Heavenly Hybrid 2nd Grow: Blackberry Kush, Coco Grow, LED450

Earlier today I installed a new carbon filter in my closet tent, then I gave Queen BBK a drink for the day. About half an hour later, I went back in the room and it reeked! I was buggin, thinking the filter isn’t working, the whole neighborhood is reeking, all my neighbors now know, because I’m pumping stanky, sweet, bud-air out of our roof! Well, no - that’s not what actually happened. o_OShe is so smelly and strong, the mere 5 minutes I had her out for watering smelled up the whole room and half the house! Lol, thank the heavens for carbon filters. :laughtwo::laughtwo::laughtwo:

Thanks MrS!

@doubleH You may have noticed that all of MrS' quotes of mine are soil related, and I'm here to say that coco is considered hydro so a slurry test doesn't apply to you.

I have also read on more than one occasion that checking the pH of runoff from coco is completely unnecessary and just liable to drive you crazy. Make sure your pH is correct going in (5.6-6.0 I believe) and water to runoff.

Indulge me while I try to think this through. I have read that before too, and I think I can go along with that thought because my BBK has runoff above 7 on more than one occasion. She’s been doing great throughout with just a little bit of leaf issues that are recent. But I’ve also been told that runoff is a very big deal in coco, because coco is hydro, so I don’t know what to think! :lot-o-toke: and then throw into the mix, that I’m using organic nutrients, so that changes my pH range in itself. The research I’ve done (from GWE) lists the range for soil (6.0-7.0), the range for coco/hydro (5.5-6.5) and then says if you’re using organic nutes in coco (me), that it will fall somewhere in between. o_O
Honestly, my problem children are behaving much better since I got them on racks, so this is pure over-analysis (I cant stop, I’ve tried). I made multiple changes over a short time, so I’ve done myself that disservice. Would it be fair to assess that the issues started with wet feet/overwatering, leading to pH root zone issues? And that runoff ph really doesn’t matter? The plants I dip/dunked had the highest runoff and had an immediate positive response, so it’s just a little hard for me to mentally let go of that. The other factor that could have had impact on the girls was the cold cement flooring, also remedied by the racks. I’m just trying to learn where I went wrong with these autos, as specifically as I can, from the info I have.

I think it's important to remember that autos are an unknown going in. You can treat them really well and they can still flower at 10" and 24 days. There may be more stable strains than others, but even some of the famous ones (I'm looking at you Jack Herer auto) can have large variations between plants. So do not be disheartened by poorly growing autos.

The things you are correcting - the cold floor, the wet feet, the wire racks - will improve every plant you grow, so that's most important. In terms of pH, I would stick in the middle of your range (6.0) where you're safe no matter what, and make sure you are watering to runoff. I haven't read that pH of the runoff in coco is a good thing to do unless you want to make yourself crazy, but I would post that question in Derby's or Penny's thread and see what they do. They do rather well in coco. :)

Ok, thank you Shed! :Namaste: One more quick question, I’ve been watering less than I was before and being more vigilant about watering the 5 gal girls in a circle, not the whole pot. Do I still water to runoff in the smaller circle?

All this! ^^^

None of us coco growers ph runoff HH. As long as you ph going in you are good. And the one time i flushed burnt the crap out of the girls. Built up salts i suspect? Just give them that steady nutes daily (i stay in 500 to 600 ppms) to avoid the dreaded lockout. If they show any def i'll bump it up to 800 ppms for a week or two.(mid flower)

Thats great! Thank you Kis!! I’ve been giving plain ph-ed water every 3rd watering. I’ve read to do that every other time, you and Newty don’t do plain water at all. It gets so difficult sometimes, to know what to follow. So many different opinions.

You got this sister. Problem with coco is when you start feeding 800 ppms plus. You can lock out and then they just stop growing. I followed pw's lead and generally stay in the 500 to 600 ppms school. I was a classic under nute guy and Derb made me push it to the limit just to see how far was to far. Was steady 900 ppms and they showed some burn. Was so proud. I finally fed them a bit too much.

Lol, I’ve been pushing mine a little lately too, especially the cal mag. I finally saw a touch of burnt tips on one today. Throw on the brakes, backing it down!

For the sake of follow up and for anyone who might read this someday - I just heard from both of them and neither one tests pH of runoff.

I came here expecting to find your plants not looking so good due to the question you asked in my thread but all of the more recent stuff looks fine. Also a question I wanted to ask from following up but do you only grow autos? Have you ever grown a photoperiod?

Hi Ase! Thanks for checking in! I’ve had a bit of chaos for my second grow on. My first grow was 2 photos. My second grow ended up being mislabeled seeds, and what I thought were photos, ended up being 4/5 autos. The only actual photoperiod of the bunch is my current Blackberry kush quadline. The rest that you see are autos in a second tent, that I’ve been crash-coursing through.
