Grandpa's Second Try - Come Join Us!

Well now.... seems a package from afar may land in your world tomorrow. I guess the time has come to get off my ass and do this enormous post.
Honestly, I'm not looking forward to all this writing and I'm gonna try splitting it up some delivering words as you need them. Plus, with temps breaking records down here, my world has exploded... like a whole bunch.... and it sucks. But after a busy day, a bit of writing allows one to settle and focus some.
Fortunately, the wheels in Tead's personal little garden are all rotating as needed and I was able to keep things warm in there... so at least that's workin for me.

But enough about me.

Your package is a 12" long, 6" wide piece of PVC. There's an orange cap on each end. The caps are softer and thinner plastic. Technically, they're called "pressure test caps" and are designed to be used to test a system by holding back exactly 40 p.s.i.
There will be lots of tape holding the caps on. Remove all tape.
Next is a bit of a tricky part. You'll have to get one of the pressure test caps off. It might not seem hard, but it's complicated by the fact that the tube is filled with perlite. If you open it sideways, you'll have an enormous mess on your hands. Hmmmm.... on the other hand, it could be funny, and I'm that evil, so whatever. Anyway, if you put the end of the tube in some warm water and heat the cap a bit, it will come off much easier. I do this when I put them together too... makes the caps much easier to get on or off.
You only need to remove one cap. The bottom cap is closest to the 1/4 inch "hempy hole". Leave the bottom cap in place and take off the top cap. Again... remember to do it upright.
Remove everything except the perlite. The should be a smaller 2 inch hempy cloner and a few New Orleans trinkets at the top of the pot.

You should be left with a tube full of perlite. The tube has a drain hole down low... the "hempy" hole. It also has 4 holes around the top. The 4 holes are for support wires should you find you need them. I use scrap electrical wire pieces (Romex) as supports for plants when needed, tho I tend to avoid gangly sativas.

I sent 2 loads of Osmocote plus along. You'll have to dump the perlite out into something that can easily hold 6 liters. I considered putting it in before shipment, but was concerned about settling. Dump the perlite out and split one of the Osmocote plus loads up into about 6 even piles (or whatever works for you). Put about an inch of perlite into the bottom of the tube and evenly sprinkle in about half of one of your osmocote piles. Now fill the tube up to the hempy hole with perlite and evenly sprinkle in the second half of your first pile.
From here, it gets a touch loose. There's not so much a right or wrong. Try to layer the Osmo thru the tube evenly using one of those 5 remaining piles at 5 different levels up the tube. I try to keep the top one tenth of the pot free of the osmocote so that the freshly planted roots don't get burned. You may want to add a touch of perlite to the tube to get you about 1 inch below the top.

Now we need to water it in. Put it wherever you can run gallons of water thru it and not worry about the runoff. I might suggest your bathtub... or your back yard... whatever works baby. Run lot of water thru it as you use a toothpick or other small stick to clear the hempy hole as perlite clogs it. The idea here is to run tons of water thru flushing the perlite dust out of the mix. Flush the crap out of it. Keep the hole open and flowing freely. Don't let it over-spill the top.
I might expect you to use something in the neighborhood of 5 to 10 (or more) gallons for this process. Having said that, there is no such thing as too much here.

Now you're ready for a plant. What's the plan? Seeds? Clones? I bet seeds. I'd suggest you use whatever process has worked for you previously. You can sprout seeds in the hempy cloner I included. Just fill it with perlite and 3 balls of Osmocote Plus, water it in, and plant a seed about 2 in down. Then cover with a plastic baggie and use the included hippie hair band to hold the plastic bag in place. You can even blow in the hempy hole and inflate the bag. Once your sprout breaks grown and get some growing on, you can open her up and proceed with daily waterings untill you're ready to sink the sprout into it's home.

I can't begin to imagine what I've missed here.... I'm sure we'll stumble along fine. It's life, not rocket science.

Love what you did bro. Perfect explanation . He's bound to succeed now. Glad we will be able to follow along. @Tead
When starting seeds In perlite do they start a little slower than potting mix ? My first attempt is going a little slow imo.

That's awesome Tead! There ya go Grandpa you're all set. Have you decided on a strain yet?
I haven't quite decided on the strains yet. I am sure one is going to be blueberry kush. Not sure about the other photo or the auto just yet.

Wow! That was a lot of writing for sure. Wonderful detail so that I can picture it in my head as you went step by step. One question that occurred to me is how the osmocote is formulated. It sounds like it is either powder or granulated. I may be way off base, though.

Their granules about the size of regular sized perlite not the chunky type.

Blueberry Kush is devine Grandpa, you will have terpenes that is an Anti-oxidant. Blueberries considered one of the best natural medicines for your body especially your brain. Kush will give Kelley some DiverD relief and you both will benefit from the relaxation you will receive from this Indica. Great choice.

I can't help but want you to do an Auto, you have great people to help you here, you can get one grow under your belt before the photo will dominate in size, cause hopefully she'll be bushy, and you'll have bud sooner than later. But it's up to you, I'm soooo excited, I can't wait!

Osmocote Plus is a hard shelled candy of a nutrient with a gooey inner core. The goo inside moves thru the outer shell via osmosis, thus the name.
Been a staple in soil gardens for years and most potting mixes include some. Implementation in a hydro environment is drawing outside the lines a touch.
Technically, the little balls are called "prills". Feel 'em up... get to know 'em. They're all bumpy and irregular. Same with the bucket and perlite... get touchy feely.

Perlite alone is a sterile medium with noting in it for the babies to snack on. In and osmo grow, I toss about 3 prills of the osmo into my little seeding hempy pots.

Ok I did that however not directly under the seedling I see my error .

Hey gramps how were you gonna do the kind soil and coco loco? Looks like you are all set to go with the hempy side of things!
The Kind soil will be used for the other photo, and at the bottom of the auto. The CL will be used for the auto on top of the Kind. This way I get a good cross-section between the two with photos. With the auto, I want to see how well they do with the CL on top, and then have the roots get into the Kind, to hopefully give her a boost when it's time to start flowering. That's the plan I have in my head, anyhow.. 😁

Ummmm... and auto has been planned already. What we are doing, is basically comparing the results of using hempy and Kind soil for one photo plant each. And then an Auto using theCL with a bit of Kind soil at the bottom.

I keep meaning to mention.... if you find the PVC hempy tubes to be to large or ungainly, one can really easily do a good hempy in a 2 liter soda bottle. It's shockingly effective and a great selection for a small footprint garden.
Hopefully will know today. It did not arrive yesterday. I'm sure it will be fine, however. I do like the idea of the two liter bottles as well.
