Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Epsom's Salts is just crystalline form of Magnesium Sulfate. Most LED growers experience some Mg deficiency in late stages of their grow and even kit growers have had some fade in late bloom (seemingly due to Mg-def to a degree). Top-dressing it is akin to "slow-release", so top-dressing and watering in allows the Mg to dissolve and leech into the grow medium.

Thanks. So Epsom salts instead of Cal/Mag supplement. Thanks. :peace:

Yep. about 1/3 gallon GENTLY down the top, the rest in the saucer.

I agree. At transplant, I want the roots searching for that water which is why I pour a bit down the top and the rest in the tray. I havent had any stress/droop at all after transplant. Between that and scoring the roots, they do very well :)

for a few years now, i have my plants sitting on styrofoam panels, 4 x 8 x 2" thick. they are cheap, and, keep the girls feet from sitting on the cold, concrete, floor. yes. this is something they love. keep their feet warm, and cooler temps, wont hurt them. and, in fact, may give you some nice, blue or purple buds, at that.

Let's talk soil management for a minute.

So I'm in the middle of the veg phase of my first high brix grow, and I'm starting to ponder what I will need to keep the grow going continuously for the time being. As I think I mentioned earlier, I am growing to produce concentrated cannabis oil, and will need approximately 8 oz. of dried bud per month for at least the next four to six months. Not really sure how much I can expect to harvest from 8 plants in 10 gallon pots. The strain breakdown in this 8 plant flower tray is 3 Blue Dream, 3 CBD Critical Cure (indica dom.) and 2 Darkstar (Indica dom.). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can harvest 16 oz. from these 8 plants, which will keep me in oil for the next two months until my next harvest is ready. But I don't want to wait a month while the first grow soil is being recharged. So I will need more soil. My question is how much?

Running some numbers, I believe I remember reading that each bag of Pro-mix will get me about 49 gallons of soil. So the two bags I now have ready to go should take care of me through my first harvest, with 80 gallons for the 8 plants in 10 gallon pots, plus 8 to 12 seedling or clones in 1 gallon pots in the veg tent which will hopefully be timed right so that they are ready to be up potted and put in the flowering tray after the first harvest. So at the time of the harvest I will need another two bags of Pro-mix ready to go. So that's 4 bags total. And at that point in time the first batch will start another month of cooking with more amendments, getting ready for the 2nd reuse of that batch of soil. So I should be able to keep the grow moving along continuously by rotating the 2 2-bag batches of soil, right? And understanding that after 3 or 4 reuses I will need a new batch of soil.

Does this sound reasonable, and are my yield projections reasonable? That's why I want to use 10 gallon pots. I also have decently controlled environmental conditions, and will be running CO2 as well to help with the yield. Also, I am missing anything with my assumptions other than yield. Times to veg and flower about 2 months each seem right? I'm new to growing so not sure what I might be missing.

I greatly appreciate everyone's thoughts on this. It's important I get all of this right, to the extent possible! :thanks:

An airgap of 1 foot or 1 inch of styrofoam insulation will do the trick.

Little things like this and the environment are the main reason my plants come out as well as they do.

I have a bunch of pink fanfold foam insulation lying around. Used it to build R/C airplanes out of. Couple pieces of that under each bin should do the trick. :peace:

i have only 12 plants in bloom, max. i understand, the hydro, which i never have done, gives more fruit. but, bland fruit. soil/soiless is best. thats all i have ever done. the problem with "commercial size" organics, for vegs, is the cost. if we are all demanding organic, we will be met with three times the cost. lots of people, will go hungry. but, on a home sized garden, we can do well. im trying to find out, what tea that is, that docbud was refering to. id like to check it out. thanks for the heads up! i see the last med disp closed in my neighborhood. the state is forcing them out, so it can have all profits to itself. anyone with "active cards" will have their info, shared with city, county, state, etc.

I run perpetually. Usually, not always, but usually I replace a harvested plant with a vegged plant at time of harvest. A true perpetual. No down time in the bloom room at all.

You'll need 3x more soil than plants. Twice as many clones as needed and about 30% more vegged plants than needed. You'll be culling clones and vegged plants all the time this way....but you'll always have soil and plants ready to go.
