Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Great shot of the root ball Doc. Keep throwing those out there every now and then. Maybe we'll all figure out how to copy you. :laughtwo: impressive. What magic are you using in that lab? I keep trying Doc and you're doing something I'm not, but I can't figure out what, unless it's the lights. That may be it. You have much better lights than I do.

On another note, I took your advice yesterday and gave my Carnival a secondary brazillian trim and cleared so you could see the soil from above. My question; your advice used to be against defoliation because you believed it reduced Brix levels. When did that policy change, and what caused this drastic shift? I see the results, which is why I followed your lead, but as I did so I found myself wondering.

I don't think they're false seeds, doc. Some of them were starting to develop the tiger stripes, and I cracked them open to find the lil' baby seedling thing.

anyways, here's some bud porn!

Who cares if you have seeds? Those buds look awesome!

Seriously tho, has there been a release of pollen in the room? I'm still gonna bet that those aren't real seeds. Save some and see if they germ?

meh, I don't really care it's just bothering me because my last grow seeded on me too. I never had seeds before that. Last grow wasn't hi-brix, though.

I can't agree more, doc. I love the look of the buds, they smell incredible. I'm super stoked to cut em down. I didn't take clones, so seeds don't hurt. It'd be nice if it were only the cotton candy that ends up seeded but who knows!

It had to be said again, beautiful buds. Just beautiful.

You don't wanna remove just leaves. You prune branches away, but its not an excercise in defoliation vis a vis big leaf removal.

Perhaps you have some neighbors growing outdoors?

haha it's possible!

The reason I asked is because I know a guy who was growing in his house and his crop kept getting seeded up from time to time. By a roundabout series of events, it was discovered that some random guy about 2 blocks UPWIND from his house had 20 random plants....male and female....in his yard.

The addition of a HEPA filter on his fresh air intake helped tremendously. Pollen is small stuff and floats on the breeze. Stranger things have happened!

I'm still favoring the odds that you don't have real seeds.

Ok. I get the distinction. I assumed the intent is simply to focus energies into something really worth harvesting. This is what I tried to do. Next time I'll be more ruthless. The first couple snips were a challenge and then it was like Edward Scissorhands and before I knew it there was a pile of trim laying on the floor. :laughtwo:

RE: the rootball.......plenty of us are getting this type of root ball! It's the whole wet/dry thing AND the soil. That root ball was formed mostly under the Blue LED that I didn't like. It's not the lights, it's the CULTIVATION techniques! :smokin:

I had a rootball just like it using the exact same G8 LED you have....the exact same light.

Great question on defoliation!

There's a technique some folks were using a while back (probably still are) whereby they take off all fan leaves except the top one or two in order to stimulate more bud sites. I tried the method and indeed, it produced more bud sites! But it also cut brix readings in half and produced markedly lower quality buds, so I abandoned the process.

Pruning is different. It's about removing branches, topping and shaping the plant to thrive in the indoor (read wimpy lighting) environment. Yes, leaves are being removed so we could technically call pruning a method of defoliation....but it's quite different from the fan leaf removal as we're mostly removing whole branches.

So Doc, or anyone else using multiple runs/kits I got a question.

I want to upcan my #1s into #15s and flip within a week of the end of the current round of flowers. Is this possible using the dirt that is in that room(as in the dirt that is currently in 15's flowering)? I mean can I just cut a #1 sized hole, put some Roots! in there and go? Or do I need to ammend and cook? This would be round 2 going into round 3.

Then soil will sit for like 8-10 weeks between uses.

brixklinger, i upcanned on top of large rootballs and grew some incredible weed with the kit. so answer to your question you ask is yes., but your results will be better with amended soil. :)
you can top dress with EWC, more soil, Recharge, and Roots! this is what i ended up doing..

Hey doc, I know you've said that if we are able to drench large pots we should feed a little heavier. What do you think about dunking large pots until they are saturated in straight h2o, letting them drain completely and then pouring about a quart of regular strength "food" over the top?

My kit soil has been cooking for a month now. It still looks the same as the day the lid was put on, have heard several here mention they get a white crusty coating on top. Hp bale set for a while, could micros be dead?

Worry not. It is ALIVE!
