Sure looked like a crack to me too.

Why is everyone staring at my crack?

Thanks for the thread Sue. I was just thinking of starting one dedicated to all things hempy but a couple people told me you already had one going. Should have known huh. What would this place be without sweetsue. ;). You embody the 420 spirit better then anyone around.

Heres some pics from my latest hempy grow coming to an end.

This is C99. Basically 12/12 fs but the first couple weeks were 18/6. Final harvest weight was 42g. Good yeild for no veg time.

Welcome Nicholas! :hugs::hugs::hugs:

What lovely pictures. I'm switching to hempy for the same reason. May I ask, did you decern any increased quality one way or the other between your test subjects?

I was stopping to note that I've deep-sixed the Ultra Dawg into total darkness for two months, so I won't know the total dry weight until I trim after that.

I've done lots and lots of reading but this stuff confuses me still, so please excuse (and hopefully correct me), some posts seem to indicate that the whole point of hempy pots is to have the roots sit in a reservoir of water at the bottom of the pot, using various mediums mostly perlite, but could be coco, or perlite/vermiculite mix and some people have mixed in hydro rocks too.

Then from reading some other posts I found out that hempy just means using only perlite in any pot or hydro system.

So what's your definition?

We both use daisy paper plates for trimming, jiffy root plugs for sprouting, and plastic trash cans for pots...
Do you use a USB fan to help evaporate you concentrate?

Just runs out the overflow in the center instead of a hole on the side. Then down the drain pipe. Hope that makes sense.

shouldn't it have a 2" riser then?

My definition of a hempy system is any soil-free passive hydro system that has an approximate 2" deep reservoir and is filled with a medium that will effectively wick the nutrient-rich water up to the root zone. The original hempy pots were a mixture of perlite and vermiculite. I prefer plain perlite because I feel it does that wicking most efficiently.

Any one else care to add their two cents worth? :battingeyelashes:

No need, lol. Other than to state that the height of the hole is really up to the gardener (but that's a good starting point).

You can grow a nice plant in hempy with a 2 gallon trash can from wallyworld for a $1. I have used a usb fan. They work good.
Next grow i was thinking of using a 3 gallon fabric pot with a 2" resevoir placed in the bottom. I would still consider this hempy but with the added benefit of >O2 for the roots.

@Sue, it seemed potency was about the same from hempy vs. soil but hempy destroyed soil when it came to smell and yeild. I just cant justify growing soil anymore when i can almost double the yeild with hempy. All you need is perlite and its much easier and cheaper to come by then good soil in my neck of the woods.

What you're talking about doing with the fabric pot is a SWICK. The exterior and seperate reservoir wicks beautifully. I used them extensively. I wouldn't call them hempy, but they certainly are a form of passive hydro. I found SWICKs to be a marvelous way to let the plant water itself, and have an entire thread dedicated to it. It was one of my first community threads, if not the first.

SWICK Watering Systems - Letting the Plant Water Itself

I'm contrasting the Devil's Carnival in Doc's Kit soil next to a Carnival grown in hempy. I realize this is apples and oranges, but the soil strain is kicking ass in the smell and terpene development at this point, about a month into bloom. The hempy just started to express fragrance and trichomes. It'll be interesting to see how quickly she catches up with her cousin.

The hempy is on the left.

You can imagine the weight differential between the mediums. That DC is in 10 gallons of soil. Arrrgh! I finally decided soil isn't for me. Now I need to make nutrients affordable. :laughtwo:

Not sure what thread it was but someone suggested coiling a beer funnel around the inside of an air pot with the funnel sticking out the top and watering through the funnel. I might try that next time I use a smart pot instead of my trash cans.

Another hemp added to the mix. :cheesygrinsmiley:

CBD Critical Cure 2.6 is 23 days from being cut from her mother, and definately time to get this baby into the perlite.

This will be my first CBD Critical Cure grown in hempy. So far this has been my best soil plant, and the only reason I'd be keeping soil in my grow, so this girl needs to perform in a dramatic fashion to keep the momentum going for an all hempy flip. This strain is the base medication for the family. It has to perform big, every grow.

So would I, and it should (in theory, at least) provide for the possibility of more aeration than the standard setup. I would be wary of increased evaporation from one's fan(s) blowing air at the pot, though. I'd expect you to have to water more often - whereas the generic hempy loses moisture through the plant consuming it and evaporation from the top (only, disregarding the small amount that might evaporate through the little hole), those fabric pots might be conducive to evaporation through the material itself. But that's just a guess, lol, because fancy pots are not in my budget.

They were in my budget, before I determined to switch to hempy. That means I have extra TS, if you're interested, in 5, 7, 10, and 15 gallon sizes. Let me know if you can use some. :battingeyelashes:

I grew some critical cure for my wife and it made some nice chunky buds with a strong earthy taste. Didnt do much for me but it was a pretty plant.

In my stoner opinion if the resevior is inside the pot its a hempy, outside the pot its a swick :)
