First Grow, Deep Water Culture, Northern Lights, Pics

Well, looking to the roots they are doing great. Baby looks like she is paying more attention to growing root then growing greeen and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Problem child may just be a late bloomer (pun intended). She'll get there.

This is like trying to judge what the kids will look like as adults at 5 years old! LOL!

You handle the plants like you handle the young kids. You give them a good well rounded environment. let them do their thing and if something happens to them you fix them any way and everyway you can.

LOL... yeah, I'm making bets with someone helping me on who is going to be biggest.

I'm trying my best to help my girls without growing up for them, so to speak. :)

I have a thread here in DWC/Deep Water Culture on TOPPING that would help you.

Thanks, Roseman. Read that thread and realized Baby was ready for a topping too, so I let her have it. I decided to FIM them instead of top.

in my opinion i would let the nodes you know your going to keep grow out another day or so. if you top to early youll stunt the plant and it takes them longer to develop the branches.

Does Fimming vs. Topping having any affect on the possibility of stunting them?

what does the grow room look like is there air being circulated properly?
22 days old plants? I would hold off on the nutes, the leaf tips being dryed and crispy not such a great sign.
I'm sorry if this seems too direct but I need to say what will help you out in the long run.
whats ur Breakdown
Strain
PPM
PH
RES consumption per day
Temp
What is ur PPM b4 u add drank H2O and then Whats after u add H2O and PH up/Down?
As for the algae growing on your feeder tubes there must be light getting in your Res tank, I never understood why Stealth H decided to make a res container out of a light translucent material this is one of my main reasons to make my exact duplicate of there product but using a black tote from Ikea ($3).
Anyways I would wrap a darker the better towel around ur Res container and Duck tape it in place.
Yes I know SH buyers will say "I never had algae issues with my SH system" thats not the case here this root rot is from algae and a combination of too high res temps (even though its not listed, wrap will help block heat a lil aswell)
I sincerely hope the best but I'm not saying anything drastic so its not far fetched to try out Not for me but for the life's you are nurturing over.

I WANT direct. My main purpose for posting pictures and updates on my girls is to get direct criticism. I want what is best for them, so if I'm overlooking something that could be hurting them, I definitely want to know about it.

The leaf tips got crispy like that after I wind burnt them with my humidifier output fan on Valentine's day. Is there algae on the feeder tubes? They're not supposed to be clear. They are that blue translucent color tubes. I don't see any... but like I said, if I am overlooking something, let me know.

Here's my breakdown:
Northern Lights
PPM = 623 (I did a drain and replenish yesterday and added half a pack of nutes.)
Res consumption per day = 1/4-1/2 gallon (pure estimation from seeing how much it goes down from the 6 gallon mark I put in there)
Temp in closet = 82-86
I don't have PPM for before and after adding drank H2O because they haven't been drinking THAT much, so I haven't been adding more every day. (More like every other day.) And when I do that, I've just been checking it after. I'll start checking it before and after though.

I got an aquarium temperature strip and my res is high. (I was just feeling the water with my hand before to check temp.) I'll duct tape the shit out of it later today to try to bring it down and block out the light.

Here is what my closet looks like. The fan is always pointed that way (on low) because it makes them jitter if I point it at them. Humidifier stays in that position as well because when I put it in the middle of the box, it leaks because of the angle it's at. (What can I expect for $25?) I usually leave the door cracked about 3 inches to bring in some air from outside the closet. In the room, I have a ceiling fan on high to circulate the air out here.

i like topping, usualy ill pick 6 to 8 branches i know i want to keep minus the bottom set i cut off and top above that.

Well... been a few days since I gave an update on them and a lot has happened. All three have been FIM'd and I'm already seeing the growth. Girls were doing well but today I found algae in the tank. I guess it started before I had the duct tape on there after the last drain and replenish. So I followed the 8 step remedy on them, drained and replenished. I took the feeder tubes and pump out to cut down on the chances of it happening again and because they all have roots in the water. After the drain and replenish, I fed them with a 3/4 dose of nutes. The temperature in the tank has come down significantly. It's at 72 now. I have a box fan and the humidifier directed at the sides of the tank.

Ghetto, duct taped tank:

Lookin' good Sadaliz! I am virtually at the stage as you, my temps are too high as well. Time to break out the duct tape.....lol

Thanks, Blitty! Best to get that shit under control quick. Go crazy with the duct tape, not only does it insulate the reservoir, it blocks light out. :goodluck:

You need to get those res temps down """ 65-70 degrees oxygen is best
at 65 anything over 70 your asking for trouble as soon as the roots hit the water get that pump out of there alot of people use ice bottles to keep their
water temps down :goodluck:

Sadalix, I was having the same issues with the res running at 76, i alreaddy had reflective tape on the the top, and wrapped it in plastic bags with tape and all, but temps were still 76. After pointing my fan directly at the res, the temps went down to 72, just like you! I also blocked out the lights from hitting my air pump, and put cloths on the top of the res, where I could fit them. I'm working on my algae issue now with a full res change and clean, added a Tbls of H2O2 per gallon of water, and PH'd it to 5. It goes up to about 6.5 every 12 hours, so I re-PH it. I am planning on complete res change and cleaning every 2 days until the algae goes away. Hope you all the best!

Sounds like a great plan and great solution to me!

I'm so glad that you over came your issues with temp and light!
At the end there wount be anything left but, Cockroaches and ur Ducktape infused grow tote. heh
GREAT JOB!!!

Sorry about the lack of update recently. I've been super busy. I battled the algae for about a week, trying different things after I duct taped the tank. They didn't care for the feeder tubes being removed and got droopy on me and their roots dried out. For a while, they were really hurting there.

So during my last drain and replenish, I went crazy with cleaning it all out. I put the pump in a mix of hydrogen peroxide and water and turned it on for about 20 minutes to kill the algae and everything built up in there. Then, I rinsed the pump thoroughly. I also poured some hydrogen peroxide over the airstones and rinsed them thoroughly. Then, I took some white vinegar and scrubbed the tank with it and gave it a good rinse. Then, I rinsed the roots off gently by dipping them in some clean water, tossing it out and repeating a few times each. The thorough cleaning paid off! On Tuesday, it'll have been a week since I did it all and the algae hasn't come back and my girls are thriving!

Also, since I don't feel comfortable removing the feeder tubes yet, I've been putting bottles of ice in there to bring the res temps down. Got some pics... they're still in recovery mode so don't be too harsh on them.

Starting to look like a jungle in there:

It has been 6 weeks since these ladies were planted. They're kind of small for 6 weeks because the issues I had stunted their growth some but they're definitely taking off now that those issues have been taken care of! Not sure when I'm going to start flowering but I definitely want to bulk them up some more before I do so I probably have at least another week of vegging ahead of me.

This damage showed up on Beast after the drain and replenish yesterday. Not quite sure what is going on :hmmm::

Get that pump and those tubes out of there that will slove lots of problems
i had the same problems with my grow and after the pump came out things went better
I waited to flower till they were at least a foot tall and i should have waited another week or two

You just want the roots to be developed enough and healthy enough to get their nutes as they dangle in the water as sort of the force feed that the pump provides. From what I have seen, the roots are able to make it on thier own easy. I usually pull the pump when they are 3-6" into the water as long as everything else is going ok.

Might very well be a ph fluctuation. You see how those leaves sort of have stripes of burn marks and it's sort of random. That's the sign that ph swings may be the cause. Just some roots are picky and the ones that are get reflected in the leaf that root is "tied" to.
