Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

They're good questions, so I take the time to answer them. Keep in mind that the pots aren't dry for more than a few hours or less. Nothing wilts if done properly, although I do recommend beginners to go all the way to slight wilt just to get the hang of the timing so they avoid it in the future.

Even so, moisture from the plant is feeding the soil when it's dry. They're happily busy cracking tiny rocks down there, wet or dry.

Now, if you really want to stress out the biota, just give them a ton of organic material, or worse yet, sugar!

Thank you for answering that so thoroughly Doc. I feel much better about it now. I think the wet/dry cycle is something I could find acceptable under those circumstances. It's a matter of getting the timing right.

No answer yet on worms. There are many HB growers reading this right now. Who has found evidence of a healthy worm population in their pots? I may be reaching here. I realize most of you recycle your soil and I look at indoor gardening from a no-till perspective. DrZiggy, yours are close to a no-till, with the tiers, and your approach is the one I plan to mirror. Any worms in your pots?

And Doc, all that organic matter in my pots didn't seem to hold back my plants one bit. My biota just isn't as electrified as yours. :laughtwo:

When adding leaves into multiple run soils, how much is too much? I agree on the sugar part, get them processing what we want them to, active life should be abundant already, no need to feed them with sugars. Am I correct on my thinking?

Yup. That's the basic idea.

When I add leaves to the soil I'd say maybe 10% of the leaves from the crop make it back into the soil they were grown in. It seems about right.

Mornin Doc and "gang" just a little good news and a mini progress report on my Mazar's you'le all find very interesting. On the 19th they got their second C.D., then on the 23rd,they got Brix, then on the 24th they got their first dose of Epsoms(1teaspn/gal.) with 1/4 Trans.and a bit of Tea.that's all. Last night i peeked in on them and noticed they're taking on a diff. look....had to really check them out and let me say i was pleasently surprized by the very noticable resin increase! Wow ....Doc these Mazar's are producing it like crazy now....i'm gonna try and get some pics up tonight or tomorrow to prove this. Go Kit go....Go Kit Go....Go Kit Go!!:yahoo:

Hey doc soil question......his f***ing promix I got must have gnats that come with it. I opened my soil tub today.......3 weeks of cooking. And I had about 8-10 little transparent pests crawling on the inside of my lid. I killed them. Anyway what if anything can I do to my cooking soil to get rid of them?

I remember curso said to use yucca.....but is that for only soil that is being used?

Note: the soil is eating my leaves....they are gone. And I still have a little condensation on lid.

Very disturbing to hear you might have gnats in Promix....it's a new development and you're not the first person I've heard it from.

However, crawling pests are not flying pests and gnats fly...so you might have something else?

Get a big tub of water and put a mosquito dunk in it. let the dunk sit in there, stir it once in a while and when your soil is all cooked use the water in the bin with the dunks for your first few waterings. That should do the trick.

I've got several species of crawlies in my soil: mites, thripes and something else. None of them cause any damage. You'll probably be just fine but the dunks will solve it.

They may well be some beneficial critters that assist in decomp. There are many small earthlings that help the soil community. That's ok though. I understand the reluctance to allow them indoor access.

Short stocky plants for sure I'll post a side by side in my Pestelence journal today. The house and garden one is double the size but not got nearly the tight structure of the high brix.

In one gallon I've experienced 1/2 the growth as usual. On all but 1 strain

And one of my 8 bales so far has had gnat larvae for sure. But the tupar and basement by royal gold are still the worst gnat carrying garbage I've ever used as a medium.

Hey doc mosquito bits in your soil does that mess with the brix levels?

I don't see how this could have any effect on Brix. The bacteria only go after the larvae of flies or gnats in a very non-toxic way.

Your right doc....maybe hey aren't gnats.....I just assumed cause I'm using the same pro mix on this current grow and have had gnats.....
Here is a pic of one of them...not a very good pic....hey are transparent with little antennae and they are just crawling...no flying....it is at the top of the pic....

I will do some more research since I can't get a good picture.... I know what they look like just can't get a good pic of it...

But if you say you have some crawlers too then I won't worry to much bout it till they start flying....lol.

Thanks doc sue and dutty

That will change in bloom and you'll get a good yield too. Hopefully, this will result in better produce at less cost for you. Keeping positive vibes going your way....don't let the soil energy go flat and look out for week 5 in bloom! You might consider a heavy Growth Energy feeding after the Cat Drench.

I've never put it in the soil before. I've thought about it and then decided against it since they work in the water tank real well. I haven't added a dunk in that tank in over 2 years, but when I first put it in, my gnat problem during organic and early mineralized soils were greatly helped.

I am praying that Promix doesn't develop a gnat problem like so many other soils have.

If it's long and wiggly, and moves pretty fast, and the body is raw shrimp colored you could have thrips....google some pics.

Or, you could have Symphylids. Symphylids are easy to spot. It is small, normally less than half inch with two long antennae, and twelve pairs of legs. Together with that, it is either white or cream in colour. Those bastards eat roots, but they won't get too far in the good soil.

We need some advice, Doc. :cheesygrinsmiley:

A few of us are growing Ace Panama this round and DrZiggy asked me when I thought the best timing for Cat drench would be. This strain grows very small calyxes in abundance in the early bloom phase and then bulks them up into knobby tops.

Would Cat drench or GE produce more calyxes in early bloom? Would you do the drench early or late on a pheno like that? My first instinct was a later drench to sync with the swell, but maybe it would be better early, to increase the number of calyxes ...
