Doc Bud's High Brix Q&A With Pictures

dugg can you clear up this probably simple repair for me. My mars lamp sparked like crazy from the power-in socket. i told sara about it and she sent me replacement parts. when i opened the case to make the repair i see that the wires that attach to the power-in plug were burnt off. Im not sure which goes on which post. There ia a red a black and a white.Am i correct in assuming that the white goes to the ground center pole? Should the red go to the right post, does it matter?

Lastly when i reconnect the power is there any precautions i should take to avoid repeat fireworks?
Hey VonD...i have a couple Q's. first . Has it been determined what caused the sparks in the first place? These parts you received.....are they a direct replacement for what's buggered? Is your light 120v. or 240v? Normally with the wires and colours you described red ,black and white belong to a 240v. circuit....red ,one hot lead, black ,another hot lead and then the white or neutral. There would also ,or should be a green (ground ) conductor(wire). If your light is 120 v. and plugs into a normal 110v. rec. take a look at the inside of the light and see if that white wire is attached to the case or another ground terminal somewhere inside the light. If it does that's your ground. It will for sure have one.....otherwise if there was ever a fault inside the light for some reason and it wasn't grounded to the case ....if you touched it you would ,or could be zapped real good and if your feet are damp or your standing on a damp or a wet floor ,your history!I'm almost positive it doesn't matter what terminal the red and black go to once you have the white one correctly connected. Wish i knew more about Mars lights and how they do their internal wiring.Hope i've helped somewhat VonD. I also find it a little odd that a manufacturer would trust you to make these repairs yourself. Sounds to me that one of those (red or black)wires came loose and touched or shorted out against something metal inside the case . Take a good look inside to make sure the rest of the internals are undamaged.Let me know will ya. Be absolutely sure before you power it back up OK! Manufacturers will sometimes use white as a ground conductor but not usually....green is the universal colour used for ground conductors. That's why i said to have a good look inside to see where that white one goes.Later bud! Cheers.

Thats the same thing that happened to my light. Keep an eye on it after you repair it. Mine ran really, really hot afterwards.

In the near future: DJ Short's F13.

Say Doc ...

I was looking into Thais on PotChimp's thread - he's going to run an Ace Thai Stick - and I wondered if your Cadillac has any relation to DJ Short's Purple Thai ... ?

thanks man

ill reply in a pm rather than jam up docs thread w burnt looking stuff.

Curso ty for chiming in. did you simply replace the power in socket and the cord? Did you continue to use it after it began to run hot?
Hey there Curso(the chef)Do ya have any idea why your light ran hot after you repaired it? Were all the fans running or not? That's something i always check....make sure those cooling fans are working properly....they're there for a reason and if one is shot it's not always easy to see that. They are only puny little fans but they do their job OK! If they fail....and they do....the light will overheat and fail prematurely.Just a thought eh!

Everything ran fine, it just all of a sudden got hot as hell, then it started smoking. Fans were on and runnning. I am going with inexpensive wiring, that over time can no longer insulate the heat.

I can't wait till I'm a few grows down the road and I get to use super enriched soil. Your plants, they are so healthy and beautiful. Still inspiring!

How often are you giving drenches? And about what run would you say this soil is on?

I'd say the environment is 80% of my success. Dial that in for the easiest boost in performance.

I drench every other time I water, mostly. I might water twice sometimes, depending.

I've been doing a couple other things differently lately but I'm not quite ready to share or recommend them just yet. Mainly, I'm feeding quite heavy at certain times, like about 10 days after the Cat Drench.

The soil is currently a mix of runs 2-4. I harvest, dump the rootball in the barrel, break it up with a shovel, layer trimmings, add Roots!, more dirt, another layer of trimmings and Roots!, etc.

Once I can make a dirt clod I toss the soil out. As long as the dirt doesn't stick together and wipes off a dry hand pretty easily it's good to go.

How many runs would you estimate it would be good for?

This post is gold. I think I need to be drenching way more often if you say you are drenching every other watering. Sometimes I've gone 7 days between drenches with these white widows I'm growing. Like Drench, water, water, water, drench. Mine are in #10 smart pots, so I give each of them like 7ml of growth and 1ml of tea, in about 1 and a half gallons of water.

I don't know about that.....I'm pretty sure PC is blackberry x purple Urkle.

I thought you had a Thai with purple in it ... ?
