Haight Solid State vs. H.G.LED

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

just wanted to say hello! fine job you are doing only 2 months to go!

hi and thanks!

2 months seems like such a long time, but the 5 week veg didn't seem to drag too bad.

I hope the second half goes as fast, but I'm not going to rush anything.

Gonna do my best to keep this thing going down the middle of the road and see what kinda buds these lights can produce.

Very long day today.

Gonna kick back with a bowl or three and go see what the girls are up to ;).

I chose this pair of plants to compare because they are the largest in each group, although all 8 plants are remarkably uniform in size.

They are still in the stretch phase with more pistils showing every day.

When I took them out for the pics, they stunk the place up real good ;).

That is some seriously sweet action dude! Very Very nice! Perceptually the HSS looked taller, but obviously they are not?

What's your comparison opinion at this point in the game?

Thanks for the update SS, loving this grow! lovin' it!

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

It looks like the HGL is promoting more bushiness, but if you look at alot of the middle foliage it is forming curved leaves to catch the reflected light coming from the tent walls and the HSS seems to be just trying to put out bigger sails in more direct top down light. Or that is what I see and I am stoned and half blind...:smokin:

:peace: from the mountains.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

yeah, that looks great. . . they look nearly identical except the the HGL's lower branching seems to be much more vertically oriented and the HSS seem to just wander out like the classic Christmas tree shape. would you say that is a trend they all share, or just those two? maybe because the light is more diffuse in the HSS tent?

i'm not sure thats the cause of the curling MH. overwater once? or maybe over fert once? dunno, it looks fine though.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

The part I am really interested in is coming up very shortly, the initial formation of the budding sites, then later in the grow how the buds fatten.

They look beautiful.
Now we wait:smokin2:

Dude those photos are amazing! This is like watching an incredibly slow episode of CSI!

I'm curious about the factors that have contributed to the drastic difference in the plants. Do you have any opinions yet? I would think the HSS would be blowing the HGL away due to its wattage advantage but it isn't. Maybe the lens angles or the LED wavelength selection? Both? Geez, I can't wait for my light to get here so I can start experimenting for myself!

I'm also curious what you think about increasing the average temperature in LED grows (not this one, don't change a thing) to 80F-85F in order to increase soil evaporation?

Keep growing SS!

I'd say that if you averaged out the heights of all the plants, the HSS plants would average 1" taller at this point.

This pair was very close in height, but there is about 1" of variation within the 8 plants. I'm shimming the shorter plants with 1" thick pieces of styrofoam to keep the canopy even.

I usually have to do a lot more shimming to keep things even, but maybe LED's produce more uniform growth? That would be something interesting to look for in an LED vs HID comp grow.

What's your comparison opinion at this point in the game?

I'm going to respond to the rest of the posts and give my general impressions at the end.

thank you brother, I'm glad you're enjoying this grow! ;)

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Another great update SS! I know I'm biased but to me the HSS plants look perfect top to bottom....

Well, I'm not biased, and even being as much of a perfectionist as I am, I would have to agree.

They are beautiful plants, but they won't truly be perfect until they're covered with sticky buds ;).

So far, so good.

thanks sfhaze!

The HGL plants have had more leaf curl throughout the grow, but I haven't been able to figure out why, nor am I certain that it's a negative issue.

It gets more pronounced after watering, but the leaves just tend to curl more than the HSS leaves, which are coffee-table book perfect.

I have noticed on the HGL plants, that once the lower branches approach the canopy and start getting more light, the curling significantly lessens.

That makes me suspect that it's a light-related issue, but there may be other factors at play, so I'm not sure.

thanks brother!

Astute observation on the branching. It's a shared trait in their respective groups.

On both groups, the branches are heading for where the light is.

The HGL branches take off and head straight up for the canopy, while the HSS branches take off more laterally, and then continue to branch upwards at a much shallower angle.

i'm not sure thats the cause of the curling MH. overwater once? or maybe over fert once? dunno, it looks fine though.

I'm almost positive it's not a watering or fert issue. I think it may just be an example of plants looking different due to environmental differences, which in this grow, is pretty much limited to the lights.

Like you, I also don't think it's a big deal at this point.

thanks brother wheelo!
