Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

That Heri...OMG one day I'll get to grow that beautiful plant, until then, I have to drool over pics. It's good thing I kept my beard, had I shaved it off my shirt would have a puddle on it.

That wash bucket looks nasty...I had to explain the wash to a friend, he didn't quite get it. "Don't dust this table here for 3 months then lick it" is how he finally understood why we wash our buds.

But first....spray that table with some sticky stuff, so it picks up dead skin cells, dandruff, bugs and fiberglass dust.....along with the crap we spray on them!

I know a lot of new people check in all the time so I'll just mention it again: If there's any sort of "secret weapon" in growing MJ it's bud washing. Short of the growing environment, the washing is the single biggest improvement in flavor you can get from a single step.

Awesome pics doc! Where can you direct me for a tutorial on your produce wash process?

It's in a few places. Check the In the Lab with Doc Bud thread.

I'm not sure where it is in that thread, but it's there.

You need 3 buckets filled with clean RO.

Bucket 1: put 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup lemon juice.
Bucket 2: plain water
bucket 3: plain water

Pull the large leaves off, leave sugar leaves on. Completely immerse and agitate for 30 seconds to a minute in each bucket....starting with 1 and working to 3. Hang and dry. When buds are dried, you can manicure them easily if you wish. I also wash trim before making hash.

Pretty tough, eh? You'll never skip it again.

Sounds easy enough. Pretty sure I've read it before lol. It's amazing to see the water after you wash. Really makes me look twice at my dealers weed.

Also, I've read tons of curing/harvesting methods. Whats your preferred method? Again I apologize I've prolly read yours somewhere.

Legends dont lie either. I tested it last harvest and it is amazingly simple and the product has a better color and smell. I only did a half oz and it was premium smoke. Reps to the master

Yep. Not only does the bud wash get the gunk off, it also hydrates the buds so they dry more evenly. If you use Real Lemon...a cheap ass lemon juice with sulfites in it....you will kill any PM and mold that might be on the buds. However, please be advised that some people are allergic to sulfites and your product could literally poison them.....if you do this, do it only for yourself, after you ascertain whether you're allergic to sulfites or not.

I've done this and only vaped the finished product. No problems whatsoever for me and I do have a slight wine allergy.

As for drying and curing, I'm no expert on this. I'm always open to other methods. Someday, soon I hope, I'll really put some effort into learning about how various herbs are dried and some of the chemistry, etc. But for right now I do this:

8x10 climate controlled room with 4 wires that run the long way and a hanging basket off to the side. There is an oscillating fan that lightly stirs the air in the room.

temp is a constant 72, humidity starts off at 60 for a couple days, then drops down to 50-55. Most things are dry in seven days. Then I put them in jars, open then daily and occasionally put the jars in a warm dry place for a few hours if needed.

It does pretty well. I'm interested in the very subtle smells and aromas....I get off on smelling the stuff. Anyone who has smelled this product is usually pretty perplexed; "I didn't know weed could smell like that....." It tastes damn good too....I'm very happy with it.

I'm sure I could do better. How about a climate controlled Nitrogen filled bag? Put the weed a basket surrounded by a large bubble bag, inflate with nitrogen, put it in a climate controlled room. What would that do?

What about curing under UV light, IE outdoors? What would that do?

You see where I"m going. We haven't scratched the surface.....I know literally nothing about drying and curing weed!

Doc,

Thanks for the quick response on the next 2 kits for my indoor run! Had 3 prior for my current outdoor grow high brix vrs FFOF - Earth Juice regimen. Man I am gonna have a lot of soil lol! 2nd run soil at least for the HB!

I was just going back and re reading some things in both the Lab and the Q&A threads. There was a mention of temperatures, black garbage cans and killing the critters in the soil. What temperatures and duration would kill the critters? Is there any way to test or know that you have an acceptable soil and if it is still alive?

The reason I ask is that in the comparisons I am running outdoor I have not been able to visually see a major difference in growth, leaf shine and overall plant happiness that is usually exhibited in high brix plants. Going over my notes there were many hot days in June during the cook(Nor Cal) which were in the shade of course, but there were some stretches of 90+ temps, so I am wondering if in fact I did kill the critters. Don't get me wrong.....they don't look bad at all but they don't stand out either so it got me thinking if they are just in good soil.

Another question if I could.........With multi strains and the outdoor environment it varies and not so easy to know exactly what day or week it is in the cycle. Some have pistols and some not so I am contemplating when the right time for re charge would be as they are all in their finishing containers and soon to be flowering. Busy schedule at work but I will get some pics to put up soon.

Thanks in advance,

Any2

Great thread - very informative. Can't express enough how thankful I am to have access to this kind of information, especially as a first time grower. :Namaste:

I can't wait to run out of what I am using to have an excuse to order your brix kit. Your pictures are phenomenal. Keep up the great work!

If you buy my kit and have a good environment....your plants will look pretty much the same. It's not hard to do.

Wait till there are pistils at all the bud sites to do the Cat drench. RE-charge can be done anytime now.

What exactly is the soil mix you're competing against?

If you were in a black garbage can and temps were 90+ you probably damaged the herd. They like soil about 68 degrees.....as the microherd rebuilds, you should be OK.

That is what I was afraid of. I had (4) 32 gallon cans and I could not bring them inside so they were under shade with a fan. Also anything black and in the direct sun get extremely hot and we had a heat wave of 106-108 ish temps for 7 or so days in the beginning of July after transplant to their final containers. I put them in the shade during this time as well and even though the cook was finished the herd took on a lot of heat unfortunately. Hopefully there is a herd left to rebuild but I am not feeling good about it. I will recharge nonetheless and see how it goes.

The soil mix is FFOF mainly with a top layer of Happy Frog along with the Earth Juice regimen and 25 gal approx of soil per can. Nothing fancy just mix and feed without airation. Grow, catalyst, micro blast and bloom coming soon and some cal mag here and there. Strains are Sour Diesal, Blue Dream and Berry White.

Thanks again Doc,

Any2

The only problems reported with the kit are "cooking" related. Too cold or too hot. I think you'll be OK.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Finally checked out the "new" high brix kit instructions. Do I need the Bug and Pest and Cationic Drench in addition to what I got before? I also need some more transplant as I'm all out, and I see you are calling for a final dose of that. Plants are doing great. Glad to see the descriptions of healthy plants looking fake, as mine look like something in a hobby store. Yes, this is a very easy method. I put the drench/spray schedule on the calendar, and just try to keep the temperature within range. Thanks for the research, and also thanks to all who post in the forum and ask questions I didn't even know enough to ask.

You'll do just fine sticking with the original instructions Maggie. That's what the lab recommends and I've grown some of my best plants doing exactly what you're doing.

All this other stuff is experimental at this stage. I don't need Bug and Pest.....you won't either. Not to worry!

The kit is awesome and love everything about it! I just had a sinking suspicion that the critters took on too much heat as I have stuck to the gameplan very rigidly. I just do not see signs of high brix values and that fake plant look. " Honey I need to bring these 4 garbage cans in the house for awhile". Wife responds, "Are you out of your mind!" lol! In all seriousness she would have let me if I lobbied hard enough. Oh well live and learn. The evironment of the next cook will be perfect and the lesson here is if you can avoid the temp extremes do so. Crossing fingers for now.

Peace,

Any2

It should catch up....outdoor season is long. Most of what you get in the kit is rocks. There's not much for a plant to eat in that bag of crumbly rocks and the drenches don't contain complete nutrition at all. With the drenches In combination with the sprays you can keep a plant alive....but it won't be healthy. The roots need to be working with the soil. It'll catch fire soon. Do the recharge!

Thanks, Doc. Everything going so well I was nervous. Transplanted one twice when I culled the hermaphrodite. Thought I'd killed it but it bounced back. Going to be a much better crop than last year.

re: Doc Bud - High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Doc, just came here on a referral from another site to try to track down a high brix kit and can't send PM's till 50 posts. Can we figure out a way to communicate? Thanks!
