GG7's Indoor/Outdoor Grows!

GG7 so do you plan to keep your journal going through the winter or are we getting to the end of this one?
I sure hope you could find a way to keep going. I know (and probably speak for everyone here) it would be hard to wait until next springish to see you journaling again.

Thanks as always
:peace: and may your weed be PM free!

Hey MS!

Thanks for stopping by! I appreciate the kind words and encouragement to keep this thing going. I've been thinking about that very thing lately and I decided for now to continue updating it even after the big outdoor harvest next month. The last time I suggested that I may close this journal down, I received so many PMs and public posts urging me to continue that I know that my journal is enjoyed by a lot of 420 members, so don't worry about me completely retiring this journal for a long time to come! :thumb:

Obviously there won't be anything close to the same amount of action going on during the winter months cause, well, there isn't much action going on around here during the winter! :laughtwo:

But since it seems that everyone enjoys reading my updates, I see no reason to stop. There will just be less frequent updates and such.

However... ;)

There is something that I have been working on for the last several weeks that may change the updating frequency to a reasonable degree. Since it hasn't been finalized yet, I don't want to jinx it by giving too much away! I can say that it involves yours truly teaming up with a well respected seed bank, some of their exciting new strains, and some others that this group is well known for creating.

Can you guess what this might be? If you can guess, I will tell you more! I should be able to make an announcement about this in the next few days if all goes well.

Budman... Don't give it away! :laughtwo:

:thumb: that is really GREAT news :thumb:
I have a guess, but don't want to post if you want it PMd or public....

I am very curious as this seems to have you in a very good mood :)

I PMed you the details! ;) I could probably make the announcement now, but I would prefer to have the deal closed before I let the cat out of the bag! Hopefully in the next couple of days I will be able to post all the details in this public forum! :thumb:

Sure! Tell everyone but me! That's not fair! I wanna be on another team and I'm telling mom when we get home! It's not polite to tell secrets! I want my ball back!

Hee hee!

Well, if you can keep a secret, I will PM you the details that I sent to MS! ;)

I know its kind of silly to be holding back, but I don't want to make the official announcement until the deal is officialy closed. I don't want to have to retract the whole thing if for some reason it all falls through! That would be embarassing.

Can only like once so I had to quote this so I could put this in

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

my sides hurt from laughing so much, thank you for that! :)

Feel free to wait till things are final....But, it's pretty cool that my being a crybaby worked! :thumb:

I'm gonna try that tactic out in real life and see what happens! :)

How long have you been using the 100% Coco in Air Pots? Are these indoors? Just wondering if you concur with Ganja about the water holding properties not being an issue with Air Pots, even indoors when you have far less Evapotranspiration going on.

Cheers and good to see you again! :thumb:

Sup GG7! It has been a month now using the airpots with coco coir and some hydroton. Mix ratio: 80% coco, 10% hydroton at the bottom, and 10% more at the top. Works great the plants are exploding. Also use them in 2L bottles hempy. Yes, they hold water very well in airpots even with the holes on the side it does not affect the water storage too much. I placed some tray under to hold the run off water. Like a small reservoir, the roots will search for it keeping the plant alive up to 5 days without watering. I don't think I'll go back to soil. Finishing up the scrog (grew in 3gal container with soil) and that will be it, lol.

Hey Twelve!

Thats good to know! I had been tossing around the idea of going back to Coco next season with the Air Pots cause of what Ganja had said about it working really well in those, and that the concerns about poor drainage and bottom saturation that I encountered with the stuff in some of my conventional 5 gallon pots would not be an issue with these because of the air holes and because of the way the roots get guided to the sides and do not suffer any ill effects from potential saturation.

I never had any issues with Coco as long as the pot was outside, but when I would bring a batch into the bathroom grow room to start them flowering, the lack of comparable light energy and evapotranspiration started to cause me some soil souring problems. It was mainly because the stuff is so damned good at holding water. Too good in the case of the indoor grows and the fact that there were so many hours of darkness. Once I brought them back outside to finish, the issues resolved themselves.

This season I moved away from 100% Coco and started going with a 50/50 mix of Coco and Hyponex and later Happy Frog and Ocean Forest. Later, I dropped the Coco altogether and just started using Happy Frog and Ocean Forest together in a 50/50 mix.

What brand of Coco are you using again? What do you pay for a 2.5 cu ft bag? What is Hydroton? Whats the deal there? Give me some Features and Benefits Dude!! ?? :laughtwo: :)

Only Coco I can get up here is Black Gold Waterhold Cocoblend. It is the only brand of Coco that the nursery in the closest town sells. I do get down to Sacramento, Madera and/or Fresno from time to time, so if you have another brand that is cheaper or perhaps better, maybe I will pick some up next time I get off the mountain and down into the Central Valley! :thumb:

Either way, I can really see how well Coco would work in the Air Pots. It packs great, allows for a nice dense pack and would obviously not suffer from any side hole leakage. Not to mention the Pearlite in the Happy Frog and Ocean Forest often clogs the side holes. I still think a root could make it through those same holes, but obviously, Coco wouldn't obstruct them at all.

Thanks in advance for more info!

I've heard nothing but GREAT things about coco and I've been strongly considering switching, too. It will probably be the next medium I use in the waterfarms, but I'm stick with the perlite/vermiculite hempys, for now, even though I hear coir works well in them, too! I guess an added benefit is a high P content that helps during flower.

Yeah 12, what size, coarse, medium or fine. I've got fine and don't see how it could possibly work.:thankyou:

After some research on quality and price I went with Botanicare 5 kg coco coir block (2.5cu) for $14 dollars (usd) here at the local store. The store clerk offered the ready coco in a bag, basically less coco and higher price, no thanks, haha. There are also great deals on ordering in bulk on ebay if your local store does not carry this specific coco. No I don't work for Botanicare, hehe but check out the products info.

  • Each compressed 5 kg. bale yield about 65-70 liters (2.5cu) of fiber media once 3 gallons of water is added to expand the compressed fibers. To my experience it takes about 5-7 gal of water to soften and expand the block.
  • Coconut fibers are 3/4" double-sieved long fibers to reduce dust and give ample space within the mix. It has excellent drainage properties and can be used over a longer period of time than coir fiber with shorter fibers. With longer fibers and reduced dust, growers will experience an optimal air to water ratio, which is vital for strong root development.
  • Aged 18-24 months and fully decomposed to ensure no ph or E.C. drifts.
  • Exposed to rain water from (3) monsoon seasons to naturally rinse harmful salt from the fibers.
  • Provides excellent air space (30%) at the root zone.
  • Holds water and nutrients without dramatically lowering the pH.
  • Slightly acidic: pH ranges from 5.2 to 6.8 pH.

I like the fact that organic nutrients can be use. Will grow with organic once I finish the 2-parts from BPN. So far they are loving it both in airpots and hempy. The coco coir is very light so judging if the plant needs watering with the liff method is dead on.

For the use of hydroton it's to hold in moisture for the coco longer, reduce evaporation, for decorations, and help prevent channeling when I water the top layer. Also add some at the bottom to prevent coco lost from the run offs after each watering session. Especially the first few weeks of plants development, not enough roots to hold it in like a net. The red color of hydrotons help determined how much green is covered, visually measuring vegitative growth. The usage of hydroton idea came from OMM for soil. The grow medium has changed from soil to coco for me, still utilize the hydrotons remain the same based on the above mentioned features. Hope I've addressed your questions GG7 and OG!

Thanks Twelve! :thumb:

I will check to see if the Nursery in town sells those blocks. I never thought to ask them.

Do you have a good online source?
