Grow #2: Outdoor/CFL Auto 420 Blueberry & AK-47 Smart Pots With Dr Earth Soil

Tuesday and I have the most boring plants in the entire 420mag universe! So rather than bore you even further with sprouts that don't look any different than they did one, two, or three days ago, let me tell you about my gnat experience.

I put bowls of apple cider vinegar mixed with a little dish soap into bowls last night and left them in the shed under the CFLs

Here's a shot of all of them under the lights. High-tech, huh?

This morning one bowl no gnats, one bowl had 1 gnat, and this bowl has about 5 or 6. Oh well. Not the result I was hoping for.

So I took them out into their daytime spot and put a small peat pot upside down over the sprouts and sprayed the soil with neem. Then I put on a latex glove and turned over the top inch, spraying as I went. For AK 4 with the pistils I used a small ceramic saucer to shield the flowers from the spray.

I'll do this for a few days and see if it's making a difference.

In the meantime, other growers have much better plants to look at, so that's where I'm headed now, all jealous and shit ;)!

Re: Grow #2 - Outdoor/CFL Auto 420 Blueberry & AK-47 Smart Pots With Dr Earth Soil

Sounds like your taking all the correct steps. I mean, all the steps I would be taking at this point anyway. Just gotta give them a second to get into their groove hopefully the NEEM will work it did the trick for my fungi gnats!

Thanks Them! I'm hoping I don't need to get more complicated than the neem. My first grow was so much better that I'm chalking it up to beginner's luck over anything I did right. Unless growing autos in September and October is just a bad idea. No heat to dry them out (hence the gnats) and no way to give them nutes without being able to water them!

And I have to say that absolutely nothing happens with the CFLs on them. They don't grow at all in there, even though I've got like 200 equivalent watts on them at 2" away for 8 hours/night. If they don't shape up soon I'm going to scrap this grow completely and wait until spring and do the last two auto seeds I have and maybe get a cbd/thc photo and see how I do with that outside.

Ugh. Anyway, I enjoy what you have going on in the tub!

Do you not have any HID or LED lights?
I think you're right. The CFLs are not going to help with your moisture issue.
I also believe I've read somewhere about a top layer of sand for fungus gnats. I'll try and find it.

No HID or LEDs as I'm not an indoor grower (as you can tell by the pic of the lights!). I started the CFLs to supplement the cloudy June skies we get here and kept it up thinking I was aiding in growth. I didn't expect the CFLs to help with the moisture, just to help with the grow!

Thanks! I have read about sand but there are a lot of negatives with sand including holding in moisture and not letting the soil breathe. And it exposing the soil below every time you water. I'll stick with the neem for now as well as letting the plants dry out. After a few more days I hope to have an idea if it's working...

What about a layer of perlite instead of sand?

I use clay pebbles on top helps for pest aeration and protecting roots from damage . Plus keeps too layer a little moister so it doesn't dry out to fast .

Yeah, we share a love for tiny flowering plants! Or at least we both have one ;)

I had 4 over the summer, 1 was a promising producer, even though she was as small as the others. But had to yank her early as u remember...& my ww, 2 B.B. autos, 2 xmas cookies, & 1 last early miss auto. I'd be setting pretty about now dammit!:bongrip::bongrip::bongrip:

Monday and a happy Thanksgiving to my northern neighbors upstairs in Canadia (as my son used to say)...home of Walk off the Earth and many of our 420 growers!

Here's the update for the day. Not much to speak of, except that AK 7's leaves have lifted a bit, though Blue 4 is still pretty sad. Also, I have some tiny flying bugs living in the dirt that neem oil doesn't seem to be handling. Any thoughts? Pic below.

Brown pistils and new white ones as well...

Shed B.B. 4, top pic...looks like what I experienced in past grow, & with Luna. Dampening off is what I decided it was. See at the base of stalk...how thin it gets, it may keel over eventually & need support. Def let it dry out aerate around it as much as possible. I just realized you’re in that cube thingy, so not much you can do to dry it out. Maybe as much direct breeze as she can take. Luna is bouncing back a bit I think, so yours will to my friend!!:thumb: Also, I was able to raise soil level to just below the cotylodons. Helped keep her upright, & I was thinking it might help dry up the moist soil, by putting dry soil on top. Have no idea what, when or why, but something helped Luna back, as well as the 4 I did that too over the summer. They all fell over in dirt, and were dry & pinched looking at the base. A couple of them are also curved like a “j”, when I moved gently, the soil at base of their stalks. They were stunted due to lord knows what, but they all got this same treatment, & all pulled through. So just my 2 cents broskadeen!! Great day!!

I think that perlite and clay won't keep out the fungus gnats though just because they are so tiny and love to crawl under and around anything on top of the soil. They even crawl up through the holes in the bottom of pots (not cloth ones tho!). That's why sand works for gnats as it forms a complete barrier they can't get through. Has too many downsides though so I think I'll be using a lot of neem this grow!

They both were def too wet, so I let it dry out completely. I had the same thought about adding soil to the top but the damn things won't get tall enough to raise level! And I will keep an eye on the stem to see if it gets any thinner too. I read somewhere about using a straw around the stem for support ;)

I wouldn't go with the bulbs unless you can dedicate like 4 to each plant

Even just to supplement the sun when they're young? I just want them to get some growth over night but the sun is the main source of light for them. But if they're no better than the CFLs I'll skip it. When grow 1 was older I had 400w on each plant but that was only when they got wide enough to put two on either side.
