Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Hello everyone, getting ready to crack some dynasty birds of paradise seeds in my first soil kit and wondering if anyone has advice for obtaining maximum female ratio using kit? I plan to keep 1 gallon pot moist the first 4 weeks rather than allow soil to dry, air humid and cool, t-5 lights, air circulation and filtered air in with power exhaust. Instructions seem to vary a bit starting in solos or 1 gallon pots and the use of trans at 1/4 strength . Also wondering if anyone see's any difference in stretch in veg compared to say coco. I have 7 foot hgt in tent and considering plan B ; start and mom in automated drip coco and take cuts and flower in kit soil.

Germinate the seeds under bright light, mid 70's 50% rH and you'll have your best shot at females.

I do not recommend keeping the soil moist after germination. Let the roots do some work. You'll be rewarded with strong stems, short internodes and a heavy yield if you do it right. Please read the first few pages of "In the Lab."

Hey walleye! We just put 5 birds of paradise into soil yesterday. We used 1.5 gallon so that it would give us a bit more time in the small pots while we sex them. We are mid 70s and 50% humidity. Hoping for a couple females as we "sexed" the seeds. First time running a bunch of regs, so will be interesting.

Doc and other HB'ers. Back in post #12468, I asked about some weirdness with one of my Northern Lights. It was showing very yellow leaves with one or more of the leaflets curved like a Scimitar. Doc thought it might be due to cold temps, some thought nute lock up, others Tobacco Mosaic Virus. I thought maybe it was due to the dirt/root ball falling apart when I transplanted from a dixie to a 1 gal. pot, i.e. stress.

Research on TMV was inconclusive. I kept it isolated to begin with, but as the plants bushed out, it began touching others. There was NO CROSS CONTAMINATION. One poster with a similar plant let it continue on and it produced a somewhat smaller yield than expected. I decided to keep mine to see what would happen.

The pics below are from today - day 48 of 12/12. The buds are forming nicely and getting close to harvest time. Note the extremely yellow leaves - these have been like this from the beginning. It is not due to age. The leave necrosis is coming on strong, but I believe this is due to it being nearly done. Note that one of the branches/colas has little or no involvement. I have two other NLs: One has a couple of weird leaves, the third one is fine.

I pass this on FWIW in the hopes that it will help others.

OK The reason I ask about female ratios was Shiggitys (hope you are ok) notes about the high male ratio with his seeds and he mentioned seedling's dry cycle possibly the cause or just a genetic trait with those particular seeds. That was the only mention of ratios I found so maybe it's nothing. Thanks for reply's . Walleye

Thanks nismo, I'll go with the 1.5 also now so no trans before sexing. You may have saved me some dirt.

medmanmike - this is the second time I've had this and both times it came from roughly the same stock (a variation of Chem D). I'm calling it TMV just to be safe (99% sure) and keeping it away from my other plants:

Just found it today. :(

You cant just remove those leaves and therefore remove the virus? Im asking cuz I think I've seen it once before in one of my grows

Wowzerz! Amazing Doc. I hope I can get my roots that solid sometime soon. I have some clones rooting now but they came from a plant that seemed pretty sickly, did 2 rescue drenches before I gave up on her and the labels on the clones seem somewhat similar. Possible virus....?

It may be better for me to pop some new seeds....?

Doc I seen this on Instagram

So awesome,

Any tips on keeping them that healthy when they get that big

I have been trying to get massive roots before I put them in flower seems once I get to a certain size they fade off

I do rescues they recover slightly but never get back to the fake looking plant, if I upcan then rescue they recover

And get shiny again

If I get a chance I'll grab some pics I am battling this on a couple of plants now prob going to up can them next

time they dry put

Rescue was done on Friday

Another question I have is you posted(I think it was you I can't find the post now)not to top before 5 nodes high and 5

bladed leaves or plants will not produce as well and will have slow metabolism.

Long story short I did top too early before I seen the post and the plants was slow and did not produce well

Will this carry over from gen to gen? I take my clones the same as you and do not keep a mother

Thanks

:Namaste:

posting shit like that has consequences doc:

also what kind of light is that vegged under? i feel like a t5 wont give me stems like that.

i topped doc styles this time and its going well but they look about 1/3 that thick after about 8 weeks under a t5.

fwiw i'm planning to take that t5 out and replace with a 315w cmh.

would more air blowing on them help? i mean i have great air movement but its much more stratified and not particularly windy on my plants.

a light 'breeze' will toughen the stems :)
