awesome, I look forward to hearing what they tell you. I do know my worries are probably needless, it's just something I was taught long ago and old habits die hard an all that. If I was really worried about it I'd go all organic, which I do on my patio. I find the laziness one can have with osmo+ to be quite appealing. I'm sure there are valid reasons they can't advertise it for vegetables, and it's not cause they don't want to. Even so I'm sure your osmo+ tomatoes are still healthier then store bought.

Trust Jones. It'll arrive Monday or Tuesday. Remember it's a holiday weekend, and that often starts bogging things down a week ahead.

I screen as much of the roots out as possible and then rinse and soak in a dilution of Clorox and water for a few hours. Then I simply rinse, dry and reuse. No problems so far with bits of roots in the mix. You can't expect to get them all out, but a decent colander helps.

What I have learned is that screening out the leftover Osmo Plus is a big PITA. I do a little bit every day and wonder why I try, but old habits of thriftiness die hard. Lol!

Are you sure it's actually leftover fertilizer and not just empty prills? I've read that the "shells" will take longer to disappear (decompose). IOW, if you try to squash one between your finger and thumb, does it (meaning it's empty)?
