Grow #2: Outdoor/CFL Auto 420 Blueberry & AK-47 Smart Pots With Dr Earth Soil

Damn the day got away from me! Here's this morning's peek at the grow:

Blue 4 day 14:

And AK 4 day 51:

My theory on the brown pistils and the white ones is this: The brown ones were the "oh my god it's god damned hot I better get flowering" pistils during the freakout stage. The white ones are the "oh it's time for me flower now so I'll start pistiling up"!

So why wait for Saturday when you can do it Friday night!

Here is the new lighting setup:

2 @ 32 watts of T8 tubes, 6500K, 2710 lumens each. Total 64 watts, 5420 lumens.

Of course, it fell on the plants while I was adjusting the height, but given how small they are and how flexible the stems are, none of them noticed. It did smell like AK-47 afterward so obv there were some crushed trichomes!

I added two 2700K CFLs on the side of AK 4 @ 23 watts each (1600 lumens each) for a total of 46 watts, 3200 additional lumens.

Final setup:

Let's see if they all notice the additional brightness!

Since you've all seen the huge spider that was keeping me from using my back door, here's the sucker guarding the front door! Luckily the web is just around the porch light. I disturbed it cleaning the moths out when I replaced the CFL with one of the now "spare" ones!

Not sure you can get the scale, but the big round butt was over ½" across.

Digging all that fuzz!

I used to keep spiders in the tents. But after I added diatomaceous earth to my arsenal, they wouldn't survive in there anymore. Kinda miss them

Ok, Sunday night update:

Hot AF today as the Santa Ana's have been blowing through. Like 38% RH this morning which you know if you've been reading me is absurdly low here. Was warm when I headed off for my son's 10am soccer game and I was getting heat stroke just sitting in the sun watching them (face flushed, rapid heart rate...)! On the way home the car read 97º say what? So quicker than rice balls the plants all went back into the shed under the lights. Don't want to mess up another grow with the heat! It was only about 80º in there so phewf!

High of 88º tomorrow so I'm wondering if I should just give them another day out of the sun. AK 4 will need nutes tomorrow but I may just stick it back with the lights.

Update on the front-porch spider front: here it is in its natural habitat, waiting for moths attracted to the porch light. You can see where it spends the days on the top right corner of the pic:

I've seen tests where flat white will give higher total par in a room than mylar will. But Orca Grow-film wins all the tests. That is very expensive though. I am considering to just use flat white for the second half of my grow-room. The first half was done with Orca.

If you do paint, use flat white. It reflects best.
Although it seems counter intuitive, the gloss and semigloss are not great for reflection. They can also cause hot spots.

Monday morning and it looks like no painting of the fluorescent reflector will be happening any time soon. Too many other things I have to do around the house than wonder if the paint I'm using will stick to the metal and survive the heat.

Before the pics, let's get the details out of the way. First, it's going to be too hot today to chance leaving them outside to broil, so after this morning's routine they all went back in the shed under the lights.

AK 4 got 32 ounces of nutes this morning clocking in around 700 PPM (a bit low but no runoff to test). In a gallon of water went: 3ml cal/mag+, ½ tsp OpenSesame, 1½ tsp TigerBloom.

Blue 4 and AK 7 got 32 ounce each of nutes at around 550 PPM (a little high but I'm feeling reckless at this stage). In a gallon of water went: 3ml cal/mag+, 2 tbs BigBloom, 1 tsp GrowBig, and ¼ tsp GreatWhite. Blue 4 had no runoff but AK 7 did. Hmm...unintentional difference in the soil/perlite ratios?

After that, the soil for all three got a sprinkling of Diatomaceous Earth, per DeVille's suggestion in my first grow thread (which, now that it's marked as complete, has seen a lot of action for some reason!). So if you see white dust on the leaves, while unintentional at this point, it's DE.

I used a full on cartridge-style dust mask when shaking it onto the soil. That stuff flies everywhere!

Now on to the pics of the day:

Blue 4 on day 17, beginning to pick up a bit of steam:

AK 7 on day 15, beginning to slow down and look a bit weak. Having some issues with the first leaves. Too much neem? Nute burn? Won't know much until I can finally see what the new growth looks like, if there ever is any!

And the ever-pistil-packing AK 4 on day 54. The AK 1 didn't get the first chop until day 84, so at least 30 days to go. November POTM? Look out BWaff!

INCOMING CLONES!

I have no idea what I'm doing here so I need help...

I went to the friendly-if-uninformed indoor grower's house after work and he pulled his plants out to take clones from. I took 2 AK-47 fem and 1 Gold Leaf fem (both 420). He said this is how he had done his clones and got 9 of 10 to grow, so I did it the same way. He cut the branches and I stripped off the lower leaves, cut the tips across, sliced the bottom at a sharp angle, and stuck them in wet potting soil. Unfortunately he had already decided to flip them so the AK-47s have pistils. I had to identify them for him as he had no idea which plant was which strain. The sativa vs indica leaves seemed to be a dead giveaway but he doesn't do any research.

Anyway, I put them in the shed with the lights. Should I do something else with them instead before too long goes by? Lightly scrape the lower stem that's in the soil? Cut the leaves shorter? Add Great White or something without having to buy Clonex or anything like that ? Just keep them moist? Can I put them outside during the day with the autos and maybe cover the soil to keep it from drying out? Too bright for cloning?

Please help me grow my first clones all as I have NO idea what to do to get them to root. Will the AK-47s stop flowering and reveg or were they taken too late?

Chime in all you cloning photo growers...I am in need of assistance!

K you can mist the tops to keep them moist at the same time they need to go into 24/0 or as close as you can get so that they will reveg and I wouldn't put them outside for at least two weeks let them get strong then start to strengthen them up by giving a couple hours of sunlight after that two weeks. In the meantime start with a half strength veg feeding with great white.

Re: Grow #2 - Outdoor/CFL Auto 420 Blueberry & AK-47 Smart Pots With Dr Earth Soil

I took clones successfully on my first try. The key is humidity. They drink through their leaves. Don't put them under intense light as it can encourage photosynthesis when the plant needs to be establishing roots. A dome or bag (as sweet sue swears by) helps with humidity if it's low .....wait for it...... in the shed but really just keeping the humidity up and the medium moist is the trick

And if you have clonex and its only been an hour gently remove them and dip the ends in sprinkle a little great white in the hole and boom!
