Graytail's Cupwinners in High Brix Soil - 4x4 - 600W HPS - Perpetual

It's time for the weekly update.

I have three plants left in mineralized soil. The two ratty Indian Skunks (Kerala1&2) have gone back to producing calyxes and sugar leaves so I'm letting them grow. They're both wayyyy overdue, but I have the space and I figure there's no sense in lighting up bare floor, so they stay. Kerala2 might still turn into something. Her calyxes still won't swell, but the buds are hard and fat - stuffed with little calyxes - and there's some good frost on the sugar leaves, so maybe there's something inside the buds, too. I took a popcorn bud from the very bottom of Kerala1, the worst one, and got a brix reading of 11/14, so it's not in terrible health, at least. I've harvested an ounce and a half from Kerala1 so far. This is what's left.

The Hawaiian shows slow steady development - I still think she'll finish in the next four weeks - and her brix this week was a steady 13/15. The new growth is nice and green, so I hope she's past her danger phase. Another week will help with the worm poop topdressing too.

I have another Kerala3 in Doc's kit soil, and that's the one that is yellowing a bit. I should see some sort of reaction to the drench, so that will be interesting.

The Jamaican Dreams continue to look delicious, developing some serious frost all over their buds and attached fanleaves. This is much earlier than their mother in mineralized soil.

The SLH reveg looks good. Pretty soon I'll be able to take a couple cuts and try that one again. I have it scheduled for two weeks from now. I should have taken a cut from the first round - it was a great plant to grow.

I transplanted the White Panther and Caramelo into their 6 gallon pots - the root ball had filled the 3 quart pots in less than two weeks.
They got another dusting of root zone at transplant.

On Tuesday, I started three seeds - Ace Panama, Barney's Tangerine Dream, and World of Seeds Wild Thailand. Panama sprouted Thursday and Tangerine on Friday, still waiting for Wild Thai.

The Jamaican cut JD3 is nice and snug in a 3 quart pot, and I potted two of her sister cuts for the heck of it. I have the light, but they'll have to get culled eventually. Just some insurance.

And that's all, folks!

Now that's an UPDATE!

Lol, some of the pics aren't showing up - thought I mighta overloaded it!

Aren't those Jamaican Dreams amazing? Just 17 days since the first pistils!

What happened? I just saw the baby pictures now they disappeared.

Yeah, I was editing, trying to see what might have happened, and when I saved it, the Caramelo pics were gone, too. It's all there, just doesn't show on screen. I reported it, so somebody will fix it. *shrug*

Well at least I got to see them & they look to be doing excellent.

Wild Thailand sprouted overnight! :cheertwo:

For the last several seeds, I've been skipping all the interim steps and planting directly into a moist cup of Doc's soil. I dribble a little bit of water on the soil over the seed once a day when I check it, and so far only one failed to sprout. In the future, I'll probably soak them first - I think that helps them sprout earlier - but otherwise, it looks like I don't need to fool with peat starters. In fact, next time I'll plant the seed into a small wad of peat because it's more uniform than soil and will stay pressed against the seed better. But I'll plant that wad right into the cup with the soil. Has anyone done it that way?

I recommend just using the soil with the Root Zone. You want to colonize the roots with bene's from the get-go.

I soak them for 12-24 hours, depending on how old the seed is.

Moisten the soil, make a hole with a pen, chopstick or pencil about 1/2 inch deep....put in the seed, cover it and wait. Near perfect germination rates this way, never had any sort of problem.

Germinate under bright light and don't use a humidity dome! Humidity is for clones, not seeds. Too much humidity with seeds leads to males, and damping off.

72-74 degrees, 50-60% RH.....bright light.....that's how to do it!

Great info, Doc, thanks!

I've been using a dome with the big spoon hole in the top, but I never had a good reason, so I'll cease. Males, you say ... interesting. And stress causes males, too? Good enough reason for me, even if they're fem seeds. So far, so good with fems - haven't had a male yet.

Have you tried a drop of Tea in the hole? Or perhaps that's redundant ... ?

Congrats on the new bean popping :thumb:. Very interesting bit about the dome leading to more males. I came across a chart in another journal (recent) that says you can identify female seeds by a round volcano shaped crater on the bottom of the seed, along with overall roundness. I have seen this chart even in journals 5+years old, if it were true wouldn't it kind of be 'known' by now?

Heheh, yeah I saw that too, and yes, one might doubt how definitive it is. But the guy was pretty insistant. If I ever find a way to sprout any of my 1000s of bagseeds, maybe I'll check it out.

Thanks jetboy!

Let me know if you need any help with reveg and/or cloning.

Guys, I need some education. I don't understand why my current set of flowering plants are finishing their stretch at 24 inches. I'm not terribly upset about it, because I've come to realize that I'm harvesting too much as it is - I'm going to have to keep my goals focused on quality and not quantity - but I still need to understand how it works.

Why aren't these three stretching? I gave them more veg time than the last batch and they're going to be shorter.

Ok, here's a pic of JD1 and her mother.

JD1 had 60 days of veg and went into 12/12 at 10 inches tall after LST.
Her mother had 30 days of veg and went into 12/12 at 7 inches with no shaping.

The mother finished at 28.5 inches with the central cola. It looks like both the clones will finish at about 26 inches with no central cola.

I was thinking I should veg for 4-5 weeks to get a good sized flowering plant - 10 to 12 inches when I flip. But it's now looking like I might need to go 45+ days to get a three footer in flower. I just don't understand what regulates stretch, I guess. I'm not seeing consistancy. This isn't genetics either - it's the same plant.
