Grandpa's Second Try - Come Join Us!

Yep. I would definitely hold off. You never hear problems of under watering. Only hear problems of over watering.
Spot on!

The leaves will tell you and so will the soil.
You're totally on the right track with your thinking Gramps!! Let those roots fill up the cup!!!

Hi KJ, I would just like to take a moment to say...Thanks for keeping the flow of communication open and I was able to teach Toasty the difference in methods. I would like to extend the same invitation to you KJ. That if you'd like to make dosing oil one day, I would be happy to teach you and share my knowledge with you. I would like to encourage you to keep going...

Hi Grandpa, what a lovely day to talk about my favourite subject in the world right now, OIL! Wait, lemme get my dose ready, okay, there, I am ready to help in anyway I can.

Now before we start, I have never made tincture, and my rule I make to myself is to NEVER comment on something I don't have first hand experience about. But that motivates me to find the people who DO. I will post what info I have mined. Then you can ask questions about it, and we'll collectively help you. This is where your fan club gets to chime in for you. YES, I'm a fan! ;)

Please PW, Therma and others who have made tincture, please chime in so that we can give Grandpa the best possible advice.

(do correct me if I'm wrong)

Recipe from Pennywise -

"Tincture –

Isopropyl alcohol would probably be best to work with, Butane can be very dangerous. Basically put your trim/buds in a freezer also put your bottle of alcohol and a couple of empty jars in the freezer. Once every is frozen or as cold as it will get put your cannabis in a jar and fill with enough alcohol to cover. Swirl the mixture for roughly 60-90 seconds then strain through cheesecloth or coffee filter into a pyrex baking pan. Now use a hot plate to heat the alcohol to its evaporation point. It will bubble up some and when the bubbles stop its ready to scrape out of your pyrex onto parchment paper. I normally decarb my cannabis first."

"Tincture

If you want to make tincture, I strongly recommend that you use 190-proof alcohol ("Everclear" or whatever brand you can find). You can use 151-proof if that's all that's available in your area, but that's as low as I'd go for a good product. The downside of high-proof alcohol is that evaporates really fast (which is no big deal--it just make the medicine more concentrated) and it's super runny so it can leak past seals in the bottles you put it in, so make sure to keep the bottle upright until you're sure it has good seals. Keeping the tincture in the freezer will limit evaporation from the bottle.

After you decarb, basically you just pour the alcohol over the herb and let it sit while the ethanol dissolves the THC and other goodies. The longer you let it sit, the better the extraction, but I think a week is about enough. Some people put it in the freezer. I don't. Filter through a coffee filter and you're done. I usually do a "second wash" of the extracted herb by adding more alcohol and letting it sit. The first extraction tends to be a beautiful deep red-brown. The second wash will pick up more chlorophyll and be greenish (and of course weaker).

Fresh harvest oil is top of the line, that is the best way to go. I'm going to start posting help with ingredient lists for you in your thread, in preparation of the best oil you could ever make with your own hands. K, now I'm pumped again. Oh, that may be the oil too...hahaha

..sounds awesome again appreciate all the support and love .

Thanks g2h! I'm honestly only well versed in bho ( butane hash oil)

I will let others chime in on the tincture as I am not proficient in that field. And be sure to take notes on your EVOO tips . I don't know if you saw your post I quoted on the fresh oil harvest ( or if I just missed it) but I know I would love to learn more on the subject if you are willing to share :)

Thank you to everyone who responded to my last question. I am really glad that my thought process was correct. That will get placed in the permanent memory bank, and I'll hope it stays there. LOL
GH...WOW! That info is awesome! Sounds very easy to do. I would lean toward the Everclear instead of the isopropyl. Reason being, the Everclear is meant to be ingested, the isopropyl is not. It's in fact, not good at all to be put into someone's body, regardless. I would think if you didn't get it all evaporated, it wouldn't be safe to ingest. So, I would stick with something that is meant to be placed in your body. Probably over cautious, and something a noob would think, but there it is. Thank you for taking the time to research and post that. I will definitely give it a try when we have a harvest.
Dabber...i'll check into the hair straightener and parchment process. It might be a good way for us as well. The more methods, the merrier. 😁

So GH, if I'm reading the instructions using the Everclear, correctly, you do two runs using the same dicarbed herb, then you have the choice of mixing them or keeping them separately., depending on how potent you want it to be.
PW... can Everclear be substituted for the isopropyl alcohol? If so, after swishing the liquid around, how long do you store it before filtering, and is it best kept in the freezer or out of the freezer? I'm sure it should be stored in a cool place, but should it be dark or is some light acceptable? Last question for now... Any idea of its shelf life?

Hi Grandpa,

Here is my juice recipe I have created to use my leaves throughout my grow.
This fruit blend is smoothie texture and is so yummy. Especially for fussy food eaters like me.
I have written the instructions but I'll add pics for Kelley to see.

You are creating a super food drink with pulp, this is essential for Kelley to treat her DiverD. I have had that since 2008, it doesn't go away. She needs as much green, veggies and leaves to battle her gut. If we have bad guts, it takes longer to heal. We essentially have to heal our guts first in order for the body to start sending compounds to other parts of the body. This would be so good for her, she can modify, but cutting is labour intensive. I just sit down first and get prep ready.

You want to pack your blender with soft stuff on the bottom and hard stuff up top, gently pushing it down. If it gets to thick in the blender add juice to soften it down. I do it in batches, and fill up the cups as I go. I hope you love it.

I use this green juice as a shotglass chaser to oil.
I freeze half of it, lasts months in the freezer, in individual reusable plastic cups with tight lids (dollarstore).
It makes me about 10-12 big cups of juice/fruit blend.
Take cup out of the freezer 24 hours before you need the juice.
Keep it stirred and chilled, just like our lifestyle.-

Ingredients for my Green Juice Recipe:

Wash everything…

Up to 15 Prefrozen or FRESH Fan leaves
 (NO DECARB)

1 bunch of spinach - include all

1 bunch of kale
 - include all
1 whole pineapple cored (had to buy packed PA when it’s not in season)

1 lemon – cut quarters and pealed

1 sm slice of ginger root

5 apples
 - sliced
8 oranges – cut first then peeled (or it gets bitter)

1 cup of Orange juice
1 cup of
Whatever juice you want to add.

It tastes very sweet and no bitter residue in your mouth. It makes me feel like I can do anything in life.

Visuals for Kelley...feel free to ask questions...;)

Isopropyl for quick wash is kept in the freezer along with your decarbed cannabis. That way water in the plant remains frozen while the cannabis oil is stripped from the material. You could use everclear instead of 91-99% isopropyl. The iso will evaporate completely from the oil with a little heat. Everclear will leave some water in the oil which you will have to use slightly higher temps to remove.

I there this is Kelley. Thank you so much. Can I leave out the pineapple? I am allergic to them? I also have severe acid reflux and IBS D. One needs fiber and one is no fiber. I will give it a try and see hiw acid refux with the fruit. Thanks again!!

Yes, take out pineapple, but can you substitute with mango maybe? No biggie just add something sweet in it's place;)

I only recommend it as a shot because it's a super food, not good to have large doses at once when you start if you have a sensitive gut. You work up to it.

And maybe have it with a meal, it will help digestion. Go for a walk after if you want too.

You're welcome K,

I will be back to answer your question Grandpa tomorrow. ;)

Report time...
All three girls were showing signs of wilting, so we gave all 3 a drink to run off. The water was pHed to 6.8. It came out of Elsa at six point 6 + out of Emma at 6.5. It came out of Jaws at 7.2! Problem there? I really don't think so as she still looks healthy and is growing. Anything we should be doing or looking for proactively?

You shouldn't need to water too much with Jaws. Especially at seedling.
Again, your intuition is on point.

K.I.S.S.
Keep it simple stupid.
My dad told me this growing up, I never truly wrapped my head around it until I got older. I overthink, overthinking!
Growing cannabis is the perfect example of where to K.I.S.S.

Good job Gramps

IT...we will surely keep our eye out for that dude thanks for the heads up. :thumb:
BW...all we are doing is Peyton attention to them, and responding to what they are trying to tell us. I think I have finally learned that they speak louder than any schedules. This seed to harvest soil should help us out an awful lot! So, simple is the best and easiest way. Not to mention, I got all of you awesome people to help out!

We checked on the girls earlier today, as I want to get a baseline on the temps and the humidity comparison between just after the lights come on and just before they go out. So, the readings for this morning are...
Temp = 81°
rH = 37%
Kelley says they look happy now, with no further signs of wilting. Emma and Elsa are also now throwing off a very nice scent. I walked into the room when she was unzipping the 10th, and as soon as we were done with the girls, I went right out and vaped a chamber of some blueberry Haze! Yes, they smell that tasty... Finally!
