Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

Doc, I followed you for a year...then took the plunge....it was perfection....and I have pics.....I washed the buds too.....a new grow shop opened around me....20 year grower....told him about your bud washing...then I came in this week and he said...I'll never not wash my buds...the water was so dirty....I've been smoking shit all these years...he slapped me on the back, shook my hand and thanked me..

It made my day...

Bud washing is probably my best idea ever. It makes such a huge difference. Well, is your stuff any good? :circle-of-love:

hey Doc this is kind of a noobish question but im just getting into soil recipes and i'd like your input on this if you don't mind.

i have immediate access to:

peat moss
vermiculite
perlite
coco

im growing with nutrients right now so im looking for a good soil recipe combining just what i mentioned to have control of the procedure through liquid nutrients, at what ratio should i mix it up to get a good base ?

i was thinking:

50% peat moss
20% vermiculite
20% perlite
10% coco

how would you go with it?

I'm not well versed in salt nutrients, but I would not use coco. It has some weird CEC and creates issues with calcium and I simply don't understand it.

30% perlite. 10% Vermiculite/redwood bark/pumice....something like that.

Is the peat pH stabilized?

don't know Doc....have to go thru that cure and dry period....I have followed you to the max.....now for the cure....

yeah it is, 6.2 pH

thanks for the recipe Doc, i wont be using coco then

6.2 is a tad low....I'd like to see it 6.4 or 6.5. Have you considered adding some rock powders to the mix? I think you'd be very well served with perhaps 1 tbspn limestone (CaCo3......NOT DOLOMITE) per gallon of soil. That would bring your pH up a bit.

FWIW, low pH soils tend to invite insects, while high pH soils tend towards mold and mildew. The pH of the nutrients has little bearing on the pH of the soil....so I recommend raising it up just a bit.

yeah i know what you mean about the insects, got some gnats lately and i was wondering why since i try to keep everything super clean, now it makes sense.

My soil pH right now is 6.3, with a base of 35% peat moss / 20% sphagnum peat / 30% perlite / 10% organic worm humus and a 5% premix of natural minerals inside 10 gal pots, i'm using a 3 part base system of salt nutrients and probably gonna start blasting some overdrive soon.

it was my bad for not adding vermiculite in the first place, a mistake i wont repeat again, i can really see it affecting my soil.

i think i can get some limestone but not sure what you mean by rock powders, these stuff are really hard to get where i live already, getting lost in the translate makes it even harder, lol.

This will be my greatest challenge - letting the majority of the harvest get properly cured. Now that I've got the daughter to finally use cannabis instead of Xanax for anxiety it puts more pressure on the supply end. I have to keep reminding myself that eventually I will have more than they could ingest.

You know how we love to see pictures Shawnee.

420brother, Doc is referring to to the pulverized rocks that the mycos breakdown for their main diet...minerals.
Aka..Glacial rock dust/powder, volcanic rock dust/powder, etc..
Its where the magic starts..
Theyre part of Doc Kit: Roots!, Amendment, Recharge..

LImestone is the best thing for you, I think. Field marking chalk will work as long as it's CaCo3 at least 90%. Beware Dolomite and Hydrated lime!

I just got back from the hour each way to get a couple bails of promix and ewc's and when I got home I realized they gave me promix HP-CC, which is peat/chunk coir based. I bet i know the answer but is this acceptable? I called them when I realized and they won't do any returns on it and they don't carry just HP. I only went there because my normal place only carries BX now and I have a small car so I couldn't fit 2 bails plus extra perlite and a 120 lb dog. So Doc any chance this will work OK or did I just buy $85 worth of door stops?

It won't work right with the coco.....sorry bro.

BX will work just fine.

Doc-

Re-running HB soil is common/preferred for indoor grows, but you posted you would not recommend re-using HB soil from an outdoor grow. Can you explain?

In a related question, I have two 25 gal. soft pots I was planning on using. Do you think it is preferable to do an outdoor grow in these pots, or dig two holes and fill them with my HB kit soil? If using the pots, would that allow me to re-use the soil?

Thanks!

In larger, outdoor raised beds and such, we just re-test and re-amend the soil every spring, a month or more before planting.

If you're in 25 gallons (small pots for outdoors IMO) you can certainly reuse the soil. It just makes no sense to do it a yard at a time....just leave it in the bed and re-test.

Doc

a non brix question if you don't mind.

I started a seed of my own WW. It is in some roots green lite soil with a a light tablespoon of OC+. It was doing fine for a while, then this. Any ideas what might be causing this?
