Those look great especially considering they're only getting 5 hours of sun a day! When you recover from trimming the backyard grow you'll have to turn around and do this one! By then you'll be able to do something this size in your sleep.
 
Ok, while this is going to be a dull thread on the actual growing side, I'd like to discuss some theoretical growing situations.

Here's the first: CLONES. I know a guy who coincidentally bought seeds (photo) from the same company I did at almost the same time I did. He's growing in a 10' square shed in his backyard with one (I think) HPS light. [rant] He has no idea what he is doing and is using Miracle Grow plant food and watering with his hose and has no idea how to dry and cure. His product is crap (no buds, just a lot of tight sugar leaves) and he's giving it away to people who were previously willing to reimburse me for the cost of mine (I wanted to make back my sunk costs before I gave it away!). Maybe they'll come crawling back now that they know the difference between quality and quantity! [/rant] I tried to offer advice but he was getting his instructions from someone else and said he had it under control.

Anyway, earlier this summer he offered me a clone from the plants he was growing (he's a nice guy and didn't know he was undercutting my reimbursement plan!) but I turned him down because I was in the middle of my successful first grow. Now I'm wondering...if he has any more clones, do you think I can veg them outside and inside (so more than 12 hours of light, even if it's CFLs) through the winter and then leave them outside after March to continue on their veggie/flower journey? We'd be talking about what, 9-10 months of veg? Is that a thing? I could either do the final up-pot into the 7gal smart pots or the larger plastic one that did fine by Blue 2.

I'd be topping and supercropping to keep it from getting too tall during the winter so I could move it into the shed at night.

Any feedback on this crazy idea would be appreciated! :thanks:

Yes. You could totally do that. At that point I would just make thw shed your veg station though.
To be honest, you would probably end up in at least 10g pots before they went out for the summer....throw those into a 100gal and your cooking with gas, scratch that, jet fuel.

It's definitely doable.

Can't make the shed the veg station as it serves too many other purposes. So I schlep the plants morning and night! Vegging for that long doesn't pose any problems for the plant itself? I mean it isn't genetically designed for that.

Hmm...100gal pot. I think I'd have the same problem with the neighbors as LED! A 10 gallon I could swing though as long as I'm not moving it ;)

People keep mom's in veg forever. Just so they can pull clones.

I think you would run into the problem of having to move the plants too much. Also keeping her in that small of a pot, you'd have to water a lot. A lot a lot.

If you up potted solo-1gal-3gal-5gal-7gal-10gal
You might actually be able to stay it out....hmmmm

I don't mind watering and repotting so that's no deterrent. I think I'm going to give it a shot, especially since this auto-grow is not keeping my interest at the moment :-0 First have to find out if he has any clones on offer of course!

Absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. And if it gets to be too much.....snip some clones, toss her ass into flower and reload!!!

Ok, just heard back from the clone-man and he hasn't taken any clones from this set (of clones) yet, but he did offer me a plant (told you he was a nice guy!). I turned him down bc they're 3-4 feet tall and I haven't got room for a plant that big yet. He'll be taking clones in the next week or so bc he's getting ready to send these into flower. I told him to let me know so I can watch that process having only seen Jorge Cervantes do it on youtube :)

I will let you know when I get it!

I know I kid using miracle grow (a friend of my son's - an adult, but still a kid to me) and I told him that's not a good idea. He said that's how his dad has always done it and has success. After a recent visit, my son told me he's now doing a side by side comparison!! I was pleased to hear he (kinda) listened to me. I think he's less than 2 months in but I can hardly wait for him to tell me I'm right! ✌

First thing today is light bulbs. It turns out that my fixture is T8 and not T5

And then I looked up the model number, and here are the specs:
• Energy Used 32 Watts
• Color Temperature (Kelvin) 6500
• Brightness (Lumens) 2710

So it looks to me like I've had goddamn grow lights unplugged in the shed the whole frickin' time. No need to have bought all those CFLs and the fixtures and the two-way splitters and the silly tin foil hats! The only downside is that I don't have any 2700K light on them for flowering (like AK 4 would need now), so I may find a way to hang a 2700 CFL on either side of that plant.

Also, any thoughts on whether I should paint that fixture white rather than leaving it the gunmetal grey it is currently?

This is the first I've ever heard about a problem with seedlings and perlite, but could it explain why mine are growing slowly? I upped the % of perlite in my second grow and they are taking their sweet time, which is a problem because they're autos! Not sure which is worse at this point though, slowing them down by transplanting or leaving them alone to sort themselves out. Also, there's not that much perlite (I'll dig down a bit and take pics tomorrow) but since it's new information I wanted to put it in here as something to consider.

I'd absolutely supplement with all of the CFLs if you could. Lol
I'd leave the reflector.

The perlite thing caught me too. I had never heard of it being an issue for seedlings. But if thats a thing, that could be it. I mean, that's literally the only thing g you changed (minus sun time)
 
It really is the only thing different about the soil (beside washing the perlite but I'm sure that made no difference) so it's an interesting point. I'm going to have a dig down tomorrow and see how fluffy it looks in there. I'm sure there aren't any roots I'll be disturbing!

Not paint the reflector? I was sure the answer was going to be yes! Oh well, easier for me.

Ok, that's one vote for leave it grey, one vote for high-gloss white (which I'm not sure I have - might have to be semi-gloss).

Waiting for at least the tie-breaking vote here...

Not all that cold in the shed yet, mid 60's - but the CFLs prob add some heat at the moment. I can always close the window to keep the daytime heat in as well. As it gets colder I will definitely be keeping it closed as it will get into the low 50s at night. Sometimes it's in the low 50s in my house when I wake up in December.
