Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Bloodmeal is for frankenstrains?

I think so!

What I've been doing:

1/8th cup Organic Blood Meal mixed into the final container. Epsom salts added on the top and gently watered in over time. About week 5 of bloom another light top dressing of Blood Meal. I'm not doing Cat Drenches on these.....mostly Transplant.

Foliar spraying with 1/4 oz WayAhead added to Brix.

It's totally working....

My observations so far are:
1. I had a much more controlled stretch in High Brix. So the HB plants ended up shorter by a few inches for each strain (I love that).

2. Before Cat drench I was worried that the HB plants were going to yield less. Then Cat drench happened. Now I see that though the HB plants are shorter across the board, they will yield the same as the taller chem plants. They also have a higher trichome count and the colas are thicker than the chem plants.

3. It takes me 10 minutes to weigh out powdered silica, pk booster, add the 3 nutrients in varying amounts (grow, micro, bloom), then pH with pH down...Sometimes I really dread the chem nute protocol. With DBHBB I just plop a 1.5oz drench and then measure 2.5ml tea with my micropipettor and I am good to go. It is so much easier and faster I can't believe it. Even on those weird days when I had to water both veg and flower and spray a foliar, it still comes out to less time and effort than making the chem nutes.

4. It really all comes down to the trichomes and terpenes period. I like to consider myself a trichome and terpene farmer first, and a bud farmer second. When you are adding all the different chems that you have researched as being good, and combine them into a coctail you really think you are doing something special, and I do feel that I was. But then you do the high brix growing and you realize that you have millions of little minions to do your bidding. They are boosting the plant, adjusting the pH, and giving the chelated elements to the plant. Now I can concentrate on other things, I have more time to chill with the plants, train, gawk, adjust. I am trying my best to follow strict instructions for the kit and I am finding it doesn't exactly work that way. There is a silent communication where my plants are not only telling the microbes what thy want. They are telling me also. Go a day early on the foliar this week, give a little more GE, I still follow the instructions but I lean a bit this way or that. I am thankful that the high brix system allows that to take place.

I look at all the DBHBB grows and I can see the individual personalities of each grower. That's important. I didn't want to adopt a cookie cutter method of growing. And the Kit is not cookie cutter at all. I am actually surprised at how similar my chem and High Brix plants are (though the HB plants are noticeably better). But I think that means my personality and growing style is expressing itself in both chem and HB regimes. Its just that the High Brix method is letting me express myself a little bit more. It feels more like an intuitive extension of myself. I feel more connected to my High Brix plants.

Just wait for the Twister Doc, a 60% sativa that I have kept with a buddy for the last two decades clone only. It is one of the magical Skunk#1 X NL X Haze crosses that were prevalent in the late 80s-90s. Great internode length and very controlled stretch. Super soapy to the touch with ridiculous trichomes. Smells of Citrus, Cat piss, and skunk hash. Super motivating buzz that can keep you on the couch not from couchlock, but from trippiness and sparkly visuals. She also noticeably tightens your cheeks into a smile, like sunshine on your face. You can't get it anymore they stopped offering it 18 years ago or so. My buddy visited and he gave me 3 clones to restock. I gave hime some Huck Kush for his troubles. Twister is the best plant I ever grew and I have all three clones in high brix soil just waiting to go into flower next round. She didnt like the transfer from chem to high brix so I had to give her a rescue drench but you can see from these pictures that she has now adapted to DBHBB soil. Some of the lower leaves have yellow but the new ones are green and lush!

Interesting observations Shig. Always enjoyed watching you grow, so I have looked forward to your honest feedback on the kit. Now for the smoke report, that's what I want to hear from you. Side by side DBHB/chem comparison?

Interesting. I grew frankensteins last round and they came out good, can't wait until we have the frankenstein recipe tuned.

My hunger games grow is the same strains as the high brix. Currently the nutrient regime is

Mbferts vitamin booster 1ml/gal until 4th week post flip
agsil 16H silica, 0.5gm/gal until 4th week post flip
Holland secret nutrients: 2/3 strength of what they list for each week.
Ton of bud PK booster 2nd and 3rd weeks flower
The heavies PK booster last several weeks flower.
Demeter's destiny chelated calcium, magnesium, amino acid supplement (no nitrogen)

Typically the highest ppm I run is around 900ppm during the height of flower.
a small amount of PH down to get to 5.8 (I will have to hide the pH meters when I go all High Brix so I can avoid the rake handle)

Hit the nail on the head. Reps my friend, well put.

I'll just add, I have a few grows under my belt, and a few people who i share what i believe to be my top shelf. Let's just put it this way, I've made snobs out of them. I've grown some nice plants without docs kit. But my best, so far, is kit grown. For every reason you mentioned, and a few of my own.

Heck, i recentlty hit 8z manicured on an auto, in the kit, which i had grown over ten times previously and never trimmed out more than 4z. And it tasted and smelled better than any other.

Hey Doc,
Got your kit the other day and mixed it up. Excited to get started! QQ, should I mix in some tea? I missed that in the instructions.

Thanks!

Another question..I built a garden bed for vegetables and got a bit overzealous. It is 6x3x1.5 approx. so i'm looking at 27 cu feet needed. Do you by chance sell amendments in bulk fashion? And how would you recommend mixing it up / cooking it? Do you think it would be OK to cook the soil in its final home and just leave it empty for a month? Thanks again!

the kit instructions are for a 4x8 (32 sq ft) garden or 6 x 7 galllon pots...

Do you know at what soil depth? My planter is sitting on concrete so i'll have to go as deep as possible. TY in advance Ziggy.

at what soil depth? do you mean how deep a pot or grow space? pots are, IDK 16-20" tall?
picture a 4 x 8 outside..it can be used for that.
Using the kit I grew in little azalea pots..5" tall 5-6" across? a large amount in a small space...9-11 azalea pots fit on my tote cover I used a SWICK to help water and feed the little tykettes ;)
we are here to help you...

get the planter off the concrete. Doc and others have discovered this.
..use a brick, cinder block, wood, couple inches styrofoam....concrete slab..its a big heatsink. :)

Hey guys... I bought Doc's kit, and after a false start, I am now a proud father! This is only my second grow, and my first indoors with the kit. It's a Jock Horror in a 3' X 2' cabinet. I just created my journal with some pictures and information regarding what I've done so far. She is only 3 weeks old. If any one is interested in checking out my grow or following along, my link is in my signature.

:cheertwo:

P.S. Feel free to point out where I'm screwing up also... lol!!! I'm a NEWB

The amendment is/was designed for large outdoor vegetable gardens, so the individual ingredients are sized and blended to percolate down through the soil. It's designed to broadcast/topdress - we've had to adapt the method for indoor pots. :cheesygrinsmiley:

The Kit is ideal for your purposes. :slide:

After reading this thread I would also agree. This is not the straight up cookie cutter, a lot of "own methods" have come out which is great. That being said as a newbie I enjoy SOME of the cookie cutter for the HBK. The 420 HB blog that was made is fantastic. My space is small so the added intuition of members with the increments per soil has helped me immensely.

When I first decided to grow I ended up coming home with a Fox Farm pamphlet from a shop. This had all of the nute timings and what not to last a whole grow. I went to a shop and bought a few materials for this method. I have some rockwool cubes just chillin in basement right now. I have 2 bottles of PH up and down chillin in basement. I have a pack of solo cups chillin in basement. Because of the kit I have skipped all of that and went with the Brix soil and 1 gallon pots. I figure that at some point I will mess with chem plants just because I have not done it yet. I plan on doing a side/side of HB vs chem for my next grow. I am getting WAY ahead of myself as that I just have 2 babies popping up for my first grow (ever), but I gotta make new goals!

As of right now I have 2 seedlings sprouting up. My first pot sprouted last night. I was so pumped when I noticed the seed pushing through, that was quite exhilarating. My second pot had no activity, I was starting to worry a bit. This morning produced a high with no meds being that my second seed has sprouted and throughout the night has surpassed seedling #1. It is go time. I did dome my 1 gallon pots just in case. My environment was good, but I wanted added security to ensure positive results. I have not used transplant yet, just distilled water. My soil from bin was not moist so I resorted to just spraying pots with distilled water. I was nervous about over watering and seed rot. Luckily everything is going according to plan.

Now, I plan on keeping the seeds domed until I have some leaves popping out. Is this cool? Inside the dome I am at 78-73 and 90+ rh. My room itself has been at same overall temps but a rh of 50+, I have a heater keeping a constant temp and a fan to distribute heat. I do not have my inline running yet. My room has a light fixture so right now my LED is not on, but my small CFL is.

As always any comments from you pros is most appreciated. Thx 420 pals!

EDIT : I just wanted to add about my watering. As previously said, there are a lot of individual ideas used in this kit. I was planing on just using distilled water for the time being. I made a decision to not use transplant until leaves are showing. I do want to grow as well and as fast as possible so should I be adding transplant right now, at this young stage?

@Gaffle-

I would NOT dome a seedling. You can put a dome over a pot/cup until the seed germinates, but keeping them covered after they sprout is a bad idea, IMO. It is very easy to kill them that way and the tykes need air circulation.

RE watering: The first week, or so, is a balancing act. After that, I use the same drench/dry cycles I use for all plants. I just don't let them completely dry out until I'm confident they will take a short dry spell. Frequent spraying of water is not in the instructions and not a good idea.

@aruu-
I went throught the same question about amending large areas of soil for outdoor use. Apparently, when amending soil (whether using Doc's kit or anything else), recommendations only consider the top couple of inches of soil as compared to amending soil in pots where you amend the entire soil depth/volume. The idea is, you can't remove amendments but you will/can add over the years. In large areas, no one expects you to completely mix soil to a depth of 1-2 feet. The top layer will percolate down over time to "amend" the lower layers. I'm currently mixing soil (not HB) for a 2 foot depth. Whether that is a good idea remains to be seen...

One more thing about the amendment:

Ideally, you test your existing soil and then the amendment is blended specifically for your soil. :cheesygrinsmiley: In bulk, it isn't a problem - but they don't custom blend small quantities.

Once your soil is standardized, all the drenches and foliars will work as expected. You can't just add Doc's blend to your outside soil - it's blended for ProMix.

Thanks!

Between the amendment, worm castings and the very substantial myco charge already in the Promix, watering with Tea is unnecessary. We've got a massive amount of life in the soil.

We test your soil and blend a custom amendment for that. Some drenches and sprays are different from the Cannabis stuff too....but yes, it is done all the time and I'm happy to help you with it. Email me.

Get the dome off the seedling right now. It's a bad idea. Don't do it.
