Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

50% during bloom?! Won't that lead to PM?

What Duggan said....and the warmer your temps, the higher your daytime humidity must be or the plants will become stressed. I run 50-55% at the moment. High temps about 82 with C02 enrichment. I'll go up as high as 60% if my temps spike at 84 or so, which is what I'm expecting with the new lights.

BTW, I'd wager you have more chance of getting PM at 40%rh and high temps during lights on as 60% with a well controlled environment. The reason being stressed plants are weaker and more susceptible to pests and diseases.

An optimal environment doesn't lead to problems. On the contrary, by focusing on plant health instead of "preventing" a bunch of problems it turns out that the problems are few indeed.

Doc, have you ever used a 'trigger light'? Far-red(infrared) light with peak 730nm used for seconds,
"Edit: by using this technique you can shorten the dark period, thus increasing yield. Since you can squeeze in a few extra hours of light. So instead of a 12\12 schedule you could pull off a 15/9 if you hit it with infrared(730nm) for a few seconds after lights out"

15/9 is a bit much, from what I have seen while researching all this it may result in a veg/flower state. There is still research being done in the effect of blues and the maximum amount of blue hours in a 24 hour period. But it seems like 13/11 light/dark is doable for sure with only positive effects and phenos as if using 13 hours dark. It is also recommended to do this only after the stretch as far red will induce more stretch.

Some are using Rauber methods to have 24/7 photosynthesis by using specific wavelengths but this is beyond me and I haven't seen enough specific Methods on P.A.D. (Photosynthetic artificial darkness). But I do plan to try the far red nighttime ritual next round. Getting 13 hours light with a 13 hour darkness pheno sounds too good not to be investigated.

The other day I posted pictures wondering why my plant was droopy. It is a month old today, so I decided to check the roots and see if it were rootbound. The pots I use have 4 rectangular windows above the very bottom of the pot, 90 degrees apart from each other. Attached are the pictures of my roots, is this rootbound? I see roots swirling, so I think so. Any advice on watering for the future? Maybe change to a different style one gallon pot?

Yep, it's root bound.

Two things: You need to let it dry out between watering much more than you are. If you were, there would be lots of fine roothairs, not the large roots. Still, that's an impressive, healthy root system.

It's got 1 or 2 more weeks before you must transplant. Let it dry out a whole bunch a couple times, trim it up for bloom and have at it!

I did a whole round of this Colombian by seed a while back on this journal. I'm not sure exactly when, but it wasn't too long before I started the Advanced LED Journal.

It's really pretty easy to deal with a seedling. Just let it grow, top it, prune it, etc. Not much different than a clone except you're going to get 4 main tops with a seed, rather than 3, 4, 5 etc. with a clone.

Hey Doc,

Can I ask a quick question about topping seedlings? When is that right time to top? It seems like I remember reading that one should top after the second set of 5-leaf fans. Did I remember that right? And I assume you would top again to get 4 main tops, so do you do that after the plant has grown 2 more nodes of 5-fan leaves?

My plants are getting about to that point, and wanted to double check before I do anything rash with a pair of fiskars!

Thanks!

My rule for topping seedlings is to wait till there are at least 5 sets of leaves. (5 to 7 bladed, not 3 bladed). You could wait till 6 or even 7 sets of leaves, 5 is the minimum.

Top so that at least 4 large branches below the cut can grow up. The lowest point you could top is the second true node. but you can top higher as long as you prune so that you get 4 main tops.

Ok, I will let them dry out more. I am still a newb at this. I am going to try starting in Solo cups and I also ordered some 2 gallon fabric pots, will try going from Solo to 2 gallon to 7 gallons. This will help with room in the veg tent as well, so it's an added bonus. Back to the lab for more experimentation!

I like the idea of fabric pots to bloom in, but I do not understand why people use them in veg. Roots pop right out of plastic pots. I use 1 gallon plastic pots in veg....I suppose I could do better but things turn out OK.
