Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

@Gaffle-

I would NOT dome a seedling. You can put a dome over a pot/cup until the seed germinates, but keeping them covered after they sprout is a bad idea, IMO. It is very easy to kill them that way and the tykes need air circulation.

RE watering: The first week, or so, is a balancing act. After that, I use the same drench/dry cycles I use for all plants. I just don't let them completely dry out until I'm confident they will take a short dry spell. Frequent spraying of water is not in the instructions and not a good idea.

@aruu-
I went throught the same question about amending large areas of soil for outdoor use. Apparently, when amending soil (whether using Doc's kit or anything else), recommendations only consider the top couple of inches of soil as compared to amending soil in pots where you amend the entire soil depth/volume. The idea is, you can't remove amendments but you will/can add over the years. In large areas, no one expects you to completely mix soil to a depth of 1-2 feet. The top layer will percolate down over time to "amend" the lower layers. I'm currently mixing soil (not HB) for a 2 foot depth. Whether that is a good idea remains to be seen...

That makes much more sense. I figured I was having to mix up amendments for a 1.5ft depth (height of my bed). Maybe i'll just mix peate moss and worm casings in the lower layer. Or maybe i'll buy 4 bales of promix on amazon...we shall see (:

Hey docbud, and anyone else who may have experience with these. I was curious what your thoughts, and/or experiences are with HID cool tubes. In my efforts to gain complete control over my growing environment I now realize I would really benefit from using a cool tube in my flower cabinet. I have read that the Pyrex glass can have some adverse affects on the lumen output as well as blocking some beneficial uv rays. What are your thought on this? If I can't get this cabinet under control I will just have to insulate my cellar and move everything down there :yikes:

I use one and couldn't grow w/o it. Does it lower the output? Probably, but so what? The bulbs have lower output with age regardless. If you keep the tube clean, the reduction is not very significant, IMO (maybe 5%??). If you are worried about it, get a bigger light. It will still run cooler with a cool tube than the next smaller light w/o the tube.

Thanks ShiggityFlip and thank you too Major PITA, Thats what I figured. I was thinking the very small loss would definitely be worth the environment control. I just can't pull enough air through that cab. to cool it off enough. I just wanted to make sure they aren't a total waste.

I used vented HID's for years. Always try to have more light than you need. You don't have to worry so much using bulbs for 2 years if you have massive amounts of light. Keep the lights up high, etc.

I'd use something like CoolTubes without hesitation. But you said something about a basement.....right? Move your grow to the basement! It's a blessing having that large heat sink.

Hello everyone...

I have a question:

3 days ago I topped my plant and prayed with Destress. I screwed up and mixed it at 1oz per qt when it should have been 1/2oz. I didn't worry too much. I figured I couldn't be the only person to have a brain fart like this and not kill their plant.

Well, tonight, I sprayed her first dose of Brix (now half strength twice a week). So 1/2oz per qt.

Everything looks great. So, I take some pictures for my journal, and I notice that there is still spots of Destress all over the undersides of the leafs.

Should I be concerned? Perhaps tomorrow night rinse her well with straight water to get the excess Destress off her?

Actually, I disagree - go ahead and give 'em a good rinse with straight water. I've often seen the same residue on my plants, and if it's more than just a few leaves and tips I'll give 'em a straight water spray. DeStress doesn't really burn like Brix will, though - no real worries one way or the other, in my experience.

Incidentally, I recently saw someone post that their flairisol quit working - both of mine did too. I think they clogged as near as I can tell and the pore is too small to think about cleaning out. But ... my Solo extendable-wand pump sprayer is still working well after 2+ years. And, I discovered that the heads of the 2-quart and 1-quart bottle are the same size. The wand will fit on the smaller bottle. :slide: A 1-quart bottle is so much better for a small garden like mine.

[Edit] Really nice Huck, Shiggity! :thumb:

I have both a Flairosol and a Solo. For me, the Solo droplets are a bit big. I like the mist put off by the Flairosol and I try to rinse it after use. Got at least two months of use out of it and still going strong. They are cheap enough to use them for a month or two and get a new one.

Thanks for the reply docbud! I think the problem with my basement (may be more of a cellar) is that half of it sticks out of the ground. So in the summer it is so hot and humid down there, in winter it is very cold. Your right though it holds in whatever there is. If it gets cold for a week the cellar gets cold and stays cold for about 5 days after regardless the temp outside. I also have landlords that do a lot of gardening outside, the vent for the cellar is about knee high/thigh high and they would be able to hear my ventilation equipment without a doubt. So I'm trying to avoid moving down there. Then again my currentlower cab. is only 18"x18"x5'10". This makes it very hard to find a fixture that will hang in there. I bought the shortest cooltube I could find but I still need to have the pyrex cut down a bit. As you know its get hot in that little cabinet per the reason for a cool tube. I only have and can only fit my one 250 watt HPS in there. How would you deal with the environment in a cellar/basement? there is no heat/air in there I guess I would need to buy a portable heater and a/c unit/ and a dehumidifier? Thanks for your reply doc!
