Checking the roots

I managed to get this root ball free without scissors. :laughtwo:

I taped it all the way under the edge, and that was still not enough to keep algae from growing. The drive to life is strong.

No residual muck to be concerned with.

She was a good plant. The buds smell mouthwatering. :laughtwo:

Hey sue I had a quick question since I'm germing 5 regular seeds of an unknown strain and this is my first attempt at a hempy grow I'm guna use Fox farms veg nute till I can order some Reno nutrients online next week or so but if my nutes show up sooner then I might not even use the Fox farms stuff but after the tail pops when I'm germing the seeds shud I put them into a rockwool cube or shud I use some peat moss I got from premier and make like alil homemade peat plug of sorts?? Also idk if u have heard of Reno nutes or not but what wud u suggest I use if something else just trying to stay organic as possible lol oh and what size container would be best to start in and the plants are not autos if that helps?? Thanx again for the info and help

3 days later and the 2 hempy girls are doing what you'd expect... Not much of anything. Lol a few more leaves, a few more mm's of upward growth.

Flower, I noticed you were curious about hempy pot size and plant height. I know you are an experienced grower and i see you are familiar with LST , however my current auto hempy grow might help you decide. I am 18 days since First leaves. The pic is from yesterday. I have no doubt I can keep this under two feet and produce a ton of bud sites.
She was Fim'd as well. Kind of hard on her for being just 17 days old and she is showing a little stress. Still growing and drinking like mad!
I layed her parallel today and am going to turn her 90 degrees in the next couple weeks.

These seedlings have seen treated to all the same conditions and germinated at the same time. They are different statins, what do you guys think is more likely, a finicky strain or just a dud seed?

It's probably just the strains. :) In my experience it's best not to compare them to each other, but just to watch them as individuals and keep them happy.

Hey, Gauge! Thanks! What size pot are you in?

While I'm here, can anyone tell me for sure if a 4" rockwool cube will transition to hempy?

I generally wait until a dozen or so root tips show on the bottom of the cube before placing in coco. If I started a hempy with this baby I'd probably use a 2 liter bottle at least to accommodate the width of the cube.

My thought is that once it's in the perlite and new roots start to explore it will eventually pick up with the growth.

My worry is that because it's an autoflower the delay in growth up top - while the roots expand down below - will set back the potential of the plant.

I germinated a Blue Dream in rockwool for my hempy pot. It's a smaller 1 1/2 inch cube but concept is still the same. I made a special brew of kelp to drip on the young one to keep her green and healthy.

I think a square that big would interrupt the evaporation process necessary for the Hempy process to work. If it were a small starter cube yeah!

The Remo nutes will be a good fit for hempy. It's what Rifleman uses in his hydro and he raves about it. You won't need anything but water initially anyway so you'll have time to wait on the new nutes.

Plant size is dictated by pot size, but Tead grows everything in tight root spaces and does right nice by them. My new mute line has me growing trees and massive bushes, causing me to rethink to larger pots. I think you'll be comfortable starting with something between 1-3 gallons and see how you take to it. Look for trash cans with straight sides. I found mine at Big Lots. They aren't as common as you'd hope, which is why Tead went with 6" PVC.

I had tremendous luck germinating directly into perlite. Soak the perlite before planting and soak the seed for 12-16 hours. Plant pointed side down and cover with some type of dome to increase humidity levels. It took mine two days to pop in the solo cup hempy I made.

I see no reason why this wouldn't work in a hempy. The roots will be outside the cube and reaching for the red, so the size of the cube won't really matter. I speak from instinct only. :battingeyelashes:

Another hempy transplant. How easy is this? :laughtwo:

Time to give the Blue Dream more root space.

I start by rinsing the perlite, which saturates it and prepares it to start wicking up the nutrient mix. After getting a clear stream I empty all of the water out before filling with the nutrient mix.

IMG_012857.JPG

Next, make a deep hole to set the roots.

IMG_013159.JPG

Free the plant from the solo cup.

IMG_013246.JPG

All nicely in place and topped off. Easy-peasy.

All tucked away, safe and snug.

I've potted up my last soil plant. I've decided I want to try running with only hempy, at least for a time, so I can make a fair judgement about which method I prefer. I'm leaning strongly to hempy only, but it's something I've not yet attempted. The Carnival I planted today will be harvested in about 120 days and from that point in I'll probably run hempy exclusively for at least six months.

I have to admit, hempy and I have turned out to be an excellent pairing.

Thanx sue between the slow dry method and now tryn my hand at hempy growing uve been a great help thanx so much for the info.

So wen u say i shud start with a 1 to 3 gallon pot r u meaning start out in that pot? Shud i start them in there final container? wen i was reading threw this post it seemed like u guys where hving slower starting off points wen u start from final pot versus starting small and up potting i cud be wrong please correct me if i am but wud it be better 4me to start them in say a 2litter bottle or even a styrofoam cup then uppot as they get older to a 1 to 3 gallon pot??

Can I start my seeds in these?? I got them germinating now as I type this up just wondering if these buckets holding the 2liter bottles wud be ok to use to catch the run off that comes out of the hole I will be putting in the 2liter bottles?? Also wen u say rinse out the perlite b4 planting ur seed or clone is it ok 2 use my tap water or shud I use ro water??

Cool Jones. That will stabilize the bottles. I'd recommend you germinate in a solo cup or an insulated cup, set up like a little hempy. I made my hole about 1.5" from the bottom.

IMG_024154.JPG

I picked up some domes they use for slushies and taped over the opening.

IMG_024267.JPG

This creates the perfect germinating environment. Fill with dampened perlite, soak the seed, plant and wait for the seedling to pop up, all ready to impress you.

IMG_024360.JPG

I usually transplant when the leaves reach the outer edges of the solo cup. Then it's into the finish pot, or into a 2liter, if something larger isn't available yet. You may need to cut them out of the 2 liter bottles if you choose to go bigger later. They explode the root zone quickly.

When I wet the perlite down initially, and when I rinse it, I use tap water. That's why I empty it out completely before I add the nutrients, which are applied using RO or distilled water. So, rinsing is done with tap, feeding is done with RO or distilled. When I flush I use tap water too, and empty completely before adding the next nutrient mix.

Wrap those bottles twice with duck tape before you drill the hole. It'll strengthen them as well as protect the roots from the light.

Awesome thanx sue really appreciate it well since I'm guna have to go get some duct tape 2morrow but I wanted to start at least one 2nite lol I used electrical tape and black permanent market to tape up the bottom I'll post a pic of it wen I get it all setup

Haha! Love a man of action. :laughtwo: Sounds like something I'd have done.

Ok well I got my foam cup which is 16 oz jus 2 let u no n I taped it up and got a hole in the bottom roughly 1.5 inches from the bottom here is the cup and 2 2liters done jus gotta finish the bottom on the one 2liter then I'll have both fully done n ready

Ok so here is what I came up with for a humi dome lol now shud I put this in the 2liter with perlite around the foam cup? Or shud I just put the foam cup in its own lol bowl to catch run off??
