Graytail's 3rd: 4x4, HiBrix, Latest LED Tech, Lots Of Light!

LOL, you say that like it's voluntary. ;) It's my environment. I've always had issues with yellowing fans, partly because I use relatively small pots, partly because I cram 8 plants into a 4x4, partly because my humidity runs too low this time of year ... :cheesygrinsmiley: They fade and yellow, starting a few weeks after the flip, and I pluck them off as they do.

Evenin Gray, 420brother, what ya said there Gray about picking them off as they fade....me too , and as well as picking off any upper canopy, big fans later in bloom...to open up the lower parts for more light. Gray , did ya see what the ZH did after i topped it.....the four mains just shot out horizontally for a good foot and they're still doing it....all the lil branches are filling in the gaps...anyhow have a great night eh!:high-five:

Haven't tried it myself B A R, but the first place I checked was Seedfinder, where they gave it a 5/10 rating and called it "absolutely ordinary", which made me curious about what attracted you to it.
What snatch my attention about 707 Truthband was that it was LA I believe who said The Truth was the bomb and I've smoked Headband with a buddy of mines and it was some of the best weed he's ever shared with me. I figured a cross between the two was 707 Truthband. I guess not. I think I'll just go with The Truth.

GT I end up doing the same with my leaves. They yellow enough to be useless and they go the way of the dodo. I can always count on a trip to your thread to bring me to a calm place. I love the structure of the plants and the beautiful way they bud. I don't know if you are tired of whitefly suggestions but have you tried spinosad? It's a bacterial byproduct and of very low persistence. You have to reapply after a few days because the half life is that short. But in our game that's a great thing as we don't want anything sticking around. It is effective against mites, aphids, whiteflys, fungus gnats, many many different insects. Certified organic. The great thing is that it works against eggs. We all know how much we hate the word eggs in relation to our gardens!

BAR...Headband is generic name for SDxOG. My favorite is Cali's Sour OG, now called 818 Headband. Killer & easy to grow. Truth has been around CA for awhile with good rep. Search Emerald Mountain or Ras-Truth. 707 TB should be a good one. :Namaste:

I just grew a out a 707 truthband. I can tell you it is a nice connoisseur smoke. Kinda like GG4 hashy piney spicy with a hint of diesel. Beautiful plant I believe I even have a picture in my current journal.

Hey GT great update as usual.

Id like to pick your mind for a hot minute there if thats fine.

i noticed something about your techniques, we all know how you end up with that a plant shape like that (cause you showed us in detail)

what i'm wondering right now is why the excessive defol at what seems to be like a specific key timing, if i had to guess it would be 2 to 3 weeks before harvesting that you strip down your plants to the point where only a handful of small fan leaves are left and the rest are small sugar leaves beside the buds.

what is the reasoning behind this ?

I was thinking about this question, and I realized that I have more to say on the subject. The whole defoliation question is always two-sided. Some swear by it and always do it, often timed to the week. Others don't even remove their yellow fans. I'm of the philosophy that green fans should stay.

Once a week I pull all my plants out of the room and look them over good. I pluck any spent fans when I do that - sort of a housekeeping move. At that time, I'll also take a handful of good fans from the edges or the interior - places where they're in the way and not doing much good. Older fans are primarily sugar producers. They're no longer in the hormone loop. So when you pluck a lower fan you don't effect the growth of the plant. You balance the energy-producing ability against the foliage it might be shading. Which would you prefer to get the light? Upper fans are different - they're still in the hormone loop and the plant will respond by producing new growth.

A nice green plant with a full set of healthy fans will always kick the crap out of a defoliated one. The rest is all personal cultivation technique. I wish mine didn't yellow. :cheesygrinsmiley:

But ... there's also the balance between health and stress. Stressed plants will often produce denser buds. So, there's an upside to seeing a plant drop its fans.

Well, that was pretty damned insightful Graytail. I'm glad I decided to stop and see what you were up to. :battingeyelashes:

Like that fat sativa bud Tikal pheno :tokin:

How was the high?

Another week has gone by and it's time for another update! :grinjoint:

Boy it sure is January, isn't it?! Not only is there the post-holiday lull, but around here, the cold death has settled in for good. I've been living here most of my life, and it still makes me wary. These temps are fatal after all. Brrrr! But we had one of those cold flaky snowfalls, so everything glistens in the light. These are the days when a hothouse is therapeutic, y'know? No light deprivation syndrome in this house! :cheesygrinsmiley: And any time I get cold in my bones I can go nestle with the plants in their 80 degree paradise. Yep, it's good for an old man to raise plants in his house.

Rio1 confounded me and refused to get serious about growing nanners, so I'll have to see what Rio2 does and maybe I'll get some pollen from her for Rio3. Maybe. This is a damned nice cross! I'd sure like to preserve the genetics. At any rate - she's done. I let her go 10 weeks and I need the room, and her buds are dense and hard and ready for harvest. She actually looks pretty nice under all those whiteflies. I get some pics of the trimmed buds.

Tikal outplayed me with a slick head fake. Last week she looked like she was going to finish ... this week she's chuckling at me as she pulls away. We're at 14 weeks now, it'll take Rio1 a few days to dry, so I'll decide in another four days or so. At this point it's beyond rational - I'm just interested to see what happens. The foxtailing is getting kinda unmanageable, but I think yield is gonna be good. :cheesygrinsmiley: It'd be better to grow this one with a diminishing day for the last few weeks.

CarnivalB is going to finish next week right on schedule with some very nice buds. These might be some of the hardest densest colas I've grown. I have a pair of these in veg and it's going to be fun to train them now that I've seen the pheno. I topped them this week and they didn't skip a beat.

Taskenti just finished her Cat drenches and she's pale but not getting any worse. I haven't used WayAhead yet - would this be a good time or not?

You notice how Grieg1 is pale on one side? I think that's part of the fading - lotsa light. I need more humidity and CO2 would be nice. I think that's also what cooked CarnivalB - sure, yoo betcha, spray 'em with Brix in desert dryness at mid-day. What's wrong with that idea? :hmmmm:

Freddy's Best finally made it to bloom! I trimmed up her skirt after I took pics and got a half dozen healthy cuts. We'll see if I can get 'em rooted in this environment.

CarnA1 is going to need a couple more weeks of training, I'm afraid. I've been bending stems over and keeping her low, trying for some side shoots to take off on their own. Another week should get results and then I'll fatten her up another week.

Another wonderful update, GT! :thumb:

Ahhhh Graytail. :battingeyelashes:  Such a treat!

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that your plants are now running longer, growing taller and building thicker, denser buds. Freddie's Best is looking luscious at 111 days, and I'm excited that it's finally going into the bloom tent. I'm looking forward to seeing what this one does once she hits that space. It's like you slipped into some crazy evolutionary wharp and changed all the rules. :laughtwo:

Does the wash clear the white flies off easily? You have a wealth of them to be sure and those sticky colas have to be harboring more than you care to have to remove. Just curious about that. I can see how it might be advantageous to skim the bug carcasses off the surface of the first bucket at some point in the washing process. I hope to avoid them or gnats going forward. I have enough to challenge myself with the thrips awaitin' my return.

No easy way to get the humidity levels up? It's crazy that I'm in an actual desert environment now and with the El Niño rains it's more humid here than there.

I was reading your comments about the warmth and light of your grow spaces and imagining having Llama's space with its 12' ceilings at this time of the year. I wonder what he does for humidity? Hmmm.... I haven't been there for a couple days. I'll have to ask him tomorrow.

I have to laugh at the way that Tikal has figured out how to keep you from chopping her. Hahaha! It's like she's playing a game with you, isn't it? I love foxtailing. It's one of the things that attracts me to Pot Chimp's grows.

I can smell that Carnival you're getting ready to chop through the digital field Graytail. Makes my mouth water just thinking about my own buds curing. They were so dense they were like rocks when I cut her down, so just imagine...... I'm going to toss some in the oven to decarb as soon as I walk through the door and get completely wasted on more while the brownies bake. Then I'm going to plant my last seed and learn to successfully clone. :laughtwo:

Thank you for a wonderful ending to the day. I think I can sleep soundly now.

GT..Awesome update!
